The Golden Eyes

Trunks, bags, and baskets were packed and loaded into the car. The plot was locked for the time being. Arora and Maxie were getting emotional. “We are not going that far, honey. Mrs. Paige can always come and meet us,” Jacob said while hugging his wife. “Sure she can. But every day would be hard,” she whispered, and all laughed at this. Maxie and Uncle Jacob were close to Dre, too, though their baby was an exception. She was also standing at the side, hugging each one after another. “I will miss you,” Dre said to Maxie. Maxie only patted her face and placed a kiss on her forehead. “Oh dear, I forgot my purse on the poolside,” Maxie told her husband. “Let me bring it,” Jacob answered. “Leave it to me, uncle. You guys continue,” Dre said and moved towards the poolside. Reaching the area, Dre searched for the purse, but it was nowhere to be found. Dre sighed. A single job cannot be done by me. “You are looking for this,” Liam’s voice came in. “Yeah,” she replied and tried to take it. “I can give this,” he said. Dre rotated her head. “Always trying to take the credit, huh?” She moved back to exit the plot. “I am going away today, and this is all you have to say?” Liam said. Dre turned to him. “Bye,” she said in a monotone. “Just that?” he prodded. “What do you want? Loser,” she replied. Liam bit his cheek. “Why did you give me that chain?” Dre gave him an uninterested look. “Wasn’t that your birthday?” Liam moved towards her slowly but deliberately, while Dre remained where she stood without moving an inch. “Why, wolf?” he asked. Dre confronted him. “Your eyes,” she said, staring at him and holding his gaze as he returned it. “Are ugly,” she completed, “like wolves.” After saying that, she turned to move back. “Can I ask you a question?” he said. “No, I cannot bear you another second,” she replied. “Not even for fifteen minutes, too?” he negotiated. Dre stopped in her tracks. “Okay, speak. I only have fifteen minutes.” “Then let me give you a dare,” he said, trying to start a conversation. “Look, I don’t have time to play your stupid games. I did not play with you when we were kids. So, now you want to play with me to compensate for that time?” she said, mocking him. Seriously, play with him, she thought. “You are cracked,” she added. He stared at her for a while without saying anything. “Come on, answer—what would you do if I were the last person on earth to ask for help?” “Okay,” she replied. If he wanted an answer that badly, “If you were the last person on earth, I would still not come to you.” “Why?” “How old are you, five? My wish, my choice.” “You know life does not give you a choice every time.” “Well, I have one now,” she replied. “And I will have one after you, too. You are leaving from my life forever. You know that was not my choice, but it was a wish come true.” “I hope to never see you again, Liam.” With that, Dre turned and reached her parents, Liam walking behind her. Both couples hugged each other, and then Dre hugged Maxie and Jacob for the last time. Arora motioned to her daughter to give Liam a goodbye hug, too, but she wouldn’t move. “Dre…” Anthony said to his daughter. Dre walked straight to Liam and put both her arms around his neck, bidding him goodbye. Liam instantly pulled Dre into his secure, broad arms, clutching her waist in a tight embrace. Both mothers cooed at this. Dre tried to pull away within a second, but Liam’s hold tightened, making it hard to free herself. She surrendered to avoid a fight. The Ace family seated themselves in the car—Ace in the driver’s seat, while Maxie and Jacob were in the backseat. They drove off while Arora got a little emotional. In the car, Maxie and Jacob were a little sad and also a little happy. After all, they were going where they belonged. “After 10 years, honey,” Maxie said while placing her head on her husband’s chest. “Yes, dear. When we were coming here, I was the one driving, and now, when we are going back, my son is driving us,” he said, puffing his chest. Maxie smiled at his words. “Our struggle is over now. We are safe and secure.” “And powerful,” Jacob completed. “Dre said she will miss me,” Maxie said to her son. Liam smiled, hearing his mom’s indirect way of bringing Dre into the conversation. “I will miss her too,” Maxie said while playing with her husband’s fingers. “Not for too long, Mom,” Liam replied while driving. “Well, she hates your guts for sure, Liam,” she said to him, “but be sure that I will only accept her as my daughter-in-law,” she added, her eyes glinting gold. Golden eyes replied back, “Yes, Mom.”
