Chapter 013

1236 Words

"Why would you do this, Lola?" Even though Yemi's comments are precise and controlled, the raw sorrow is audible as his voice cracks. I feel sick to my stomach because of the anger in his dark, suspiciously narrowed eyes. "Why would you align yourself with him?" I can't think of the perfect words to describe it, so I stand immobile, my chest heavy. Desmond had attacked Yemi's business quickly and strategically. Every action appeared to be intended to undermine everything Yemi had created and everything they had worked for. And now I found myself in the midst of it, having to make a choice that I thought would ruin everything. Despite my best efforts to maintain my composure, I manage to say, "I didn’t have a choice," in a shaking voice. Yemi spits out, "Then make one," his fists tensed.
