JAXON
I realized staying at the hospital any longer was going to push me into doing something I most definitely would regret, and also something that could destroy my relationship with Adrian.
The moment I walked into the house, I felt my phone vibrating in my pockets. My head was still rolling in so much pain from subduing my anger that I didn't bother trying to find out who was trying to get through me.
I walked directly to the kitchen to get myself a glass of water first before heading back to my room.
While I sat, my eyes scanned the kitchen. I knew I was still going to get a handful from Adrian the moment he was back to himself because I had ordered a proper house cleaning right after the firefighters left.
Hailey wasn't definitely in a good position to clean up the mess in the house, and neither was I going to do that. Never!
My eyes soon rested on the oven, which had been the start of the tragedy.
"Should I call you clumsy or careless?" My thoughts travelled to Hailey. The tears that trickled down her cheeks, the fear that was etched on her face and the trembling of her body, I just found it impossible not to recall any of it.
If only she had not been careless. I wondered.
"You're just a visitor, so know your place." Again, her words replayed back in my head. No one had ever questioned or threatened my position. Not even a woman. Yet,today, she did, and I successfully restrained myself. I didn't think of using my power to tarnish her.
"Oh, God." I groaned, shutting my eyes for a few minutes to process my thoughts properly.
"What are you doing to me, Hailey?" I groaned, the beast inside me craving so much destruction. Unfortunately, there was no one to transfer it out on.
Hailey will still be at the hospital until whenever she wants to be back home. And for Adrian, since I had left the hospital,I was unaware of where he drove to, I was alone at home.
I picked up myself and began to walk into my room. It was noon already, Christmas noon specifically, yet I had nothing to do at the moment. So, I believed it was best I took a shower and a quick nap.
Just the moment I pushed the door to my room open, my phone vibrated again.
I hissed in irritation at the action that was considered to be disturbing. However, the display of the caller ID made me pick up immediately.
"What is it, Damian?" I questioned immediately. There was no time for pleasantries as his calls meant nothing but an emergency. That was when he had been programmed to do.
"Your brother. He -” He took a brief pause and let out a deep sigh.
"I have always said not to call me if you're going to hesitate.” I replied.
"I'm sorry, sir. Your brother seemed to have gotten himself involved with the cartel again." He finally broke the news. Although I wasn't surprised.
But why the cartel again? I wondered.
"Does my father know about this?" I continued with my question while I resumed pacing up and about the room, my head already thinking of solutions before even grasping the entire problems.
"I -” I'm not sure he does." Damian responded.
"What? You're not sure? Is that the job I gave you? Not to be sure?" I yelled,my voice filling my room.
"I'm sorry, sir. He just hasn't said anything yet." I could smell the fear even over the phone, but Damian was smart enough to keep his voice steady and firm.
"Find out if he knows, and do that now!" I ordered.
"I can't have him dragging the company down in a bid to save his son.”
"Yes, sir. I will.”
"Also, explain to me in detail what happened. Is he in their custody?" I diverted to the main course.
"No. He is right here in the mansion." He responded.
"That only means we're in for surprising demands. " I chuckled, taking my time to sit on my bed.
"I think so. He seemed to have made some business deal with them, more like an exchange. But he wasn't able to pay off his end of the bargain, and so, they're after him." Damian began to explain.
"What deal? And what did they bargain for as an exchange? I pressed further with my questions.
"He needed them to get back at Axel's billionairess for turning down his proposal, and in return,he was going to give them part of his stock shares of the company.”
"Oh, God brother." I groaned,my hands running through my head.
Again,he had been so foolish to get played and even think that he had a stock share in the company.
"Do you have any interest in knowing why he wants to get back at Axel's billionairess?" Damian's voice came up.
"Nah. There's no need for that." I responded. I was pretty sure that it had to do with her turning down his s****l proposal. The young man had always had a thing for blondes. But he suddenly got what he deserved. Someone couldn't be shaken by his threats and turned down his offer.
"We can also -" Damian's words trailed off the moment the door creaked open, revealing Adrian.
"Damian, set up a meeting between me and the cartel's leader. " I quickly said.
"What? Sir, they're dangerous." Damian objected.
"That is why I need a meeting with them before they unleash their beasts." I said, and with that,I put an end to the call. Whatever he might have to say next can wait. I could see a need on Adrian's stares while he stood, watching.
"You're back." My eyes rested on him.
“Some trouble at home?” He asked.
"Trouble at the office precisely." I responded while he walked over to my side and sat beside me on the bed.
“Then what is it? Why do you need a meeting with the cartel? You now do business with them?" He pressed further with his questions, his voice cold, yet expectant.
"Mason decided to be stupid again." I responded with a brief summary, which I believed he could catch on quickly.
"Siblings, right?” He chuckled. “They can be full of trouble most of the time, right?" I knew he was also referring to his sister, Hailey.
It was at that moment I saw the downcast look on his face. The guilt of reprimanding his sister at such a heartbreaking moment had begun to tell on him.
"Yes. They can be most of the time." I finally said.
