Chapter 30

Lucien As I was standing in the dungeon, the smell of dirt and body fluids hit me, making me sick to my stomach. It was dark down here, with only a dim light down the hall. But my vampire senses made everything easy to discern. Damien hadn't been able to get any useful information out of Luna Dolores, it was time for that to change. If Damien knew the whole truth, if he had seen the broken women sitting in a chained row waiting to be sold, if he had been the one to identify the brutally broken and r***d bodies of the dead girls, or if he knew that Lily was Zane's true mate, then he wouldn´t have been so lenient just because Dolores happened be a woman. But I am nothing if not a man of my word. I had promised Zane not to say anything about Lily until he was ready, so I'll keep his secret for now. However, I had never promised anyone not to do whatever it took to find out the truth. And if that meant I had to hurt one woman to save fifty, then that's what I would do. As I went further down the hall, a foreign smell hit my nostrils. I stopped dead in my tracks, tilting my head to listen. Out of the shadows stepped a dark, sinister figure. With an aura that reflected so much danger that I had to strain myself not to take a step back. The fact that he got into a pack that had one of the best securities in the entire United States undetected said a lot about how powerful this vampire really was. “I appreciate that you could come on such short notice, Jaden.” He chuckled ominously at me. "Few beings appreciate my presence, Lord Kieran. Even though many may need it." Jaden was at least 6´8” tall, with broad shoulders that were covered in a gothic leather trench coat with a turned-down collar. He pulled his hood back, reveling his long raven-black hair. However, that wasn´t what caught anyone’s attention when they had the misfortune of meeting him. His eyes had such a bright blue colour that they seemed almost colorless, with a ring of deep red surrounding them, showing his vampire origin. No one knew why his eyes were a different color from the rest of our kind, but most beings were uncomfortable with holding his gaze for too long. It wasn't helped by the fact that he had a large scar that stretched from his eyebrow, over his right eye and down his cheek. “I´m not most people Jaden. But it is true that I need your help. I have sent you all the information I have. But there is one thing I left out. Lily was slowly poisoned by silver here in this pack before she was sold. I want to know by whom.” Jaden nodded at me as he went to open the first prison door. "So be it. Let the fun begin," he said with a wicked smirk on his face. Dolores looked miserable as she sat curled up in a corner, chained to the wall. But that didn't stop her from putting her nose in the air in a patronizing way when she heard us enter. "Go away. Just like I didn't tell you anything yesterday, I won't tell you anything today.” Jaden didn't answer, he just stepped forward and pulled her up by her arm, earning himself a shriek. I unlocked the chain attached to the wall while Dolores screamed profanities at us, trashing around. Once put on the chair in the middle of the room, hands chained behind her back, she went quiet, finally giving herself time to acknowledge who had entered her prisoncell. Her gaze wandered between us, realization dawning on her. "I'm sure you've heard the stories about Jaden. He emerges from the shadows to punish the lowest of scum. Is he evil or is he good? No one really knows, as few survived the encounter.” I began to whisper as I circled her chair slowly. "He is impossible to tame and dangerous to cross as his powers are unknown, but everyone knows they are lethal.” I continued as Jaden leaned against the wall straight in front of her chair. Sharpening his daggers while staring at her with cold swirling eyes, giving her a sinister smirk. I could see that she began to tremble, knowing that we were done playing her games. Good. "You have one last chance to tell the truth. Who did you deal with when you sold Lily and who helped you carry her out of the packhouse? I hissed at her. She looked up at me with renewed vigor. “Fu*k you!” She screeched, making spit land on my black button-down shirt. “So be it.” I announced, nodding at Jaden to continue. He stretched himself to his full length and stepped forward. Letting his stifling power ooze into the room as he chuckled darkly. “Are you sure you want to stay for this, Lucien?” He asked. “I´m sure. Please, begin.” Dolores' scream as the first dagger sunk into her leg echoed through the dungeon while I braced myself for what I was sure would be a long, awful night. *** Nolan I had surveilled the prince's apartment. Planned everything down to the smallest detail when they had left New York. At first, I was furious, but before I killed the weak werewolf they had as a security guard, I succeeded in squeezing some information out of him. Apparently, a doctor from the Crescent moon pack had shown up and together they had left the building in a hurry. My little mate was sick. Worry gnawed at me and I wasn´t even there to comfort her. I had noticed that she was weak, but I didn't think it was that bad. In pure rage, I tore their whole apartment apart. Those bastards deserved it anyway. I had found the clothes I got for Lily thrown in the trash. I knew she would never do that. I'm sure that damn prince went crazy with jealousy when she smelled like me. The thought of him possibly marking her with his own scent instead drove me crazy to the point where I took a broken whiskey bottle and hammered it into the TV over and over again. When my anger subsided and I started thinking rationally again, I went to pick up a spray from a witch to cover my scent before I left New York. But how I was going to get into one of the most secure packs in the United States was another matter entirely, covered scent or not. I thought luck was on my side when I encountered a she-wolf in a cafe outside their territory in the closest human town. I listened to their conversation as they talked extensively about the prince. So, I knew that Zane and Lily weren´t mated yet and that this she-wolf was both greedy and ambitious. When her friend had gone to the ladies' room, I struck up a conversation. Which went in exactly the direction I had desired. Her name was Carmen, and she was easily manipulated with beautiful words about court life, power and wealth. The deal was to distract Zane so I could get to Lily. If she failed to receive Zane´s mark, I promised her to become my mistress at court as compensation for her help getting Lily out. The fact that she thought she would interest me in the slightest after Lily becomes my mate said something about how conceited she really was. Carmen was a stunning woman with blond hair, high cheekbones and legs that went on forever. Yet she had nothing against my Lily and her vanity was appalling. Although she´d been a decently good fu*k to help get rid of the excess of my anger and frustration, I´d been bored with her the minute it was over and sent her out of my hotel room as fast as I could afterwards. Tonight, me and Carmen agreed to meet 10 minutes outside the pack border. I had been without Lily for 6 long days now. Guilt and longing consumed me. Carmen insisted that tonight would be a good night to take Lily back, because the pack was busy drinking at the bonfire. I knew enough about Lily to know she wouldn't be there, and it was rumored that the Prince had never turned down a party. This would be the perfect opportunity to go in and out without being detected. Except my inside woman was 5 minutes late. Where the hell was she? If she sc*ewed this up, she better hope that I´d never find her. Because so help me god I will tear anyone that comes in between me and Lily to pieces.
