Shadows of the Past

1055 Words
The following morning, the sprawling Edmond Estate basked in the gentle light of dawn. Dew glistened on the manicured lawns, and the air carried the fresh scent of blooming flowers from the gardens below. In the distance, the faint hum of staff preparing breakfast could be heard—a reminder of the relentless rhythm of the estate. Catarina stood on the balcony of their honeymoon suite, wrapped in a silk robe, gazing out at the picturesque view. The soft morning breeze played with her hair, but her mind was elsewhere. The weight of her mother’s cryptic warning from the night before lingered, casting a shadow over the beauty surrounding her. Behind her, Mathias stirred, waking from a peaceful sleep. His footsteps were light as he crossed the room, and soon, his strong arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her close. “Good morning, Mrs. Edmond,” he whispered, his lips brushing against the curve of her neck. A soft smile played on Catarina’s lips as she leaned back into him, allowing herself a brief moment of peace. “Good morning, Mr. Edmond,” she replied, her voice warm but tinged with a quiet unease. For a while, they stood there, wrapped in each other’s embrace, the world outside forgotten. Mathias’s presence was a comforting anchor, and Catarina clung to it, hoping to silence the doubts that gnawed at her. But the moment was fleeting. A sharp knock on the door shattered the tranquility, pulling them back to reality. Mathias frowned slightly, reluctant to let go of his bride. “I’ll get it,” he murmured, stepping away and crossing the room. When he opened the door, Alice Edmond stood there, impeccably dressed as always, her posture regal and her expression composed. Her eyes flickered briefly to Mathias before settling on Catarina. “Good morning,” Alice said smoothly, her tone polite but firm. “May I come in?” Mathias glanced back at Catarina, who nodded. “Of course, Mother,” he said, stepping aside to let her in. Alice entered the room with the grace of someone accustomed to command. Her eyes, sharp and calculating, took in every detail of the suite before finally settling on Catarina. “I wanted to give you something,” Alice said, reaching into her handbag and pulling out a small velvet box. She held it out to Catarina, who accepted it with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension. Inside the box lay a delicate gold pendant, its surface etched with intricate symbols that seemed to shimmer faintly in the light. The design was unfamiliar and ancient, and it carried an air of mystery. “It’s a family heirloom,” Alice explained, her eyes never leaving Catarina. “It has been passed down through generations of Edmond women. It’s meant to protect the women of our family.” Catarina hesitated, her fingers brushing against the cool metal of the pendant. There was something about it—something that made her skin prickle with an unexplainable unease. But she forced a smile, not wanting to appear ungrateful. “Thank you, Alice. It’s beautiful.” Alice’s smile was thin and precise. “Wear it always,” she said softly. “It will keep you safe.” With a sense of inevitability, Catarina fastened the pendant around her neck. As it settled against her skin, a chill ran through her—a coldness that seemed almost... alive. She suppressed a shiver and tried to dismiss the sensation. But Alice noticed. Her gaze lingered on the pendant for a moment longer before she nodded. “Take care of it,” she said, her tone carrying an unspoken warning. Later that day, Catarina wandered through the gardens, seeking solace in the serene beauty of the estate. The vibrant colors of the flowers and the gentle rustling of leaves offered a brief respite from the tension that had settled over her. But she was not alone for long. In a secluded corner of the garden, Rachel Holmes waited, her expression tense and her eyes filled with worry. When Catarina approached, Rachel’s gaze immediately dropped to the pendant around her daughter’s neck. “What is that?” Rachel demanded, her voice low and urgent. Catarina blinked, taken aback by the intensity of her mother’s question. “It’s a gift from Alice,” she explained. “A family heirloom. She said it’s meant to protect me.” Rachel’s eyes narrowed, and a flicker of fear crossed her face. “You need to be careful,” she said, her grip tightening on Catarina’s hand. “There’s more to that pendant than you realize. It’s not just a trinket.” Before Catarina could respond, a figure emerged from the shadows. Alice Edmond, her posture as composed as ever, approached them with a calm, deliberate stride. “Rachel,” Alice greeted, her tone cool and measured. “I see you’ve found time to enjoy the gardens.” Rachel’s expression hardened. “What are you playing at, Alice? Why give Catarina the pendant?” Alice’s smile was cold and calculating. “I’m ensuring the pact remains intact,” she said smoothly. “You should do the same.” “I won’t let my daughter suffer because of an ancient curse,” Rachel shot back, her voice filled with defiance. “I’ll do whatever it takes to protect her.” Alice’s eyes darkened, and for a moment, a dangerous tension crackled in the air between them. “Then prepare to face the consequences,” Alice said softly, her words carrying the weight of a threat. Catarina looked between the two women, confusion and fear swirling in her chest. “What are you talking about? What pact? What curse?” Neither woman answered. Instead, Alice offered one last, knowing smile before turning and walking away, leaving Rachel and Catarina alone in the garden. As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the estate, Catarina couldn’t shake the feeling that she was standing on the edge of something vast and unknown—a web of secrets and lies that threatened to unravel everything she thought she knew. And in the depths of the garden, hidden from sight, the shadow that had lingered since the wedding stirred once more, drawn closer by the escalating tension. The past was not done with them yet.
