Nina paced her small office, her mind racing as she replayed her past with Alex. The weight of Derek's threats weighed heavily on her, and she was forced to act.
She knew she couldn't help herself, but she was also afraid of the consequences.
The door opens and Jake from IT walks in looking pale.
"Nina! — We have a big problem.
"What is that?" She asked with a wavering heart.
"It's about a data breach," he said in a low voice. We found some malicious code on the system. It's been there for weeks."
"You think this is an inside job?" She asked with a knot in her stomach.
We are investigating, but the timing is questionable. Whoever did this knew exactly what they were after.
"Let Alex know as soon as possible."
"Right. Let's find it." Nina said as she left the office.
As they walked through the busy office, Nina's mind was blown by the possibilities. Is Derek really behind this story? And what will Alex do if he finds out that she hid Derek's threats?
They found Alex in a conference room surrounded by senior executives. The mood was tense, and whispers of worry and confusion echoed.
"Alex!" Nina called out as they entered. The room fell silent, and all eyes turned to her.
"What's going on?" he asked with a furrowed brow.
"Jake found a flaw in the system," she said. She tried to keep her voice steady.
"It's been there for a few weeks. - We think it's an inside job.
A murmur of disbelief rippled through the room.
"Are you serious?" One of the managers, Mark, intervened.
"How did this happen?" "I don't know yet, but we have to do it soon," Jake replied, his energy very strong.
"If anyone is paying attention to us, we need to get our information out before it's too late."
Alex nodded, his expression serious.
"We've got this covered. Jake, can you run a full system audit? Identify the source?"
"It's up," Jake said, writing a note on the phone.
Everyone, I want you to get all the information about the latest news. We can see a pattern.
"Do you think anyone in this back room can?" the other leader asked, looking puzzled. "Don't jump to conclusions," Alex replied. "But we can't rule anything out. Trust is weak right now."
Nina felt a chill down her spine. If Derek had a chance, he could have one.
As the team disperses, Alex turns to Nina and examines her eyes.
"Are you sure about this?"
"I know it's wrong, but I think it might have something to do with my husband," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Really?" Alex's demeanor changed to worry.
"What does he have to do with this?" "He threatened me. He knows about us and says he can destroy everything.
Alex's jaw clenched.
“Nina, you have to tell me, this changes everything.”
"I know, but I didn't want to drag you into my closet," she said, her voice shaking. — I thought I could handle it.
"You can't do it alone," he replied firmly.
"We have to do this together. I won't let it come between us." At that moment, the office phone rang, interrupting their intense conversation. Nina picked up the phone.
"Nina is talking."
"Nina, this is Jake. You should go back to IT. We found something.”
"On my way," he replied, looking at Alex. "They found something. I have to go."
"Let me go with you," he said with a look on his face.
"No, I have a better job. You have a meeting," he insisted, not wanting to cause more trouble.
"Be ... careful, okay?" Alex stared hard and for a moment the world around them faded away.
"I will," he promised, his heart sinking. Panic in his stomach as he walked to the IT office. What did Jake find? Is there a sign of Derek's involvement?
She walked out the door to find Jake hunched over a computer surrounded by a bunch of cables and monitors.
"Nina, look at this," he said, pointing to the page. We traced the malware to an IP address, but it was hidden.
"It leads to a server accessed from different places, including our house."
"Can you guess who's going to join us?" he asked, leaning closer.
"I'm working, but it's hard. Whoever organized this knew what they were doing. It took hours to explain.
Just then the door opened and Derek walked in with a simple smile on his face.
“What's going on here? "Looks like you've all seen a ghost." Nina's stomach dropped.
"What are you doing here?" She tried hard to keep her voice steady.
“Oh, I just got in. I heard about a security issue, I thought I'd stretch," he said, leaning against the door frame, his expression calm.
"Give me a hand?" Jake shot back, disbelieving.
"You don't work with IT. We have no business here."
"Is this a way to treat a former employee?" Derek's smile faded, replaced by a colder expression.
"I want to help. However, I don't want anything bad to happen to this place... or to you, Nina."
Nina felt her heart skip a beat as she looked at Jake, whose lips were visible.
"We don't need your help," she said, her voice louder than she'd ever heard.
Derek stepped forward and met her gaze.
"Are you sure about that? I have some information to help."
"I doubt it," Nina replied, crossing her arms. "You're not welcome here. Go."
He laughed, but there was an edge to it.
"You think you're going to throw me out? I'm still in a relationship, Nina. A relationship that's going to pay off."
"Get out," Jake said in a low, menacing voice. "You don't want to be here." Derek's face darkened.
"It's not over yet," he said with a mischievous glint in his eyes. He turned and walked out, leaving a great silence behind him.
Nina felt the adrenaline rush through her.
"He can't be serious," he said, shaking his head. He is trying to scare us."
"He's bad," Jake said loudly. - We must be careful.
“I know. But what if he's still in a relationship?", Nina asked, as anxiety hit her.
Jake leaned back in his seat as he listened.
"If it is him, evidence must be collected quickly. "We can't let him screw everything up."
"True," Nina agreed with strength beyond her years.
"Let's see what we can find." At that moment, her phone rang again. A message from Alex: Let's talk.
At this time she felt sad. What happened she quickly looked at Jake.
"I have to go. Alex needs me."
"Be careful," he said with a sad look on his face.
She quickly ran out of the room and promised,
"I will do it." As she walked back into the meeting room, her mind was a whirlwind of thoughts. What new problems have arisen?
Her pace picked up, and her heart began to pound as she approached the door.
He pushed it and the room became very windy. Alex stood in the front, surrounded by some of the main members of the group.
He said in a low voice: Nina.
"I'm glad you're here. We have a problem."
"What is that?" he asked, his stomach churning.
"We just got a call from security. They found someone in the house who shouldn't have been there. They think it might be related to the breakup,” he explained as his eyes met hers.
"Understood?" he asked, panic rising.
They haven't said yet, but they are looking into it.
"We need to secure the office and ensure everyone's safety," Alex said quickly.
"Do we know where he is?" he asked with a wavering heart.
"Not yet, but we're working on it. You need to stay close and help organize the team.
As he shook his head, a loud bang echoed through the hall, followed by a scream. Nina's heart stopped.
"What is that?"
"Nobody! I'll go with you," he pleaded, following her.
They hurried down the tunnel where the noise came from. As they approached the corner, they saw a group of workers shaking, their expressions a mixture of fear and confusion.
"What happened?" Alex asked. "I think someone broke into the server room!" One of the workers shouted with wide eyes. Nina held her breath.
They ran to the door, and Alex opened it to find a strange figure inside. Cables are scattered and computers are malfunctioning. It was obvious that someone had tampered with it.
