Chapter 6: “The Bond That Wasn't There”

We didn’t stop running until the ruins were gone. Kael led me through the trees for an hour. The map from the library was in my hand. The red circle on the mountain seemed to pulse under my thumb. “The chamber is close,” he said, not even breathing hard. “We’ll make it before dawn.” I nodded. My arms were shaking from holding the book. The one that glowed when I said “Stop.” “You’re quiet,” Kael said. “I used power,” I whispered. “Real power. And I didn’t mean to.” Kael slowed and looked at me. “That’s how it starts. Lunas don’t learn control. They remember it.” “Remember?” “Your bloodline is old,” he said. “Older than Blackstone. Older than Darius. The book responded to you because it knows you.” I looked down at the white leather. It was cold now. Normal. The mark on my neck cooled too. The burning was gone. We reached the base of the mountain just as the sky turned gray. A cave mouth hid behind vines. Kael pulled them back. “This is it. The Underground Chamber.” Stone steps led down. Dark. I hesitated. Kael didn’t push. “We can turn back. But if Darius finds this place first…” “No,” I said. “I’m going in.” He nodded. He lit a torch. Silver flame. Moonfire again. We went down. The air got colder with every step. The walls were carved with the same vine-and-moon symbol. Over and over. At the bottom was a door. Stone. No handle. Just a circle in the center. Kael stepped back. “Your turn.” I walked to it. The mark on my neck flared. Hot. I pressed my palm to the circle. The stone slid open without a sound. Inside was a tomb. Not a body. A pedestal. And on it, a staff. Moonstone. Silver. Carved with vines. It hummed. “The First Luna’s staff,” Kael said softly. I reached for it. “Wait,” Kael said. I stopped. “Why?” “Because if you’re not her, it will burn you,” he said. “If you are…” I took a breath. Then I picked it up. It was light. Warm. Like it fit my hand. No burning. No pain. Just… right. Kael exhaled. Like he’d been holding his breath. “You are her.” The staff pulsed once. The walls lit up. Carvings I hadn’t seen before. Stories. A woman with a white wolf. A rejection. A forest. A rogue. My story. Five hundred years ago. “It’s a record,” I said. “Of every Luna.” Kael nodded. “And a warning.” He pointed. The last carving. A wolf with a crown. And a broken chain. _“When the false bond breaks, the Luna will choose. Or be destroyed.”_ “False bond,” I repeated. “Marcus.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “Yes.” I gripped the staff tighter. “He can’t force me.” “No one can,” Kael said. “Not if you don’t give it.” The staff pulsed again. And a voice. Not out loud. In my head. _“You are the last, Ella Moore. Will you choose?”_ I stumbled. Kael caught my arm. “What is it?” he asked fast. “The first Luna,” I said. “She’s… speaking to me.” Kael’s eyes went wide. “What does she say?” _“Will you choose?”_ the voice repeated. I looked at Kael. Then I closed my eyes. I saw Marcus. The ball. The word: _Rejected_. I saw my father. Silent. I saw Kael. Hand out. No demands. “I choose,” I said out loud. “I choose me.” The staff flared. Silver light filled the chamber. The voice was gone. When I opened my eyes, the carvings were dark again. Normal. But the staff in my hand was still warm. Kael let go of my arm slowly. “What did you choose?” “Myself,” I said. “Not Marcus. Not Blackstone. Me.” He nodded once. Like that was the only answer that mattered. “Then we need to leave,” he said. “Now. That light—” A sound from above. Boots. On stone. “Darius,” Kael said. “He followed the light.” Footsteps. Many. We ran. Up the steps. Out of the cave. Dawn was breaking. At the tree line stood twenty wolves. Black fur. Blackstone Pack. And in front, Darius. Marcus’s father. Tall. Cold eyes. He saw me. Saw the staff. His face went still. “So it’s true. A Luna.” I stepped forward. Kael stayed beside me. “Darius,” I said. My voice didn’t shake. “I’m not going back with you.” Darius’s eyes narrowed. “You’re a child playing with power you don’t understand.” “I understand enough,” I said. “You rejected me when you rejected Marcus’s choice. You don’t get a second one.” He laughed. Once. No humor. “Take her.” The wolves moved. Kael shifted. Black wolf. He put himself between me and them. “Run, Ella,” he growled. I didn’t. I raised the staff. “Stop.” The word came out with silver light. Every wolf froze. Mid-step. Darius’s eyes widened. “Command…” “Yes,” I said. “And I command you to leave.” The wolves didn’t move. They couldn’t. Darius snarled. “You can’t hold them all, girl.” “Watch me,” I said. Sweat broke out on my forehead. My knees shook. Holding twenty wolves was heavy. Kael shifted back. He stood beside me. “Ella. Don’t kill yourself to prove a point.” I gritted my teeth. “I’m not…” The staff flickered. One wolf broke free. Then another. Darius smiled. “Too weak.” Fear hit me. Cold. Then a voice. Behind me. “Ella.” Marcus. He stood at the edge of the trees. Alone. No guards. “Dad, stop,” he said. “She’s not a threat.” Darius didn’t look at him. “She’s a weapon. And she’s mine.” “No,” Marcus said. He stepped forward. “She’s not yours. She’s not mine. She’s free.” Darius turned on him. “You’re defying me?” “I’m choosing,” Marcus said. He looked at me. “Like she did.” The wolves still frozen looked between them. I met Marcus’s eyes. I didn’t feel the bond. Not anymore. It was gone. Broken. “Marcus,” I said. “You don’t have to do this.” “I know,” he said. “But I want to.” The staff in my hand steadied. “Everyone,” I said. My voice carried. “Leave. Now.” The command hit again. Stronger this time. The wolves turned. As one. And ran. Darius stood alone for a second. Furious. Then he followed them. Silence. Marcus didn’t come closer. “You’re okay?” “Yes,” I said. He nodded. “Good.” Then he turned to go. “Marcus,” I called. He stopped. Didn’t turn. “Thank you,” I said. “For choosing.” He didn’t answer. He just walked away. Kael put a hand on my shoulder. Not holding. Just there. “You did it,” he said quietly. I looked down at the staff. At my hands. They weren’t shaking anymore. “I chose,” I said. And for the first time since the Moonlight Ball, I felt free.
