THE FATHER TRUTH

Chapter 14: The Father's Truth Elena's world tilted sideways. "That's not possible," she said, though even as the words left her mouth, doubt crept in, poisoning every certainty she'd once held about her father. "He wouldn't. He couldn't have known and just—" "Let it happen?" Damian finished gently, though there was no accusation in his voice, only careful concern. "Elena, I don't know if it's true. Marcus Webb is a man fighting for his own freedom right now. He has every incentive to shift blame wherever it lessens his own culpability." "But you believe it's possible." Damian hesitated, and that hesitation told her everything. "I believe your father is capable of terrible choices when he's cornered. I've seen it firsthand — the Sophia situation, the way he manipulated the narrative to protect himself for seven years. I don't want to believe he'd let your mother die to save himself. But I also can't promise you he wouldn't have." Elena pressed her palms against her eyes, exhaustion and grief and fury tangling into something she didn't have words for. "I need to ask him myself." "Elena—" "I know what you're going to say. Security, safety, careful planning." She dropped her hands, meeting his gaze with steady resolve despite the storm inside her. "But this is my father, Damian. I need to look him in the eye and hear the truth from him directly, not filtered through federal investigators or desperate plea deals." Damian studied her for a long moment before nodding slowly. "Then we go together. Tonight, before he has time to prepare a defense or coordinate a story with his lawyers." Her father was waiting when they arrived, seated in the same chair he'd collapsed into days earlier when the truth about Sophia first came to light. He looked smaller somehow, diminished, like the weight of every secret he'd carried for years had finally begun crushing him from the inside out. "I heard about Marcus," he said before Elena could speak, his voice hollow. "I assume that's why you're here." "Did you know?" Elena's voice trembled despite her attempt at composure. "About the brakes. About what was going to happen to Mom before it happened." Her father's silence stretched long enough that Elena felt something inside her chest crack open with dread. "Dad. Did you know?" "I suspected," he said finally, voice breaking. "Marcus came to me two days before the accident, told me your mother was becoming a serious liability, that she wouldn't stop digging into the financial irregularities no matter how many times I asked her to let it go. He said he was going to handle the situation. I didn't ask what that meant. I told myself I didn't want to know." "But you knew enough to be afraid." "Yes." The admission came out broken, ragged. "God help me, Elena, yes. I knew enough to suspect something terrible was coming, and I said nothing. I did nothing. I told myself if I didn't ask questions, I couldn't be blamed for the answers." "She was your wife." Elena's voice rose, years of grief finally finding an outlet in fury. "My mother. And you let her die to protect your own company, your own reputation, your own comfortable lie." "I have spent every single day since then hating myself for that choice," her father said, tears finally spilling down his weathered face. "I told myself sending Sophia away was different, that I was protecting her from danger, but the truth is I was protecting myself from the consequences of choices I'd already made. Everything after that accident was just me trying to bury guilt so heavy I couldn't survive looking at it directly." Elena stared at her father — really looked at him — and saw not the powerful businessman who'd built an empire, but a broken, guilt-ridden man who'd spent seven years running from a truth that had finally caught up to him. "I don't know if I can forgive you," she said quietly. "For any of it. Mom, Sophia, the years of lies." "I'm not asking for forgiveness." Her father met her eyes, something like peace settling into his devastated expression. "I'm asking for the chance to finally tell the truth, whatever consequences follow. I've spent seven years being a coward, Elena. I don't want to die that way." Damian, who'd remained silent throughout the exchange, finally spoke. "The federal investigators will want a formal statement. Given what you've just admitted, you should have legal counsel present before making anything official." "I don't want counsel protecting me from consequences anymore." Her father's voice was steadier now, resolved. "I'll tell them everything. All of it. Whatever happens to me afterward, at least Elena and Sophia will finally have the truth instead of more lies." Elena felt something complicated shift in her chest — not forgiveness, not yet, but perhaps the beginning of something that might eventually resemble it. "Sophia deserves to hear this from you directly. Not through investigators or news reports." "I know." Her father's voice cracked. "Do you think she'd be willing to see me? After everything?" "I don't know," Elena admitted honestly. "But I think you owe her the chance to decide that for herself." Her father nodded, tears still falling freely, seven years of carefully constructed lies finally crumbling into something that resembled genuine remorse. As Elena turned to leave, her phone buzzed with a message from Vera, the timing eerily precise given everything unfolding. Marcus Webb's lawyer just contacted our legal team. He's offering full cooperation and evidence against a third party in exchange for immunity. Says there's someone else involved in Elena's mother's death who hasn't been named yet. Someone still active in both companies today. Elena's stomach dropped as she showed Damian the message, watching his expression shift from confusion to dawning, horrified realization. "Someone still active in both companies," he repeated slowly. "Elena, that could mean someone on my board. Or—" His phone rang before he could finish the thought, Vera's name flashing on the screen. He answered immediately, expression darkening with every word he heard. "Understood. Get her into protective custody immediately." He ended the call, turning to Elena with an expression that made her blood run cold. "What happened?" "Marcus just named the third party involved in your mother's death," Damian said grimly. "And Elena, it's someone we've trusted from the very beginning of this entire situation."
