Lyra
The day before....
I woke up choking.
My hands flew to my throat, clawing at nothing as I gasped for air. For one horrible moment, I was dying all over again. I could almost feel the cold blade kissing my skin before it bit deep, the warmth of my blood spilling down my neck as my body crumpled to the floor and my killer's shadow watched.
My eyes snapped open.
The morning light poured through the curtains, so f*****g cheerful, so much in contrast with what just happened. I stared at the ceiling, sucking in air until my lungs stopped burning.
I sat up in my bed, wondering where I was. The walls, the ceiling and the pink curtains that my mother had bought because she said they made the room brighter told me I was in my room.
I was home and alive, again.
I pressed a trembling hand against my throat. No wound. No blood. Nothing but smooth, unmarked skin. Then I reached for the glass of water on my nightstand. My hand shook so badly I nearly dropped it. The cool liquid slid down my throat, and I closed my eyes, letting myself breathe.
You're not dead yet, I reminded myself. You're not dead yet.
But I had been. Twice. And the Moon Goddess had brought me back both times like I was her favorite toy to break and reassemble.
I closed my eyes, and the memories came rushing back.
My first life had been Darian.
I had loved him like an i***t, trusted him with everything, and believed every lie he fed me. I gave him my heart, my body, and pictures I should never have sent. By the time I realized what he'd done, I'd already lost everything.
I still remembered the blood between my thighs. My hands pressed against my stomach. The sound of my own screams as I begged for my baby to stay.
My second life had been Silas.
I had thought choosing him would save me from Darian. Instead, I watched my family die because of a fight over the throne, and I learned exactly how little I meant to the man I'd hoped would protect me.
Then someone had come for me, and the last thing I saw before the darkness took me was a single word carved across my killer's chest.
SIN.
Now here I was, alive for the third time. But third time's the charm, right? Or whatever the f**k they say.
I looked up at the ceiling, my eyes burning with tears I refused to shed. Did the Moon Goddess find my suffering amusing?
"f**k you," I whispered to the empty room. "f**k you and your cruel sense of humor. If you wanted me dead so badly, you should have let me stay dead for f**k's sake."
I pushed myself out of bed. I had a plan this time. A plan that didn't involve trusting anyone with my heart or my life. A plan to stay alive and take hold of my fate.
That meant finding the person with the SIN tattoo and making everyone who played a part in my deaths pay.”
And I'd start by taking the one thing that would help me do just that, the power to came with Silas Noctis's crown.
In a few minutes, Maya was going to text about a party. In my first life, I'd stayed home, busy taking pictures of myself for Darian, desperate for his approval but not this time.
I reached for the black dress my mother had bought for me last week. She'd said it was for my coming of age party. I had thought it was too revealing but it was perfect for my purpose. I went into the bathroom to begin my change.
My mission tonight was to get close to Silas. The man who would one day take the throne from his older brother, the Crown Prince.
And I knew exactly how to get him to listen to me.
I studied my reflection as I finished my makeup. The dress hugged my body, dipping low in the front and back, with a slit that revealed a little of my thigh whenever I walked. My hair fell in loose waves over my shoulders, while smoky eye makeup completed the look.
My phone buzzed on the nightstand and I grabbed it, reading the name on the screen.
Darian.
My stomach twisted with pure disgust. I already knew what he was going to say. I'd read these words twice before.
Darian: Send me a picture. I need to see what I'm missing before I accept you as my mate.
I stared at the words. I can't believe I had once blushed at that message and had actually done it. I had sent it to him and he'd shown it to everyone in school. I'd been a fool. A stupid, trusting, desperate fool.
I threw the phone on the table. I'd send him what he wanted, alright. But definitely not a picture of me.
But it buzzed again.
Maya: Hey babe! Party at the club tonight. You should come. Everyone's gonna be there.
I read the message, and quickly sent a reply.
Me: I'll be there soon.
---
I climbed out of my bedroom window just after eight.
My parents would have lost their minds if they knew where I was going. Mama still treated me like I was twelve and my father wasn't much better, his precious omega daughter who was too weak to shift. They'd protected me from everything except the things that actually mattered.
I landed on the grass in a not so graceful manner. For once, their overprotectiveness was useful. Nobody expected the little omega who couldn't shift to sneak out of her window and go to a party.
I took a taxi to the club which was packed by the time I got there. It was filled with the kids of the pack's elite with too much money and not enough sense. The bass music thumped through the walls and vibrated in my chest.
I flashed my card at the bouncer by the door and walked in confidently.
The dress did exactly what I needed it to do. By the time Silas Noctis noticed me, he wouldn't be looking at some weak omega girl. He'd be looking at someone worth paying attention to. That was the whole point.
This was the beginning of the Lyra Hale who took charge of her fate and if the Moon Goddess wanted a show, I'd give her one worth watching.
