Chapter 2

1160 Words
Zane Finally, a goddamn break in this case. We have spent over 3 months trying to find an opening, a clue, anything that could lead us closer to solving the case. All we knew so far was that there was a rumor that she-wolves were being sold on the black market. But we didn't know by whom, where, when or if it even has anything to do with these disappearances. However, we examined the autopsy report that was done on the three diseased girls and everything indicated that we were dealing with women trafficking. They had been exposed to physical and se*ual violence, which ultimately led to death by strangulation and silver poisoning. Just the thought of what those poor, innocent she-wolves had endured made bile rise in the back of my throat. “This girl, Lily, does she have any family? We need to know everything! Family, friends, if she has enemies? We need to interrogate everyone in the pack". I began to elaborate but was interrupted by Lucien, who waved his hand in an arrogant manor and just had to point out;"We can’t just go and interrogate her pack Zane, then we'll blow our cover. We'll have to send someone else to do the job, someone we trust." He said in a deadpan voice. "Damn Luci, we're 2 hours from the location of the latest crime scene. Isn't it worth dropping the cover to finally get to the bottom of this mess? Damien and the twins are in Rio, probably partying like there´s no tomorrow. It will take at least 2 days before they´re in place" I ran my hands through my hair again in pure frustration. Damn it, I won't have any hair left when this sh*tshow is over! Lucien looked at me suspiciously. Like mushrooms are growing out of my ears or some stupid sh*t... “What!?” I roared. "Well, we came to New York to show ourselves among the scum of our world. We know for a fact that we can find everything from dukes sitting in the Lycan council to wealthy werewolves, wizards and vampires who move on the fringes of what is considered morally correct. But we still don't have all the names, or any evidence. We have worked for 3 months to build up our reputation as morally corrupt to be able to enter their world without raising suspicion. We can't risk it by you losing your head! What is up with you today anyway? Usually, you´re always so levelheaded." What was wrong with me today, really? Hell, if I knew. But for the first time in a long time, it felt like a flame had been awakened deep inside my dark soul. I didn't know why, but my whole body screamed for me to work faster and find the fu*ers behind this. If there was one thing Lucien had taught me over the years we had spent by each other's side, it was to trust my instincts. But in order to be at the top of my game, I must calm down. I knew that. "You're right, I need to get my head in the game. I`ll call Damien and demand he come over to help”. Lucien just nodded, seemingly deep in thought. "Fine, I'll call and get my private jet ready. Then they should be here faster than if they fly on a scheduled flight. I'll send the details over to Damien." I went to pick up my phone, which lay on the glass coffee table behind me, and scrolled up Damien's number. My brother was 13 years older than me. But despite his 125 years, he was still playful, loving everything that life has to offer. He always drives some new car, has a woman in every city and takes nothing too seriously. Sometimes I felt envious of his way of life, but reminded myself that he, too, could feel the weight of expectations and demands on his shoulders that came from being the heir to the throne and I was glad he never had to experience my past. I never talked to him about what happened. I guess he, along with everyone else, thought I was living my life to the fullest. A new woman every night, sometimes several, and then just got tired of it. The only one who knew was Lucien. He was the one who helped me pick up the pieces afterwards. "Hello little brother! What have I done to deserve the honor of a call from you?" In the background of Damien's cheerful voice, I could hear music and women's laughter. It gave me a dark feeling that began to bubble deep in my soul. Especially when I looked around my own cold apartment. Designed in a modern minimalistic open plan style, completely devoid of any personal items. It contained no joy, no life, which was only proof of my own cold, lonely, existence. I quickly closed the door to all my personal feelings, all that had been lost, and instead focused on the present. "You need to come home. There have been more disappearances and we have a lead that needs to be followed. As second in line to the throne, you need to act as an emissary in this." I could hear him groan on the other end. Nevertheless, at the end of the day Damien knew what was important and what needed to be done. "Lucien has sent over the details. His private jet is picking you all up. A folder with where you're going, about the case and those who are to be questioned will be in there. So shut down the party, sober up and get your ass to new york, pronto." I informed him with a deadpan voice, to make him understand that I was serious and wanted them to appear with immediate effect. “Calm down Zane. I would never let anyone suffer because I'm going to enjoy what life has to offer, you know that, right?” His voice immediately went from cheerful to deadly serious. “I know Brother.” I sighed, regretting that I sounded so harsh when I knew he would always stand up for those who need help. The differences between our life choices have caused me to let us grow apart. When all this is over, maybe it’s time to mend the crack. “We will be there. I´ll call you when we land” As we ended the call, Lucien was walking towards me with my black leather jacket in his hand. "Time to go Z, we have a job to do". As we leave the apartment, all I could think was that I hoped we got a ticket to the underworld tonight. I refused to have earned a reputation as a bad boy without a conscience, who loves a good fight and a wild night out in vain.
