Chapter 18: The Art of Ruthless Games

632 Words
The sun rose blood-red over the skyline of Paris, as if the city itself anticipated the c*****e to come. Vivienne Moreau stood in her penthouse, hair pinned into a sleek chignon, clad in an obsidian suit that seemed cut from shadow itself. Her fingers closed around a leather dossier. Inside: every known secret of Bernard Langlois. "You’re sure this will hold?" she asked. Natalie, standing at her side, gave a curt nod. "Langlois’s off-book dealings, bribery trails, offshore accounts... it’s enough to end him. And Marcus by extension." Vivienne exhaled slowly. "Then today we draw blood." A low chime announced Liam’s arrival. He entered, lean and lethal in his tailored charcoal suit. Their gazes locked.... a silent vow exchanged. "Let’s finish this," he said. Across the city, Bernard Langlois stirred in his mansion’s study. A man of polished ruthlessness, he read the anonymous email with narrowing eyes. Screenshots. Account ledgers. A promise of public exposure. His phone buzzed.... Marcus. "Bernard," Marcus greeted smoothly. "We have a problem." Langlois’s voice cut like glass. "No. You have a problem. You dragged me into this. Now the wolves are at the door." "Stay calm. Vivienne is bluffing. I will handle it." Langlois’s silence spoke volumes. After the call ended, Langlois poured a drink. His icy stare burned through the glass. "If Moreau thinks she can destroy me," he murmured, "she’ll regret it." Emma stalked the city like a predator without a pack. Cut from the company, reduced to Marcus’s pawn, her fury simmered beneath her poised facade. Her heels clicked across the marble floors of Marcus’s penthouse. "Vivienne is slipping through your fingers," she snapped. Marcus reclined, unruffled. "She’s bleeding. That matters." Emma paced. "It’s not enough. I want Liam broken. I want her shattered." Marcus’s gaze cooled. "Then prove your worth. Or stay out of my way." Emma’s nails bit into her palm. Without another word, she left... phone already in hand. "Time for my own game," she whispered. Vivienne strode into Moreau Industries, the city’s vultures already circling. Reporters clamored outside. Headlines screamed scandal. But within the boardroom, a deadlier theater played out. Bernard Langlois himself had arrived.... flanked by legal counsel, smile thin as razors. Vivienne faced him across the gleaming table. "Monsieur Langlois," she began, voice cool. "Your shadow dealings have come to light. Withdraw your support from Marcus. Or I expose everything." Langlois leaned forward. "You’re bold, Madame Moreau. But blackmail is a dangerous game." Natalie slid the dossier across. "Evidence speaks louder than threats. The media already circles. Your reputation won’t survive this." Langlois’s mask cracked. For a moment, raw calculation flickered in his eyes. "And if I comply?" "You’ll fade quietly. Marcus will fall alone." Silence. Finally, Langlois inclined his head. "Then consider my support... rescinded." The war shifted in a heartbeat. Marcus hurled a crystal tumbler against the wall as the news reached him. "Langlois folded," Emma said flatly. Marcus’s jaw clenched. "He was weak. No matter. I still hold the footage." Emma’s eyes glittered. "And I still have my card to play." "What card?" She smiled darkly. "You’ll see." That evening, in the lake house sanctuary, Vivienne lay entwined with Liam. "One enemy down," she whispered against his throat. "And Marcus?" he murmured. "Next." Her mouth captured his, a slow claiming. Their clothes vanished between heated kisses and frantic touches. "No more masks," she gasped. "No more fear." He drove into her, fierce and reverent, their bodies forging defiance in every thrust. "You’re mine," he groaned. "And I am yours." "Always," she moaned. Their cries mingled, echoing through the darkened room. Across the city, Emma watched from a distance.... a figure in the rain. She lifted her phone, thumb hovering over a message to Marcus. I know where they are. And I’m about to end them.
