The Sacrificial Lamb

"Get up," Barrett’s voice dropped into a sharp, clinical tone, stripped of all emotion. He didn't even look down at her. He was too busy smoothing the lapels of his suit jacket, his touch lingering affectionately on Cynthia’s waist. "You’ve made enough of a scene in my office, Talia. Your pathetic tears won't undo your treason." Talia pushed her bruised hands against the floorboards, trying desperately to force her weak muscles to respond. Her body felt impossibly heavy, drained of the vital life-force her inner wolf had once provided. Before she could even scramble to her knees, the heavy oak doors of the study groaned open once more. Heavy, measured footsteps echoed into the room. Talia lifted her tear-stained face, her blurred vision adjusting to the imposing figure standing in the doorway. It was her father, Beta Thomas Vance. He was a stern, unyielding man with steel-gray hair and dark eyes that had never once looked at Talia with warmth. Behind him stood two heavy-set pack enforcers, their hands resting ominously on the silver hilt weapons tucked into their tactical belts. Thomas carried a heavy set of dark metal chains over his arm, the cold links clinking softly with every step he took. "Beta Thomas," Barrett addressed him, adjusting his posture into that of an absolute ruler. "It is done. The mate bond has been broken. Your daughter is no longer associated with my line or the future leadership of this pack." Thomas bowed his head respectfully to Barrett, completely stepping over Talia’s outstretched hand as if she were a puddle of dirty water on the rug. "You have done what was necessary for the honor of the Blood Moon Pack, Alpha," Thomas said, his voice flat, devoid of a single drop of parental compassion. "A traitorous, weak female has no place at your side. I apologize that my bloodline produced such a disgraced creature." "Father..." Talia choked out, her dry throat burning as the word tore past her lips. "Father, please... you know I didn't do this. Cynthia lied to Barrett... she set me up..." "Hold your tongue!" Thomas barked, his voice laced with absolute disdain as he finally looked down at her. "Do not speak her name! Cynthia is a dutiful, honorable daughter who has brought pride to our family. You, on the other hand, are a parasite. A wolf less, disgraceful burden who has spent her entire life dragging our name through the mud." Cynthia stepped out from behind Barrett, putting on another grand show of trembling helplessness. "Oh, Father... please don't be too harsh on her. I know she made a terrible mistake, but... but she's still my sister. Is there really no mercy for her?" Thomas’s expression hardened into granite. "Mercy? She traded our border security to rogues, Cynthia. She put our lives at risk. The Moon Goddess herself rejected her by giving her a dead, useless wolf. No, there is no mercy left for her here. In fact, her timing is rather convenient." Barrett frowned slightly, turning his golden-brown eyes toward the Beta. "What do you mean, Thomas?" Thomas stepped deeper into the room, the heavy iron chains swinging from his fist. "An hour ago, a royal raven arrived from the Northern Territories. King Lucian of the Lycan Empire has issued his final demand regarding the border treaty violation from last month." A cold, uncomfortable silence descended upon the room at the mention of that name. Even Barrett, as proud and powerful as he was, perceptibly stiffened. King Lucian. The Supreme Ruler of the Northern Lycan Realm. In the supernatural world, his name was spoken only in hushed, terrified whispers. Unlike standard werewolves, the Lycan bloodline was ancient, giant, and fiercely untamed. Lucian was known as a ruthless, bloodthirsty tyrant who ruled his vast, dark empire with an iron fist—a monster who executed whole packs for minor infractions and whose feral nature was said to be so powerful that no female had ever survived his bed or his court. "What does the Lycan King want?" Barrett asked, his voice tightening. "He demands his tribute," Thomas answered darkly. "The broken treaty required a blood sacrifice from our high-ranking families to seal the peace. The decree explicitly states that the Beta family must surrender their eldest child to the Northern Court as a servant to the royal fortress." Talia’s heart stopped dead in her chest. The eldest child. She was the eldest. She had been born twenty minutes before Cynthia to Thomas’s late first wife. "Wait," Barrett interjected, his eyes darting toward Cynthia. "The decree asks for the Beta's eldest daughter. That means..." "That meant Cynthia," Thomas interrupted smoothly, his dark eyes flashing with a cold, calculated light. "Until thirty minutes ago, Cynthia was my only viable daughter bound for nobility. But I will not send my pure, talented, and beautiful Cynthia to be torn apart by the feral monsters of the North. She is destined to be your Luna, Barrett. She belongs here, on a throne." Thomas turned his chilling gaze directly onto Talia, who was trembling on the floor. "However," Thomas continued, a sinister smile creeping onto his lips, "the royal registry in our pack archives has already been... modified. As far as the Lycan King's court is concerned, Talia is the eldest daughter who holds the blood of the Beta line. And since she is now a rejected, wolf-less traitor who holds zero value to this pack, she will take Cynthia's place as the sacrificial lamb." Talia gasped, horror flooding her veins like ice water. "No... Father, no! You can't do this! King Lucian will kill me!" "That is precisely the point," Thomas said coldly. "Father, please!" Talia begged, scrambling forward on her knees and reaching out to grab the hem of his trousers. "I am your blood! My mother—" "Do not speak of your mother!" Thomas roared, kicking her hand away with enough force to send her sprawling backward onto her side. "Your mother died giving birth to a weak, defective runt! You should have died in that room with her!" Cynthia hid a triumphant smile behind her delicate fingers, leaning her head against Barrett’s shoulder. Barrett looked down at Talia’s pathetic, writhing form, his brow furrowed slightly, but he did not object. To him, getting rid of his rejected mate in a way that satisfied a terrifying Lycan King’s political demand was an ideal, clean solution. It erased his mistake forever. "It is a fitting punishment," Barrett agreed coldly, stepping back to give the enforcers space. "Send her to the Lycans. Let King Lucian deal with her traitors' blood. She won't survive a week in the northern snows." "Enforcers, bind her," Thomas commanded. The two towering guards stepped forward immediately. Talia fought with every ounce of strength remaining in her exhausted, broken frame. She kicked, screamed, and clawed at the polished floorboards, her desperate cries echoing off the high stone walls of Alpha's office. "Let me go! Barrett, please! Sister, have mercy!" she shrieked, her voice cracking into agonized sobs. "Don't send me there! Please, just exile me! Let me go into the woods!" "Shut her up," Thomas ordered ruthlessly. One of the enforcers pinned Talia’s face violently against the hardwood, his massive knee crushing into the small of her back. She choked on her own tears as the other guard grabbed her slender wrists, pulling them roughly behind her back. Clang. Cold, heavy metal snapped around her left wrist. Then the right. The moment the dark iron cuffs made contact with her skin, a sickening, sizzling sound filled the air, accompanied by the horrible smell of burning flesh. "AHHHH!" Talia let out a blood-curdling scream of pure agony. These were not ordinary iron chains. The metal had been heavily laced with dark, refined silver and wolfsbane—a volatile compound designed to violently suppress wolf magic and sear raw flesh. Even though Talia's inner wolf was dormant and broken, her body still carried the basic cellular makeup of a shifter. The poisoned metal instantly burned through her upper layer of skin, causing thick, painful blisters to erupt across her wrists. "Stop! It burns! It burns!" she wept, thrashing beneath the enforcer's heavy knee. Blood and dark fluid began to seep out from beneath the dark metal rings, staining the cuffs and dripping onto the Persian rug. "The Lycan King requested that the tribute arrive in heavy suppression irons," Thomas stated devoid of any remorse, watching his daughter writhe in agony. "We wouldn't want our precious 'traitor' trying to run away on the journey, would we?" The enforcers hauled Talia up by her arms, completely ignoring her agonizing screams as the silver burned deeper into her wrists. Her feet dragged uselessly against the floor as they hoisted her up like a sack of dirty laundry. Her vision blurred, dark spots swimming at the edges of her sight as the intense pain and shock began to overwhelm her senses. They dragged her out of Alpha’s grand office, down the long, luxurious carpeted hallways of the pack house, and out into the biting cold of the evening air. Pack members had gathered in the courtyard, alerted by the commotion. Dozens of familiar faces—people Talia had grown up with, people she had cooked for and helped during festivals—stood in silence. None of them stepped forward to help her. They looked at her bleeding wrists and her tear-stained face with cold indifference, whispering vicious rumors under their breath about the "traitorous, wolfless parasite" who had tried to betray their Alpha. Talia was thrown violently into the back of a dark, windowless transport van. Her head cracked sharply against the metal floorboards, sending a fresh wave of blinding pain through her skull. Before the heavy double doors slammed shut, blocking out the last rays of the setting sun, she caught a final glimpse of her father standing on the steps of the pack mansion. He looked at her with pure coldness, devoid of a single regret. CRASH. The doors locked from the outside, plunging Talia into total, absolute darkness. The engine roared to life, and the vehicle lurched forward, carrying her away from the only home she had ever known. Bound in burning, poisoned silver, rejected by her mate, and disowned by her family, Talia curled onto her side in the dark interior of the van. She closed her eyes, waiting for the sweet relief of death to finally take her away.
