THE FATHER'S CONFESSION

Chapter 5: The Father's Confession Damian didn't come back that night. Elena sat curled on the edge of her father's old couch until nearly three in the morning, waiting for a car that never came, a phone call that never arrived. Her father had gone quiet after his confession, retreating to his study with the kind of silence that felt like punishment enough. She finally took a cab back to the penthouse alone, her mind spinning through everything — a twin sister she'd never known about, a car accident buried under seven years of silence, her father's trembling hands, and Damian's face crumbling for just one unguarded second before he'd walked out into the dark. The penthouse was empty when she arrived. Cold, dark, exactly the kind of place that made loneliness feel architectural. She didn't sleep. Damian returned just after dawn, and Elena knew immediately that whatever conversation he'd had with his father had gone badly. His tie was gone. His jacket was gone. His usually immaculate composure looked like something that had been physically fought for and barely won. "You look terrible," she said quietly, standing from the kitchen island where she'd been nursing a cup of coffee she hadn't touched. "Thank you." His voice was hoarse, stripped of its usual cold precision. He poured himself a drink he didn't need at seven in the morning and stared at it instead of drinking it. "What did he say?" Damian's jaw clenched. For a long moment, she thought he wouldn't answer at all. "He confirmed it," he said finally. "Everything your father said. My father orchestrated part of the collapse alongside him. Some kind of joint scheme that went wrong — they were trying to protect both companies from a hostile takeover, and instead they destroyed each other." "And your mother—" "Was collateral damage in a war she never knew existed." His hand tightened around the glass until his knuckles went white. "For seven years, I thought Voss Industries alone destroyed my family. I built my entire life around that lie. Every deal, every decision, every ounce of ambition — it was all fuel for a fire that wasn't even burning the right house." "Damian." Elena stepped closer, some instinct pulling her toward him despite everything. "I'm so sorry." "Don't." He set the glass down harder than necessary, the sound sharp in the quiet kitchen. "Don't apologize for something you didn't do. God, Elena, I married you to punish a family that wronged mine, and it turns out my own father is just as guilty as yours." "So what happens now?" His eyes lifted to hers, dark and stormy, filled with something raw and unguarded that made her breath catch. "I don't know. For the first time in seven years, I genuinely don't know what I'm supposed to do next." The silence between them stretched, heavy and fragile. "There's something else," he said quietly. "Something your father mentioned that I haven't been able to stop thinking about." "What?" "He said Sophia's death wasn't a simple accident." Damian's voice dropped lower, careful, like he was handling something breakable. "He said the brakes had been tampered with. That someone wanted your mother off the road that night, and Sophia was in the car she wasn't supposed to be in." Elena's blood went cold. "That's — that's insane. Who would want to hurt my mother?" "I don't know yet. But given everything else that's come out in the last twelve hours, I don't think we can afford to assume it was random anymore." She sank onto one of the kitchen stools, her legs suddenly unsteady beneath her. "This is too much. A sister I never knew existed. A car accident that might have been sabotage. Our fathers conspiring together and then apparently turning on each other. I don't even know what's real anymore." Damian moved closer, slowly, like he was approaching something fragile he didn't want to startle. When he reached her, he crouched slightly so they were eye level, his hand coming up to gently tilt her chin toward him. "I know this isn't what either of us signed up for," he said quietly. "But I promise you, Elena — whatever happened seven years ago, whatever our fathers did or didn't do, I am going to find out the truth. All of it. And I'm not going to let you face it alone." Her eyes stung, emotion she'd been holding back all night finally threatening to break free. "Why do you care? Two days ago you wanted to destroy my family." "Two days ago I didn't know you." His thumb brushed lightly against her jaw, and her pulse stuttered at the contact. "Two days ago I didn't know what it felt like to watch you sign a contract with shaking hands and feel something crack open in my chest that had been sealed shut for seven years." "Damian—" "I still don't fully trust you," he admitted, voice low and rough. "Part of me still wonders if you knew more than you're saying. But God help me, Elena, that part of me is getting quieter every time you look at me like that." Her heart pounded so hard she was certain he could feel it. "Like what?" "Like you're not entirely sure whether to hate me or—" He stopped himself, jaw tightening, some restraint fraying visibly at the edges. "Or what?" His eyes dropped to her mouth, and the air between them turned electric, charged with everything neither of them was saying out loud. "Or kiss me," he said quietly. "Which, for the record, is a significantly worse idea than hating me." Her breath caught. "Is it?" "Elena." Her name came out like a warning and a plea all at once. "If you're not going to step back right now, you should probably tell me, because I am fighting every rational instinct I have not to close this distance." She should have stepped back. She knew she should have stepped back. Instead, she stayed exactly where she was, close enough to feel the heat radiating off him, close enough to see the exact moment his restraint finally broke. His hand slid from her jaw into her hair, and he leaned in slowly, giving her every chance to pull away, his voice dropping to barely a whisper against her lips. "Tell me to stop," he murmured, "or I swear to God, Elena, I'm going to kiss you like I've wanted to since the moment you signed that contract."
