He slides the knife to my side, keeping it hidden.
" Serena, this is my new friend Vincent."
Vincent nodded at me and then started the car.
" It was nice meeting with you. "
Mathew looks like the guy I see all the
time in Detroit. Vincent, though... he's
different. He has manners, though, and I'm more thrown off by his manners.
than the compliment, but I don't have
time to dwell on it, because Matthew snakes his fingers up my thigh.
"And tonight she's all mine," Matthew said. He is smirking while he is looking at me and, I swear, I want to punch him so badly, but the knife in his pocket tells my brain to make an unexpected decision before I even know it-that silence is the best defense now.
" What do you think, should we hit up club Dazzle? " Matthew asked Vincent.
"That's a bit rough for her. Let's go
someplace better. What about Rainbow lounge?" Vincent replies.
My head started spinning. Ideas.
If he plans to take me to a club before dragging me back to his dorm room-or whatever cheap motel he plans to r**e me in-I might have a chance to escape.
Especially if I can get h... drunk. But
I have to get him to let his guard down first, which means playing along a little.
"Are we really going dancing? I've never been to a club before."
Batting my eyelashes at him might be a
bit much, but he falls for it enough that
He slides a possessive arm around me
again. He looks down at me through hooded eyes and speaks in a low, husky voice.
" You never told me you liked dancing."
The lustful thoughts I'm picking up from
He is enough to drown me. Swallowing back my revulsion, I force another smile and shrug.
" I guess I'm too shy. I'm not good at it, though. l just like dancing."
Matthew shivers and graces me with a
The vision of the two of us is grinding on a crowded dance floor. His hands are holding me in places that shouldn't be touched in public. Let's just step on the rainbow lounge." He said.
" Actually... If you're going to take me to my first club, I want to go to the Dark World."
Matthew's jaw falls slack, and Parker
Glance sharply at me in the rearview
mirror.
" Dark World? Girl, you've got a lot more spunk than I gave you credit for. But baby, you are way too sweet for a place like the Dark World. And Hell, I'm way too bad for that club." Matthew said to me.
"It's not so bad. A guy who comes into the store I work at goes there all the time. He says it's intense."
"Serena, the Dark World is dangerous. Crazy sh*t happens there... Unexplainable sh*t. They say it's cursed," Matthew said.
" It's all rumors." I rolled my eyes, faking a confidence that I didn't feel. I don't doubt the place is cursed, considering the creatures that run it and have their fun within its walls. Neither of the guys in this car knows what kind of true monsters frequent that nightmarish place. Humans believe they are the only intelligent beings in this world. They're wrong. I learned that for myself when I was only six. I came across one of them and found the dark world of those creatures who stayed hidden behind in the darkness.
" Are you scared?" I taunted Matthew, hoping he would not be able to refuse. Vincent finally speaks.
" Aren't you scared?"
He pins me with an intense look that I
can't decipher. I don't like the way he's
staring.
" Why would I be scared?" I replied to him, and he didn't say anything further. I've made him suspicious, and it's never good to have someone curious about me. There's too much I can't explain. Too
A lot I can't hide.
" Don't be a p***y, Matthew."
I could hear him clicking his tongue, it seemed like l'd hurt his male ego. Come on, take the bait.
"All right, fine. I'll see if my friend can get us in."
" I can get us to the club," Vincent said.
" That's great, man. "
Yes, that's it! Indeed, guys like to be
challenged. My lips curl into a smile of victory as I turn to look out at the car
window. But it somehow scares me that Matthew has that kind of friend because more humans don't get to step into the dark world club easily. Once we arrive, Matthew and I head for the back of the line, but Vincent shakes his head and walks straight toward the
bouncer. The way the people in line watch us as we bypass them makes me shiver.
Some are curious, others are annoyed.
and some smile pleasantly at us. Those are the ones who frighten me the most. It's the friendly ones that you really need to watch out for. Guarding the front door is a man nearly seven and a half feet tall and at least half as broad. If I had to guess, l'd say he's a troll, but don't care to get close enough to find out.
" Scott,"
" Vincent," he greets in a low, rumbling voice as he extends an arm the size of a tree trunk.
" Back so soon? I thought you'd be busy with-."
" Oh, I am." Vincent says, cutting the man off as he shakes his hand. His eyes flick briefly at Matthew and me before he smiles at the bouncer again.
" You know me. Always busy with
something."
The bouncer's gaze roams over Matthew.
and me, and he nodded slowly.
"I got you. Well, don't work all night. Make sure you blow off a little steam while you're here."
Vincent's obviously a regular here, and he's very interested in Matthew and me.
That can only mean one thing. Vincent isn't human, and whatever he is, it's something powerful enough to be a VIP in the Dark World. Maybe my real problem is Vincent. I look up to see both Vincent and Scott watching me with curiosity, suspicion even. I don't know what l'd be a suspect for, but this whole situation makes me sick to my stomach. What has Matthew dragged me into, and did I make it worse by coming here? Pulling my shoulders back, I met Vincent's gaze with not just confidence, but an attitude. Darkworlders respect arrogance.
" What's the matter? I thought you could get us in."
Scott's pierced brows climb up his huge, shiny forehead, and his mouth quirks up on one side into a crooked smile.
" I don't like trouble in my club, little lady. You're not looking to start any, are you?"
A face as fierce as a lion, a body built like a brick house, I guess l'd better pick my battles wisely.
"No, I'm only here for the booze." His attention shifted to Vincent, and they
exchange a few more words before we
finally get clearance to go inside the
club. Matthew entered behind me. I turned around just in time to catch Matthew glaring at Scott.
"She's not with Vincent, she's mine."
The troll could snap Matthew in half with
his pinky finger, but he can also see that
Matthew isn't worth the time and effort.
When we walk through the door, I feel the slight tingle of magic, as if we've passed through a glamour area protection ward. Matthew didn't notice a thing. Most
Humans wouldn't. I think I feel the magic because of my gift, but it could just be that I know it exists, so I'm more tuned in. Inside, the club is very posh. There are
several different rooms, with different
types of music playing. My guess is they cater to different species of Darkworlders and their unique tastes for pleasure. I'm curious, but not enough to want to stick around here any longer than necessary, so when Matthew drags me straight into the largest dance hall, I don't argue. There's a stage set up in the front for the DJ, and there are dancing cages on either side. At least, I hope they're used to dancing. Scanning the dim room, I quickly found what I was looking for.
A woman sits at the bar, staring out at
the crowd on the dance floor like a lion
would watch a herd of gazelles. She has flawless porcelain skin, long, sleek hair that's dark as night, and eyes just as black. She's beautiful-too beautiful to be
human-and she's on the prowl.Matthew's eyes find the same woman, and he gulps.
This is going to be too easy.I don't feel bad for what l'm about to do.Even if that creature does take interest in him, he'll probably still survive. The monsters here aren't stupid. There are rumors, but if there were too many actual human disappearances, the club would garner too much attention.Matthew blinks himself back from his stupor and smiles at me. His fingers dug into my hip.
" Let's dance,"
" Sure, but first I need a drink."
" I didn't expect this from you, Serena. You're full of surprises."
"Of course I'm surprised. You don't
know anything about me." His eyes flash eagerly-he's excited that I'm playing along.Dancing with him is the last thing I plan to do tonight.Shaking my head, I point to the open space at the bar next to the seductive Darkworlders.
I lead the way, heading straight for the
woman I noticed before. She's still there. Her attention is focused on a couple out on the dance floor that could use a lesson in PDA etiquette. What kind of supernatural being she is-don't know, don't care-as long as he can quickly get away from Matthew, who has been sticking to me like glue.As we reach the bar, he goes to talk with the bartender, supposedly to order some drinks. And that's when I begin to carry out my
plan.
" Hi,"
"Do I know you?"" No. I'm just trying to help my friend there. He thinks you are beautiful, but he is a bit shy to ask you out."
She turns to look at Matthew, and I can tell that she's interested in him.
" Hmm...Delicious." Her hand falls gently on Matthew's forearm, and her voice becomes a pur.
" I have a private room here in the club. Would you like to join me there?
Slipping her finger from Matthew's arm
over to his chest, she drags it up and
down his abdomen. Matthew shivers
beneath her touch.
" But... I...came here for Serena... I… We…" he stammered.
The woman pulls his gaze back with a
finger under his chin. She leans in close
to him and takes a deep breath.
" Serena can come with us. I don't mind
parties of three."
Matthew is gone now, lost to her seductive allure. He nods his head, unable to take his eyes from her.As she stands up from her stool and takes Mathew's hand, she smiles at me.
"Shall we, lovely Serena,"
"Sorry, but I think l'll pass. It's the time of the month. I don't want to mess up the party."
I flashed a silly grin and glanced at Matthew.
who is apparently shooting daggers at
me, knowing that he's been played.
" Okay, if you say so." Her eyes slid to Vincent, who was standing with Matthew. And listening to the conversation.
"And you, Vincent? Care to join us? You know you're always welcome."
I'm not surprised that she knows Vincent and I don't wait around to hear his answer. As soon as his attention turns from me to the woman, I slip away as quickly and quietly as can.I hurry past the bar and out the club entrance. I gave him one last smile and a salute, then spun on my heel and hurried away from the club. I bob my head and head to the street.
My gift has settled, but I'm not out of the woods yet. I'm still a woman alone on the streets of Detroit after dark. If l can just get to the nearest bus stop without running into a gang or any stray creature,I'll be good.
