# Marked by the Rejected Alpha
## Chapter 3: The Old Wound
Elena didn't sleep that night.
She sat on the windowsill of her room in the Ashwood pack house, knees pulled to her chest, watching the moon climb over the treeline and trying to convince her own body that the ache under her ribs was old news — a scar, not a fresh wound. It didn't work. It never fully worked, no matter how many times she lied to herself about it.
*It's twisting. It could kill us both.*
She almost believed he'd made it up. Almost. Except Damian Cross had never been a good liar — it was one of the few things she still, infuriatingly, respected about him. He'd been many cruel things in that clearing three years ago, but a liar wasn't one of them. He'd meant every word when he rejected her. And apparently, he meant every word now too.
A knock at her door pulled her out of it. Marcus, still in his day clothes, looking like a man who also hadn't planned on sleeping.
"You want to tell me what happened at the border," he said. Not a question.
She told him. All of it — the healers, the twisting bond, the threat hanging over both their lives. Marcus listened without interrupting, arms crossed, storm clouds building behind his eyes.
"There's an old law," he said finally. "Older than most packs remember. A severed bond that doesn't fully sever can sometimes be resolved through a Binding Trial — a formal challenge between the two wolves, witnessed by both packs. Whoever wins gets to choose: complete the bond, or end it permanently, clean, no more twisting."
Elena's stomach dropped. "You're saying I have to fight him."
"I'm saying you might have to fight him *or* mate him," Marcus said grimly. "Neither of which sounds like something either of you wants."
"He rejected me in front of everyone I knew," Elena said, and her voice finally, finally cracked, three years of careful control fraying at the edges. "I built myself back up from nothing, Marcus. Piece by piece. And now I'm supposed to bet my life on a trial that ends with either killing him or *marrying* him?"
Marcus's face softened in the way it rarely did — the way that reminded her he'd taken in a broken stranger three years ago and never once made her feel like a burden for it. "I'm saying you have options. And whatever you choose, Ashwood stands behind you. Every wolf in this pack would go to war for you tomorrow if you asked."
That, more than anything Damian had said at the border, was what finally broke the dam. Elena pressed the heels of her hands against her eyes and let herself, for one night, be the girl who'd been publicly destroyed at nineteen instead of the Beta who never let anyone see her flinch.
Marcus didn't say anything else. He just sat with her until the moon went down.
---
The message arrived at dawn, carried by a Silverfang courier too nervous to meet Elena's eyes.
*The Binding Trial is set for the next full moon, at the border clearing, witnessed by both packs — as tradition demands.*
*Whatever you choose when it ends, Elena, I'll accept it. I owe you that much and more.*
*— D.C.*
Elena read it twice, then folded it into a small, sharp square and held it too long before setting it down.
Two weeks. Two weeks to decide whether she wanted to end Damian Cross, or let him back into the parts of her he'd already broken once.
Her wolf, traitor that it was, already knew which one it wanted.
Elena wasn't sure she'd forgive either of them for it.
