Not a foot close

“Next morning, Dre had called all her friends to her house. They were playing in the garden that was attached to Liam’s house too. Arora gave the children some snacks and juice and got busy with her work. Nowhere did she have an idea that her little daughter was still stuck on the previous day’s scene. All the kids were forming a group and discussing the given problem, and the leader was Dre. “So, he made me cry yesterday, and I will make him cry today,” she told her friends. Jay, who was on the list to impress Dre, stood up and took the matter into his hands. “Nobody has to do a thing. I will see that loser myself,” he said and smirked like a big guy. Dre smiled at him, cheering him on, and they all started their way towards Liam. They didn’t have to go far because he was standing in their garden, looking at the kids. He always did that, thinking that maybe one day they might invite him to play with them—and that’s what his mother told him too. Seeing all the kids coming his way, he thought he was invited to the game, but he was wrong. As soon as they reached him, Jay pushed him down, and he fell on the ground—and so did his toy car. “You made my Dre cry yesterday, you loser!” Jay yelled at him. Little Liam was not able to sit back up; his ankle got hurt from the jerky fall. He did not understand the accusation either. His little mind could not sense Dre’s reason to hate him. “You pathetic,” Jay said and pushed some sand onto his face. Liam coughed from the sudden attack. Jay, being the leader and having all the fun, all the kids started to copy him too. Liam held his eyes to avoid the dust when Jay’s eyes fell on his toy car. He liked the car, but his envy liked it more. “So, you are playing with your pathetic car, huh?” Jay said while walking over to the car. As soon as Liam registered the words, he shifted his direction. He looked at Jay, who was a step away from crushing his car. He shook his head desperately. “No, no, please, sorry, please. I will never hurt her. Never. Please leave my car alone.” He slipped and crawled to the place, trying to hold his car, but Jay stepped on his outstretched hand, and Liam hissed in pain. In the next second, his car was crushed by Jay. He stomped on the toy car with his foot over and over. Tears pricked Liam’s eyes, which made Dre calm. All the kids started laughing at Liam’s state. But Jay was not stopping his assault and was jumping on his broken car. The kids’ laughter did not end, and neither did the despair of little Liam. He was trembling now and shouted, “Noooooo!” The sound was so loud that all the kids stopped abruptly, and two of the mothers, along with their husbands, who were at home at that time, came into the backyard. Maxie was the first to take Liam in her arms and shield him from everybody. Liam’s little body was shaking. Maxie looked at her husband, Jacob, who nodded in return. Arora asked her daughter, “What happened?” but Dre kept her mouth shut to prevent herself from being scolded. Anthony’s eyes fell on Liam’s hand, and he understood that he had been bullied by the kids. “Who did this to you, Liam?” he asked the boy. Liam was shaking, and Maxie had clutched him in her arms. He did not speak. “Let it go, Mr. Paige. These kids are just playing. I will take Liam to bed and apply ointment,” Maxie urged, but Anthony cut her off. “No, Maxie. They must understand that there is always a limit!” Listening to Anthony roar, all the kids fled, leaving Dre alone. Dre looked at her parents, who were eyeing her. She looked down. Though she was not feeling sorry, she was scared for sure. She did not expect that Liam would react like that and shout to that extent, if humanly possible. “Ask for forgiveness,” her father said. He was angry at his daughter for behaving like a bully and hurting a child. Her parents understood that the kids could have caused much more pain to him if they had not come at the right time. Though the neighbours were too kind to say anything about their daughter even once, he felt it was his responsibility to step in and act firmly. Asking for forgiveness was impossible for Dre. She whimpered, “Dad…” “Forgiveness!” Anthony repeated sternly. This made Dre stop her tantrums. She knew that her dad would not melt now. He was angry with her, for sure. Dre, with heavy steps, came forward and looked at the shaking Liam. “Dre is sorry.” She choked it out with hatred. Liam did not respond and hid his face in his mother’s lap, but Maxie smiled at Dre and took Liam inside. Dre faced her parents to see if they had forgiven her or not. Arora folded her arms to show how upset she was because of her. Her father’s face did not soften either. “Dre, if you cannot be nice to him, you don’t have to be bad to him either. I don’t want you within a foot of him. Got it?” her father scolded.
