Sophie did not tear up. She thought she would. When she first read the email from Blackwood & Pierce Law Firm, her chest tightened so much that she thought tears would come. But they didn’t. Instead, she felt cold. The cold made her feel like something crazy and more than her capacity was about to happen. Lily was still asleep at this time. The sun from outside the kitchen window began to reflect inside. She had barely slept since last night. Her mind keeps replaying the same sentence over and over: “Full parental rights.” Ethan did not bluff. He didn’t threaten her either, just that he was prepared to follow the case thoroughly with his whole. This has always been his behavior ever since she knew him. All his actions are strategic and always calculated. But this wasn’t business, this was about Lily, her only daughter. And that changed everything. Sophie walked into her daughter’s room gently, not wanting to disturb her sleep. She sat on a chair facing Lily, watching her sleep peacefully. Ten years of living in her presence, late night fevers, laughing together, crying together, helping her with school projects. Every milestone has been Sophie alone. A knock came on the door. It cannot be orders being delivered, or neighbors, because it was still early, she thought. Even Ethan wouldn’t show up unannounced after sending legal paperwork, she thought. Another knock, but it was firmer this time. Lily said. “Mama?” “It’s okay,” Sophie said quickly. “Stay here.” She walked to the door and cautiously looked through the peephole. At first, she felt relieved.. It wasn’t Ethan, but it was a courier. She opened the door slowly. “Miss Bennett?” the man asked. “Yes.” He handed her the envelope with him and asked her to sign. The logo stamped in the corner of the paper made her scared when she saw “Blackwood Enterprises.” She closed the door and opened the envelope, eager to see what was inside, she saw a single document. Suprisingly, it was an invitation to a private meeting. Today by 2:00 PM. Blackwood Tower, no threats, no legal wordings this time, just a location. He wanted to talk before escalating further. Her jaw tightened. This was how he operated. Apply pressure. Then offer “discussion.” Lily walked towards Sophie from upstairs. “Mama, who was it?” “Just mail,” Sophie said, forcing calm into her voice. Lily looked at her with a careful gaze, she had always understood situations. “Mummy, you look worried, are you fine?” Lily said. Sophie bent slowly to Lily’s level and dressed Lily’s hair back with her hands. “I’m not. Just thinking,” she said. “About the important man?” Lily asked. Sophie hesitated. “Yes.” Lily considered that. “He looks a little like me.” The words landed gently — but heavily. Sophie’s heart raced. “Why do you say that, baby?” “Our eyes, mama,” Lily said simply. “They look alike.” Sophie swallowed hard. Children saw things adults tried to avoid. “Sometimes people just have similar features, and that doesn't mean anything. It’s just nature” she said softly. Lily didn’t argue, but she wasn’t convinced either. “Is he coming back?” Lily asked. Sophie didn’t know what to answer with. “Yes,” she finally said. “He is.” Blackwood Tower felt exactly as Sophie remembered it. The clear glass, the polished marbles, the whole building, was just so unique. As she walked through the doors that afternoon, every memory she tried to forget for a decade kept resurfacing. All the time she waits for Ethan to finish his meetings, the arguments about control and dominance. The receptionist directed her to Ethan’s office. The elevator took longer than expected. Different thoughts ran through her mind. She thought of what she would encounter in Ethan’s office. She never knew if it would be good or bad. The elevator door opened after a while, and she followed the directions the receptionist had given her. She entered his office and found him standing behind the long window, looking downstairs. He turned back when he heard the door. His look didn’t change from yesterday.. He looked controlling and stood with so much confidence. “You came,” he said. “You left me little choice.” He smiled at the statement, like he melted his heart. “Let’s not start the meeting like this, let’s have a sit” he replied, directing his hands towards the chair. Sophie agreed, they both sat. “What do you want, why are you threatening custody?” Sophie inquired. “It’s not a threat Sophie, it’s protection,” he said, calmly. Sophie exhaled, “You cannot come to claim protection after ten years.” “You’re the one who left.” Ethan said with a sharpened eyes. “I had to, Ethan,” Sophie snapped back. “Do you think I would have taken her from you ?” he asked quietly. “I don’t know how you’d have reacted,” Sophie admitted. He adjusted, facing Sophie directly, but not aggressively. “I would have known, and would have done the right thing. But you kept it away from me.” Ethan said. Her chest tightened with unease. “You were building an empire,” she said. “There was no room for anything unpredictable.” “And a child is unpredictable?” he asked. “Yes,” she said fiercely. “And I didn’t want her growing up in boardrooms and press conferences.” Ethan studied her face carefully. “Is she mine?” he asked. Sophie looked away, without responding. He exhaled, as if the truth hurt him more than it should. “She is?” Ethan whispered. “I wasn’t trying to hurt you,” she said, with her voice almost shaking. “You decided for both of us,” he replied. “I was scared,” she admitted. The honesty surprised even her. Ethan absorbed that quietly. “Of me?” he asked. “Yes.” Sophie whispered, almost crying Ethan stood up, and walked to the window, facing outside “I would never hurt my child,” he said finally “I know right,” Sophie said. “Then why did you keep this from me?” He shot back. “Because I don’t know what I’d expect , if I came back telling you I was pregnant,” she said. Silence and tension filled the room. “What do you want?” she asked. He turned back to her direction. “I want a test,” he said. “This would make it official, so no one would question, not even the Board.” “And after that?” Sophie asked. “I want to meet her properly.” He said quietly. “And custody?” she asked carefully. “I don’t want to take her away from you,” he said. “But I also don’t want to be a stranger or visitor in my own daughter’s life.” His certain voice made Sophie a bit scared. As she was about to respond, his office phone rang and interrupted the conversation. He ignored it at first but it rang again. He went to his desk and picked the call. “Yes,” he responded. He paused for a moment, as if the caller on the other end said something serious. His jaw tightened. “Who authorized that? That was not to be released.” Ethan snapped. Ethan ended the call slowly and looked at her. “There’s a problem,” he said. “What kind of problem?” His eyes met hers directly. “The press just received anonymous confirmation that I have a ten-year-old daughter.” Her “How?” she asked curiously. “I didn’t authorize any release,” he said. “Which means someone else did.” Her mind raced. All the thoughts of the secret being revealed ran through her mind. “Does Camille know?” she asked before she could stop herself. His silence was telling. The storm had begun, and this time, it wasn’t private, but public. Sophie’s screen was filled with notifications, she could see the headlines too. She looked at Ethan, and panic set in. “What do we do?” she asked. Ethan didn’t answer immediately, because this wasn’t about custody anymore, it is now scandal, and Lily was at the center of it. This made Sophie’s heart race. “We move fast.” Ethan said with a low voice. Outside, camera flashes were already starting to gather at the base of Blackwood Tower. And Sophie realized something terrifying. This was no longer just a fight between two people. It was a war. And her daughter had just been dragged into it!
