Chapter 50

Lily To say I was shocked was an understatement. "Is this a dream?" I asked hesitantly. She gave me a gentle look before settling down gracefully next to me. “Yes and no. You are currently lying in bed in the cabin, dozing off in a deep sleep while your body heals and changes. So yes, this is a dream, but that doesn’t make it any less real. I have visited you in your deep slumber to give what little information I am allowed to give you.” “What do you mean by; while my body changes?” I asked, dumbfounded. I haven’t heard of werewolves going through any changes when they mate and mark each other. “You’re more than just an Alpha werewolf, Lily. You’re a direct descendant of a Lycan who didn’t pass on his Lycan genes until you came along. Fate can be tricky that way. Some of his strength is in you, for which we should be grateful, because otherwise you wouldn’t have survived the trials you were forced to go through. But a large part of his Lycan genes lies latent. They need to be released, for your future and that of many others.” Her answer only created more confusion and more questions popped into my head.“So if I'm understanding this correctly, Zane bit me so hard for my Lycan genes to activate? How did he know he needed to do that?” The idea that Zane knew things about me that I myself didn’t know, without telling me, didn’t sit well. "I'm sorry it turned out this way, Lily. I hope you can forgive me and understand that I did it for your own good. Even if I ruined something that should be a highlight in a wolf's life. I found out this information at the last minute and just made it to Cassian in time before Zane marked you.” Her voice rang with honesty and her eyes begged for understanding. A goddess begging me for anything was laughable though. Nevertheless, I believed in her sincerity. "I'm not mad at you. I'm shocked and confused. But not angry. Why are my Lycan genes something that affects my future and that of others?” I asked, clearly not getting it. “Your grandfather kept his secrets well, Lily. It's up to you to find out what they contain. You will step into a society that has lost its way. It won't be easy, but with your legacy from your grandfather, you have the opportunity to unite people, make soulmates something to be cherished and begin to put away prejudices and hunger for power." I wanted to know more details. Who was my grandfather? How can someone like me influence others? The task felt overwhelming. It was only a few weeks ago that I was the scapegoat of the pack, and now I was supposed to have some higher purpose for my existence? I was brought back to the present when I felt Selene's hand close over my own. She gave it a reassuring squeeze while looking at me with her kind eyes. "Don't be afraid, child. You have strength and a heart that holds so much warmth. Together with your Lycan prince, you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to. Believe in each other and the love you two have.” “Why can't you just tell me what's in my future so I can figure out the steps I need to take to get there?” "Fate is fickle. Fate is not determined but is also governed by one's own will. Your destiny can still change, depending on the choices you make and the choices of others.” "But how do I know where to start? How do I even find out who my grandfather really was when he's dead and there's no one he confided in?” "I cannot by divine law tell you all the details. You must unravel your own destiny. But let me throw you some crumbs. There's a man you know who may know more than he's letting on and if I were you, I would find a library with some history books.” A library? What on earth… *** Zane I jolted awake, ready to fight, when a hand shook my shoulder. Damien took a few quick steps backwards while holding his hands up. “Easy, little brother. It´s just me.” Sh*t, I almost punched my own brother. I still felt on edge even though Damien had been guarding me and Lily so I could get a few hours’ sleep. I rubbed my eyes as I oriented myself and as the reality dawned on me I couldn´t hold back a dissatisfied groan. It had been over 2 days since Lily fell asleep and 2 days since Damien arrived with the royal physician at the cabin. After Lily was examined, Damien took us back to the capital for better protection. Being back in the royal palace sucked. Thank fu*k we arrived during the night and were able to sneak in unseen through a hidden back door. But I knew that peace wouldn't last forever. Sooner or later the news would get out. "I'm sorry I had to wake you, but our father requires my presence. I'd better go, so we don't draw unnecessary attention to ourselves.” “Ugh, what does our wonderful father want with you now?” “Don´t know, don´t care.” Damien said casually as he shrugged his shoulders. “See you later then.” I answered as Damien headed for the door. "I'll see you later. And by the way, I've asked an omega to come up with some food that I expect you to eat.” He told me with a pointed look. “If you say so, mother hen.” He stopped in his tracks to look at me. "Seriously Zane. You need to keep your strength up for Lily's sake.” “Yeah, Yeah, fine, whatever...” Damien just rolled his eyes at me before leaving me alone with my wildflower. The historian, Miles, said that a few similar cases were documented. He believed that our bite activated her Lycan genes. The answer calmed me somewhat, but I was still anxious for her to wake up. I wanted to see with my own eyes that she didn't hate us after what happened. Just the thought of her doing that was almost too much to bear. Her appearance had changed somewhat since she fell asleep. Her hair was shinier and her body, which previously suffered from malnutrition and poisoning, had now magically filled out in all the right places. The bruises and blemishes were gone, and she now had a healthy glow. What pleased me the most was to discover that the fu*ker, Nolan's, bite mark had magically disappeared. Thank fu*k! I lay down and pulled her into my arms, enjoying her lovely scent. Tiredness rolled over me, but I didn´t want to risk falling asleep when Lily was in this state without Damien there to protect us, I was just going to close my eyes for a little while… Sh*t I fell asleep. Without opening my eyes, I reached out to pull Lily closer, only to discover an empty bed. I couldn´t have thrown myself out of bed faster even if someone had put my ass on fire. My gaze caught an Omega who was making her way into the room with a food cart. She stopped abruptly when she saw me ready in a fighting stance. "Where the hell is she?" I roared at her, feeling Cassian wanting to take over to tear down the entire palace until we found our mate. The girl quickly turned around and ran out screaming. I growled in anger before starting to take off after her. But just as I was about to run out the door, I heard the bathroom door open. "My Goddess, Zane. What are you doing scaring the poor girl like that? She was just doing her job." My head snapped around and was met by innocent light blue eyes. “Lily.” “Yeah, that´s me.” She said with her angelic voice while looking at me like I had completely lost my mind. I took a few quick steps towards her before pulling her into my arms, holding her as close as possible as I kissed her hair. “I'm so, so sorry, wildflower. I didn't know he would bite you like that, I swear.” "It's okay, Zane. It was necessary.” "You don't hate me?" "I could never hate you. I love you way too much for that. I'm not mad at Cassian either, for that matter.” She confessed while leaning back, looking at me with an honest expression that conveyed so much love and devotion that it almost brought me to my knees. I didn´t deserve this woman, but I sure as hell intended to do everything in my power to deserve her from this day going forward. I bent down and leaned my forehead against hers as I felt my heartbeat slowly calm down. "I woke up to find you gone. You really scared me there, wildflower.” I whispered as I nuzzled her. Her hands stroked my bare back slowly as she looked up at me. “Sorry, I really needed to go to the bathroom and you were sleeping so soundly I didn't want to disturb you.” “You could never disturb me, wildflower.” I assured her, earning me a sweet smile. I wrapped my hands in her hair and was just about to make sure that we both lost ourselves in a kiss when we were interrupted by loud voices outside. Lily squealed and hid behind me. I let out a sigh, bracing myself for what was to come. So it begins...
