Chapter 26

Lucien I ended the conversation with Zane on the phone. He was probably pi*sed. I couldn't resist chuckling to myself. But this was just too interesting to miss out on. Alpha Corbin looked murderous as he stood, panting after screaming profanities, in the doorway of the packhouse dining room. Two werewolf warriors were lying wounded on the floor They were from his pack, which meant they went against their alpha, interesting. In the room with me were some of Ronan's warriors and Corbin's son, Lily's little brother, Adam and Mason, who had jumped over the table, standing in a defensive stance after roaring back when Alpha Corbin had stormed the room just now. Everyone had risen from their seats. Adam looked horrified. However, Mason looked ready to beat the cr*p out of him. Who would have thought the laid-back Beta had it in him. "I've spent 5 days in confinement with no explanation whatsoever. Then I was told that my mate had been thrown into the dungeon and that a temporary alpha has taken over my pack! Enough of this!! I want all of you out of my pack at once!” Corbin roared in his alpha voice. Mason answered with a growl so fierce that Corbin looked surprised for a second. I leaned back against the table, amused. “You failed to mention that we threw your oldest son in the dungeon next to that horrible woman you call mate about an hour ago.” Mason grumbled. “YOU DID WHAT?!” Corbin roared so loud my poor ears felt like they were going to start bleeding. “Your son is a self-centered bully, a liar and not even a real alpha.” Mason stated. “What the hell do you mean by not a real alpha?” Corbin shouted back. Adam looked puzzled, while I couldn´t hold back a chuckle. "Can you really say you don't know? Are you really that daft? Jake isn´t your firstborn, is he now?” Corbin's expression went from confused, denial to anger in a heartbeat. “What the hell are you insinuating? Jake is my first-born son. Leave my pack immediately or I will see it as an act of war!” "Your pack is under investigation by order of His Royal Highness, Prince Zane. I have been assigned Alpha until we know if you and your son are suitable to lead this pack. Which I believe is highly unlikely by the way. Stand down or face the consequences here and now, Corbin.” Mason growled, and that hot-headed alpha had the audacity to laugh. My oh my, this will be interesting indeed. Zane would have loved this little show. '“I challenge you, Alpha Corbin, to trial by combat for the right to lead the Blood moon pack, for now and future generations.” Mason roared, shocking everyone in the room, including me. Corbin looked just as shocked, but quickly returned to a sneer. Bloody hell, I didn´t expect this when I woke up this morning. Corbin crossed his arms and snorted mockingly at Mason's challenge. “You can't be serious? You´re a Beta. Do you realize that you have given yourself a death sentence?” Corbin taunted. You could tell Mason was angry. However, he maintained a control and presence of mind that only the most well-trained warriors possessed. "We all know what and who you are Corbin. You are a murderer of the worst kind. You got your true mate to kill herself. Your daughter was forced to grow up poor and as an outcast. Only to be sold as a s*xslave by that wretched b*tch you chose as a mate. And we all know that when our true mate dies, a part of us dies with them even if we haven't marked each other yet, making you weak! And I, Alpha Corbin, am not just a Beta. I was raised at the warrior academy and have trained with the top warriors in the world since I was a boy and, unlike you, I am not weak due to bad choices in life.” Mason scolded. The gauntlet has been thrown, folks. Wait till Damien and Zane hear all about this. I almost felt sorry for Corbin, almost, because I could bet my money that he was royally fu*ked. Corbin looked shocked and embarrassed, but stubbornness goes a long way, they say, and he was just about to raise his voice again when Damien and the twins came marching into the dining room. “What the hell is going on?” Damien bellowed in his royal alpha voice. Everyone bowed in respect. Corbin started to plead and talk nonsense, but I had had enough and informed Damien about everything that had happened. “Decide the time and place for the fight, Mason.” Damien demanded. “2 hours from now, at the fighting pit.” Mason answered. “Until then, alpha Corbin you are still under house arrest. Either follow Tristan and Theo back to your room, or I will personally drag you to the dungeon. What will it be?” Corbin tried to maintain his dignity, but you could see his facade starting to crack. “I´ll wait in my room until it's time.” Corbin said and turned around to leave, the twins following him close behind. As the doors closed behind them, Damien turned around with a questioning expression. “How the hell did this happen?” He asked. Me and Mason looked at each other, then back at Damien. Both answered at the same time, "No idea." Damien just glared at us. "But the positive aspect to this mess is that Mason at least got us some Friday night entertainment." I chortled. *** Zane I saw Lily's hurt expression when I spotted the impertinent she-wolf. Damn, I got angry. It took everything in me to hold back my lycan. He didn't care that it was a woman, all he cared about was that our mate was hurt. Lily had been devalued all her life, it would take time to build her self-esteem back up. I was afraid that if someone from my past showed up and acted catty, would Lily be able to handle it? I would defend her for all I was worth, but what if that wasn´t good enough? I needed to be honest about my past and have faith that we could get through it. But just the thought made me break out in a cold sweat. I had run across countless battlefields without fear, but this conversation made me nauseous with nervousness. I couldn't change my past. I regretted all my bad choices, all the other women that came before, but I intended to spend the rest of eternity making it up to her if she let me. I would prove to her that she had no flaws, no shame from her past to carry. Because the shame was never hers to begin with. She was pure perfection and the only woman I would ever want, ever need. I took her hand in mine as we walked back to the packhouse alongside Ronan. “I want that insolent woman kept in the dungeon until we leave your pack, Ronan. It isn´t negotiable.” Ronan looked deep in thought before he answered. “I fully understand. To be honest, she has been a nuisance for quite some time. Creating drama wherever she goes. I've let her misbehave for far too long. She will have to sit in the dungeon and be released after you leave with the threat of exclusion from the pack if her behavior does not change,” Ronan vowed. Back at the packhouse, Lily was unusually quiet. We followed Ronan to his office where his mate, Cora, was already waiting. "I heard what happened! It's time you did something about that horrible woman, Ronan!” She scolded. Ronan gave her a crooked smile and stroked her cheek lovingly. “It´s already handled, darling. She will spend a couple of nights in the dungeon and will receive a warning as well.” Cora looked pleased at her mate’s answer. “Cora, my love, we have some important things to discuss that will take some time. How about we order some food up to my office for us and our guest, hmm?” Cora looked between us, questioningly. “Of course, my alpha. I will arrange it immediately.” Cora answered. A half-hour later, we ate and talked about the whole vampire problem. Ronan and Cora both agreed that the risk that it was Nolan who was behind the break-in in our apartment was high. However, Ronan was of the opinion that, despite what had happened in the Bloodmoon pack, it should be where we go next. Because the security was at the moment heightened by my Lycan warriors and Damien and the others are there as protection as well. I must say that I agreed with him. Unfortunately, my wildflower looked terrified just by the mere thought of going back there. I hated that I couldn't conjure away all the pain she endured from those horrible wolves. I pulled her onto my lap, stroking her hair lovingly, yet she still felt unusually quiet, withdrawn. "Wildflower, I would never let anyone hurt you. You know that, right?" "I know, but you won't always be there to protect me, Zane. I have to learn how to stand on my own two feet." I growled at that. Fu*k standing on her own when I could carry her! She just looked at me dejectedly. Some of the glow in her eyes was extinguished. Sh*t, what is going on in that head of hers? "I'm tired Zane. Can we decide if we're going to Blood moon tomorrow? Luna Cora, you don´t happen to have a library or a book I can borrow? I really miss getting lost in a good book.” Why did she need a book when she could get lost in me?! What the hell was going on? "Absolutely, Lily. Come with me and I'll show you." Cora replied with a smile. Lily tried to get up to follow her to the library, but I refused. Instead I lifted her up into my arms. "We will discuss this further tomorrow and if you're tired, I'll carry you, wildflower." She didn't answer me but leaned back against my chest as I followed Cora through the corridors down to the library. What were goddamn books supposed to be good for anyway? Fu*king hell, no I´m jealous of a goddamn chopped down tree with silly words on it! The fu*k!
