Chapter - 10

Norri The next morning, I woke up earlier than usual. For a few seconds, I stared at the ceiling, trying to remember where I was. Then everything came rushing back. My family. The wolves. The cemetery. The man who saved me. And the fact that I had apparently turned into a werewolf. I sat up and looked at my hands. They looked completely normal. No claws. No fur. Nothing. “Great,” I muttered. “Maybe I imagined everything.” I got dressed and went downstairs. Harvey was already in the kitchen, preparing breakfast. “Good morning, Miss Elenor.” I groaned. “Norrie.” He smiled. “Good morning, Norrie.” “Seriously? Are we doing this every day now?” He placed a plate on the table. “You should eat before school.” I looked at the food. “I don’t think I can.” “You need to.” I sighed and sat down. School. A normal school day. That was what Alaric wanted, right? A normal life. Except I had died inside a little every day since my family was murdered. And now I was apparently a supernatural creature. Normal. Sure. I finished breakfast and grabbed my bag. Harvey drove me to school, and the entire way there, I kept looking out the window. I couldn’t stop thinking about Rylan. I wondered if he was going to be there. I wondered if he’d come looking for me. And, annoyingly, I wondered if I was going to see him again. When we reached the school, Harvey looked at me through the mirror. “Straight home after school.” I rolled my eyes. “Yes, Dad.” He frowned. “Sorry.” He nodded. “Be careful.” I stepped out of the car and walked towards the school. For the first time in days, I was surrounded by teenagers complaining about homework, teachers and cafeteria food. It felt strange. Almost comforting. “Hey!” I turned around. Lucien was running towards me with his backpack hanging from one shoulder. “You actually came.” “Why wouldn’t I?” “I thought you might run away again.” “I’ve been running away from enough things lately.” He laughed. “Come on. We’re going to be late.” We walked inside together. The first few classes were surprisingly normal. Almost boring. And honestly, I needed boring. By lunch, Lucien had already told me which teachers to avoid, which cafeteria food was terrible and which hallway everyone used when they wanted to skip class. “You’ve been here for, what, five minutes?” I asked. “Five minutes is enough to learn everything.” “You’re ridiculous.” “I prefer charming.” I laughed. We were walking towards the cafeteria when someone bumped into Lucien’s shoulder. “Watch where you’re going.” Lucien stopped. I looked at the guy. He was taller than us, with two other guys behind him. “Wasn’t me,” Lucien said. The guy stepped closer. “You’re new here, aren’t you?” I frowned. “Yeah.” He looked me up and down. “Thought so.” Lucien grabbed my arm. “Come on.” We started walking away. “Hey,” the guy called. We stopped. “What’s your name?” “Norrie.” He smiled. “Well, Norrie, welcome.” There was something about the way he said it that made me uncomfortable. We kept walking. “What was that about?” I asked. “Nothing.” “Lucien.” He sighed. “Just ignore him.” We reached the cafeteria and sat down. I was halfway through eating when I heard something. A pencil dropped across the room. Then someone whispered. Then a chair scraped against the floor. I looked around. “What?” Lucien stared at me. “What?” “You heard that?” “Heard what?” I shook my head. “Nothing.” Maybe I was imagining things. I turned instantly when I heard someone laughing behind me. Nobody was looking at me. My heart started beating faster. I looked at Lucien. “Are you okay?” “Yeah.” I wasn’t. Something was wrong with me. After lunch, we headed to class. The hallway was crowded, and someone suddenly shoved past me. I stumbled. “Sorry,” the guy muttered without turning around. I looked down; my books had fallen everywhere. “Seriously?” I bent down to pick them up, before I could grab one, another student kicked it further down the hallway. I looked up. It was the same guy from lunch. He smiled. “Oops.” I stood up. “Pick it up.” He laughed. “Or what?” I don’t know what happened. One second, I was standing there. The next, I had grabbed his wrist. He stopped laughing. I didn’t even realise how tightly I was holding him until his face changed. “Let go.” I did. He stumbled backwards. “What the hell?” Everyone around us went silent. I stared at my hand. I hadn’t meant to hurt him. I hadn’t even tried. Lucien grabbed my shoulder. “Come on.” We walked away before anyone could say anything else. “What was that?” he asked. “I don’t know.” “You nearly broke his wrist.” “I didn’t mean to.” He looked at me. “Are you sure?” I nodded. But deep down, I wasn’t. I had felt it, that strange strength, the same strength I had felt when I killed that man. My stomach twisted; by the time school ended, I couldn’t wait to get home. Harvey was waiting outside. I would have sighed but watching him out there made me feel safe and guarded, I got into the car. He looked at me. “What happened?” “Nothing.” He stared at me for a second. “You’re lying.” “I got into a small argument.” “With whom?” “No one.” He sighed. “Alaric isn’t going to like this.” “I don’t care.” He didn’t answer. When we reached home, I went straight inside. Alaric was standing in the living room. His eyes immediately went to the necklace around my neck. “Where did you go?” “School.” “Did anything happen?” I froze. “No.” He stared at me. Then he looked at Harvey. “Take her necklace off.” “What?” “Norrie, take it off.” I touched the crystal. “Why?” “Just do it.” I slowly removed it. The moment I held it in my hand, the crystal flickered. Alaric’s expression changed. “What?” The witch rushed into the room from behind him. She looked at the necklace. “That’s impossible.” “What?” I asked. She took it from my hand. The crystal had a tiny c***k running through the middle. Alaric’s face hardened. “You told me this would work.” “It should have.” “But it didn’t.” She looked at me. “I don’t understand.” Alaric stepped closer to her. “You said nothing would be able to track her.” “I said the spell would hide her essence.” “Then why is the crystal breaking?” “I don’t know.” He slammed his hand against the table. “Then figure it out.” She flinched. I stared at both of them. “What are you talking about?” Neither answered. I looked at the witch. “What did you do to me?” “Nothing.” “Then why isn’t it working?” She looked at Alaric. He noticed. “What?” She slowly turned back to me. “Have you been around any supernatural beings since the spell was cast?” I hesitated. “Maybe.” “Who?” I looked down. Alaric’s eyes narrowed. “Norrie.” “I don’t know.” “Tell me.” I swallowed. “I met someone.” “Who?” “A guy.” Alaric’s expression darkened. “What guy?” I didn’t answer. The witch stepped closer. “Did he touch you?” “No.” I paused. “Well… maybe.” Alaric closed his eyes. “God.” “What?” He looked at me, “Did you kill someone?” My heart started pounding in my chest. Nobody spoke a word; I looked at the floor. The silence answered for me. Alaric’s jaw tightened. “You turned.” I looked up. “I didn’t know.” “You knew enough to lie to me.” “I was scared!” “You should have told me.” “How was I supposed to tell you?” I shouted. “Hi, Alaric, by the way, I accidentally killed someone and turned into a f*****g werewolf?” His expression changed. The anger disappeared for a second. “What happened?” I swallowed. “I was attacked.” I told him everything. The cemetery. The men. The bullets. Rylan. And the man I killed. When I finished, Alaric looked at the witch. “Can you fix it?” She shook her head. “No.” “What do you mean, no?” “The spell wasn’t designed for an Alpha who had already turned.” Alaric went completely still. I looked between them. “Wait.” My voice came out quieter. “Why does that matter?” The witch didn’t answer. I looked at Alaric. “What happens now?” He stared at me for a long moment. Then he said something that made my blood run cold. “You’re not just an Alpha anymore.” I frowned. “Then what am I?” He didn’t answer, and somehow, that scared me more than everything else.
