Dahlia
The attacker came straight at us.
He was massive, eyes burning red with pure rage. His claws were already extended. I froze for a split second, my back pressed against the cold wall. Roman moved like lightning. He shoved me hard behind him and met the wolf head on.
They collided with a loud crash. Roman stood still, knife flashing in his hand. The attacker swung his claws, aiming for Roman’s throat. Roman ducked at the last moment and drove his knife deep into the wolf’s side.
The attacker roared in pain and grabbed Roman’s arm, throwing him against the wall. Roman hit hard but didn’t stay down. He rolled to his feet, grabbed a broken wooden chair leg from the floor, and swung it like a bat. It hit the attacker’s knee with a sickening sound.
“Stay behind me!” Roman shouted.
I nodded, breathing fast. My heart felt like it would explode. Smoke was filling the hallway now. Screams and growls came from every direction.
The attacker lunged again, this time trying to get past Roman to reach me. Roman stepped in the way and stabbed him twice in the stomach. Blood poured out. The wolf swung wildly and caught Roman across the ribs. Three deep gashes opened up on his side, Roman hissed in pain but kept fighting.
He moved like a machine. Every move was fast and precise. He used the chair leg to block a claw strike, then dropped it and switched to his knife again. In one smooth motion, he grabbed the attacker’s wrist, twisted it, and jammed the blade into the wolf’s throat.
Blood splashed on the floor, the attacker dropped to his knees, then fell forward and stopped moving.
Roman turned to me right away, blood ran down his side and soaked his shirt. His gray eyes looked wild.
“Are you okay?” he asked, voice low and rough.
“I’m fine,” I said quickly. My eyes went to his wound. “But you’re not, that looks bad.”
“It’s nothing.” He grabbed my arm and pulled me forward. “We have to move. More of them are coming.”
We ran down the hallway. The smoke was thicker now and another explosion rocked the estate somewhere close. The floor shook so hard that I stumbled. Roman caught me around the waist before I could fall. His hand stayed there for a moment longer than necessary. Even through my thin robe, I felt the heat from his palm.
My body reacted instantly. I remembered what we were doing in my room before my father knocked. The way Roman had me under him, the way he felt, the way I wanted more.
Not now, Dahlia. Focus.
We turned the corner and two more attackers appeared. These ones were still in human form but just as dangerous. One held a gun, the other had claws out.
Roman pushed me against the wall and stepped in front of me again.
“Get down,” he ordered.
The one with the gun fired. Roman moved fast, dodging the bullet. He threw his knife with perfect aim. It sank into the gunman’s shoulder, the man screamed and dropped the weapon.
The second attacker charged at Roman. They fought hand to hand. Fists flew, Roman blocked a punch, then delivered a hard elbow to the man’s face. Blood flew from the attacker’s nose. Roman followed up with a knee to the stomach, then grabbed the man’s head and slammed it against the wall. The man went limp.
The first attacker was still trying to fight, even with the knife in his shoulder. He pulled it out and came at Roman again. Roman picked up the dropped gun and shot him twice in the chest. The man collapsed.
Everything went quiet for a few seconds.
Roman turned back to me. His chest was rising and falling fast. Blood covered his hands and side. He looked dangerous and somehow, that made heat pool between my legs.
He moved closer, too close. His body almost touched mine.
“You keep saving me,” I whispered. My voice came out breathy.
His eyes dropped to my lips. “It’s my job.”
“Is that all it is?” I asked. I reached up and touched the side of his face. His jaw was tight.
Roman’s hand came up and gripped my wrist. Not hard enough to hurt, but firm. For a moment I thought he might kiss me. His eyes were dark with hunger. I wanted him to. I wanted him to push me against this wall and take what we started earlier.
Instead, he pulled my hand down.
“We can’t,” he said, his voice strained. “Not here, not now.”
He was right but my body didn’t care.
He let go of me and checked the gun he took. “The safe room is close, stay right behind me.”
We started moving again. My legs felt weak and it wasn’t just from running. Every time Roman touched me, even to protect me, it sent electricity through my skin. I hated how much I wanted him. He was supposed to be someone I could break. Instead, he was breaking all my walls.
We reached the safe room door. Roman punched in the code fast. The heavy metal door opened and he pushed me inside first, then followed and locked it behind us.
The room was quiet, too quiet after all the chaos outside.
I turned to him. “Let me look at your side.”
He hesitated, then sat down on the bench. I grabbed the first aid kit from the shelf and moved between his legs. My hands shook a little as I cleaned the wounds. They were deep yet he didn’t flinch once.
“You fight like you’ve done this a thousand times,” I said quietly.
“I have.”
I looked up at his face. He was watching me closely. The air between us felt thick.
“Roman…”
He reached up and tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear. His fingers brushed my neck. I shivered.
“Don’t look at me like that,” he said, his voice low. “Not when I’m trying to keep you alive.”
“Then stop making it hard,” I shot back.
A small, dark smile touched his lips. It was the first time I’d seen anything close to a real smile from him. It made my stomach flip.
The monitors on the wall suddenly beeped. Red alert lights flashed. More attackers were heading towards our location.
Roman stood up fast. He checked the gun and handed me a small knife from the cabinet.
“Stay close,” he said. “If they get in here, you run. Understand?”
I nodded, but I wasn’t planning on leaving him.
He positioned himself in front of the door, ready for whatever came next. I stood right behind him, heart pounding.
The estate was still under attack. My father and brother were out there fighting, people were dying and here I was, trapped in this small room with a man I shouldn’t want this badly.
But the real danger wasn’t just the attackers outside.
It was the way Roman made me feel. Like I was finally seen, like I was his. And that feeling was growing stronger every second.
The beeping on the monitor got faster, they were almost here.
Roman’s body tensed. "Get ready,” he said.
I gripped the knife tighter.
