Disappointment…
That is what I felt the next day when I woke as well as the entire weekend. To me nothing is worse than being sick on a weekend. I was not able to enjoy my weekend in its entirety. I did receive my paycheck, which allowed me to do some light shopping and pay a portion of my bills. I slept a lot as well as took medication. I figured I would be well enough to work Monday morning and found myself sluggish.
I wanted to be home in my bed of course but I could not afford to miss days. I was a new employee and already missed half a day the week prior when I fainted. Granted I still got most of my work done I always wanted to excel above other workers. I was clearly over doing it if a CEO was impressed by my test before meeting me in person. I took each moment as it came trying not to overwhelm myself to the point of pure exhaustion. I was looking forward to lunch the most. I wanted to take the time to nap.
When lunch made her appearance after much anticipation I sighed in relief. I rounded my desk to turn the light off and retreated under my desk. To some people it was weird, but I had no issue catching a cat nap wherever it presented itself. Sleep was something I found myself longing for often these days. I balled up under the desk almost immediately falling asleep.
Why is everything moving?
Earthquake!
My eyes shot open sleep still clouding them I blinked again to try and clear my vision. Where are my glasses? I thought moving my hands around only finding a warm chest.
“Why are you asleep under your desk?”, I could not quite make out his facial expressions without my glasses.
“My glasses”, my voice did not sound like my own.
A moment later my vision was back to normal. I looked up at Jace sad to have my sleep interrupted.
“Is that better?”
“Yes, Thank you”
“So, why are you under the desk”, his hand made its way to my cheek and up to my forehead, “Are you sick again?”
“Yes, but I’m ok to work I swear…”
“You have sick time for things like this”, I looked around noticing we were on the floor but no longer under the desk where I had fallen asleep.
“If I need to use it I will but I am fine”, I sat up missing the warmth his body provided when it was gone, “I can finish the day”.
“You have to take care of yourself”
“I am, mind your business”, I stood from the ground, brushing my clothes off, and stretching.
He launched instead of getting offended. Approaching me he pulled me out of my office.
“Get off me Jace”, I pushed his hands off, “Let me finish the day and I will take a sick day”.
“Fine I will let you stay because you haven’t showed any signs of fatigue but the moment, I see you start slipping, You will be going home”, he walked up to me.
“Quit your blabbing I go this”, I replied.
“You have really become the smart mouth huh?
“What can I say?”, I shrugged, I knew he was growing on me and I did not like it, but it was a subconscious decision.
“Well if you want to get better you need to eat well as much as sleep”, he tried to grab me again.
“Jace you said you wouldn’t touch me unless I asked of you”, I dodged his hand.
He frowned a bit, “You are right, I apologize” he walked ahead of me to the door with his hand out expecting me to walk ahead of him, “After you”.
I walked past him to the elevators. I was not hungry, but I remember the importance he stressed on eating last time. I knew he would not let it go. I was in no mood to argue and I knew I would need to eat soon. I had forgotten to eat properly over the weekend. We left the building and a driver pulled a car forward for us instead of Jace driving.
“Why are we using a driver today?”
“My employees have to work to get paid Ryan.” He shifted in his seat to face me better, “He needs a job I provide”.
I nodded my head in understanding.
“Also, I am one of the richest men in history… I have events, to go to and a lot of the times I have to do stuff in transit”.
He took me to a little bistro. I was surprised because it was nothing like my first day where we ate. We were seated in the back. I sat alone as Jace was pulled away by a tiny old lady to talk. I waited for him to return while looking at the menu. After about five minutes I knew what I wanted to eat and patiently waited for Jace to come back so we could order.
“You ready to order”, a small voice interrupted my thoughts.
“Oh my”, I clutched my chest in fear.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you”, the young boy spoke.
I assumed he was the grandson of the woman Jace was talking to. He was too young to be employed. I knew mom and pop shops had different rules.
“Its ok. You seem a bit nervous”, I smiled, “You don’t have to be”.
“Some people are mean”, he whispered.
“Yeah, that’s how the world is unfortunately but if you approach everyone with kindness you’ll limit it”, I patted the seat next to me in an effort to get him to sit next to me, “Some people are just plain mean but there is no need for you to be nervous or scared that wont change how they act”.
He nodded as he sat beside me.
“How do I stay nice? Sometimes people make me hot and angry… I don’t get it”, he sighed.
Wow people really could be cruel to kids? I was no saint and my hands were not free of guilt on a lot of things, but I was never one to take anything out on kids. That is plain rude and disgusting.
“I get it”, I patted his back, “It can be difficult to keep your composure but don’t let someone get the satisfaction of seeing you out of character… OK?”
“I never thought about it like that, I get it”, he smiled big. His confidence level seeming to skyrocket. “Do you still want to order?”
“Yes, we do”, Jace interrupted, “And she is right you know?”.
“Jace stay out of business that’s not yours”, I looked up.
“Right, my bad”, he sat in his seat, cheeks tinted red.
“What’s your name kid?”, I asked.
“Brandon”, he smiled wide.
“Nice to meet you Brandon, I am Ryan”
“Ryan?”
“Yes, and yes, it is a ‘guys’ name”, I rolled my eyes in a playful manor.
“I like it”, he blushed as he spoke to me.
“What is your soup of the day Brandon?”, I inquired.
“Chicken and dumplings”, He responded.
“Ohh, I will have that and a grilled cheese sandwich please”, I gave him my menu once done ordering.
He wrote my order and Jace’s before running off to input the order.
I finished half the grilled cheese and the entire bowl of soup. I ordered another bowl of soup to go. Once the bill came Jace paid and we left. I rested my head on the door to rest my eyes as we headed back to the office.
And you know what? I woke up to a sunrise in a bed that was not mine.
