I looked at Yemi and whispered, "I didn't mean to hurt you," my hands shaking. His normally calm and reserved expression was now broken. The man I loved was looking at me like I was a complete stranger, untrustworthy, and a traitor.
"I didn't want you to know about this. I swear, I believed I was keeping you safe. With the weight of the secret I had been carrying for so long suddenly weighing me down from the inside out, my voice trailed off.
Yemi stood motionless, staring at me, but his eyes were cold and aloof, as if I were an enemy. It was something much worse than the rage I had anticipated. It was incredulity, the kind of pain that words could never express.
"Why didn't you inform me earlier?" His voice was hardly audible as he whispered, as though the words themselves hurt him.
