I woke the next morning to the blaring of an alarm I did not remember setting. I was grateful for it though. I could see past the corners of the curtains it was still dark outside which would allow me a jump on the day. It was Wednesday and I was determined to do a full day’s work and then some. Working was an art and I would treat it as such. I wanted to put my all into everything I did, and this job was no exception. Sure, I had a rough start, but I was ready to turn it around for the better.
Have you ever started a day and knew it was going to be a productive one? The kind of days where you wake up on time, stay on schedule, and plan everything out down to the T? The days where nothing can go wrong because you have made up your mind to not get distracted and carry on no matter what life throws at you? Well, this was going to be one of those days. I had my mind fixed on it and I was going to make sure of it.
I turned off the alarm on the company phone that was currently on the nightstand charging. With one final elongated blink I rubbed my eyes and stood from the warm comfort of the bed. One of the first thing I wanted to purchase for my apartment was a new bed. I could only imagine going home and being comfortable instead of stressed and restless all the time. This job brought me hope and a sliver of happiness.
I walked away from the bed I wanted to stay in forever and entered the bathroom. This bathroom was different then the one in Jace’s room which was a minor setback in my day.
Emerging from the bathroom 20 minutes later I was ready to get to work. I was not sure if we were going into the office today or working from home again, so I set off to find Jace. I first checked his room and office coming up short. The last place I thought he could be was the kitchen, so I dragged my feet and went to check. Walking into the kitchen Jace towered over the stove and I could not believe I had not smelled the food when I first woke up.
I stopped beside him at the stove to see what he was cooking. Pancakes I thought to myself as I looked at the batter start to change in composition into a little flat cake.
“Are we going in today or?”, I trailed off not feeling the need to complete my sentence.
“No, we will be working from here today. I need to show you how to schedule my meetings, visits, and other various task properly according to the days”, I nodded as he finished.
Watching him flip the pancake I assumed all that information would have been in my email on boarding but apparently not.
Once all the food was placed on the table, I grabbed a medium sized pancake, small scoop of eggs, and a piece of bacon. The food was good and once again I was shocked at his ability to cook. I finished the food thinking breakfast just might become my favorite kind of food to eat. Pancakes were underrated and I would not tolerate it any longer; I wanted them daily.
I did not sit at the table -past my last bite of food. I washed my dish and set up in the living room to get to work.
“Come to my office today, I need to show you the scheduling and you will be better equipped there”, Jace walked away after informing me on this decision.
Why would he wait until I had everything set up to tell me? I thought to myself. I am sure he knew of this plan when he decided to teach these things personally so why wait until I was set up and comfortable. The man was inconsiderate and a slight nuisance, I once again entertained my thoughts as I smiled relocating my laptop and various items to his office.
There was just his desk and a coffee table of sorts in the room. I decided on the coffee table to allow us the appropriate space we both needed to work properly. Deciding the chair was better than the couch to work in I settled in and started by answering emails in my inbox. I occasionally asked Jace questions but we had a template email for almost every situation that I was familiarizing myself with.
Generally, I liked working alone. It gave me the security blanket of when I dozed a little or spaced out no one was watching but now with my boss in the same room that was null in void. I was not tired as much as bored. It was a repetitive job s far and once I learned something it was as good as stuck for the most part. Granted I was only three days in and only one was a full day’s work. Working alone gave me peace of mind to not be micromanaged. I worked for a few hours before Jace showed me how he liked his schedule planned out.
It was not hard, but it was slightly meticulous. I was here to personally assist him after all.
“Thank you for calling Grey enterprises this is Ryan how may UI assist you today”, I answered the phone after two rings. Initially I answered as soon as it rung but I found out a lot of people hang up before the second to third ring.
“Ryan? What happened to Lily?”, the voice protruded through the phone and screamed privilege.
“I am sorry sir you would have to speak with her or our HR department… Is there anything I can assist you with?”
“Who are you?”
“As previously stated, my name is Ryan Sir” I rolled my eyes continuing to type out an email, “Is there anything I can assist you with today?”
“Isn’t that a males name? Are you a man?”, He continued.
“Well if that is all sir, I am going to have to let you go”, I stopped my email starting to get annoyed, but I maintained my professional voice. “Please do give us a call back if you have any valid questions, comments or concerns… Thank you so much”
I ended the call with a sigh. I genuinely hated people with a passion.
“What happened?”, Jace’s voice interrupted my thoughts. I honestly forgot he was in the room.
“A man was playing on the line he asked about a lily then continued to judge me but did no task anything about you or the company so I let him go”, I rubbed my eyes ready for a break.
A glance at the clock told me it was lunch time. I put my email on auto reply for lunch as well as my voicemail before making my way out the office to empty mt bladder first. Upon exiting the bathroom, I found Jace propped against the wall adjacent from where I stood.
“Uhm hey”, my brows furrowed as I walked deeper into the hall towards the kitchen with Jace following.
“You can not just hang up on customers Ryan”
“I do not hang up on customers he was playing on the phone”, I turned to look at him but continued walking “I told you this already”.
I sat at the dining table expecting food. I was turning into a spoiled assistant and I was enjoying it. I enjoyed watching Jace cook and his food was delicious. I watched as his back muscled flex when he reached for or to do anything. I had not seen someone this fit in years and it was comforting almost.
I thought back to the conversation with the man on the phone. I did not understand why people were so simple minded. A name is a name it can be universal if one chooses. I hated people who were sexist, racist, or judgmental in general. I loved my name and I would not change it for the world. I enjoyed the shock factor of going on job interviews and they assumed I put female on accident. It was amusing to say the least.
Finally, Jace rounded on me with two plates in hand. I sat up in my chair excited to see what was making my mouth water. His portion was two times my size, but I was not complaining I did not need much food currently. I knew I was not eating as much as I should at my weight and age, but I would get there. We ate our steak bits, rice, and asparagus in silence. I leaned back with a grown knowing I should not have cleaned the entire plate, but it was so good.
I looked across the table to Jace and found him already looking at me. I c****d my head to the left a little in a way to say, ‘what are you looking at?’. I am 99.9% positive I said it in my head, but I might as well have said it aloud because he smiled at me before rounding the table and crouching in front of me.
“You really don’t know do you?”, he smiled up at me.
“Well of course I do”, I answered unsure “Know what?”, I asked after a pause.
He laughed standing walking away from me. I was utterly confused and stood to wash the dishes.
What don’t I know? I pondered as I scrubbed the dishes we made. What was I missing?
I was confused but I knew he was not going to tell me so making my way back to the office I stepped in skeptically. I watched him with every step before sitting back in my chair and getting back to work. I now had the energy I needed to finish the day.
I glanced at him periodically his statement still weighing on my mind as I worked not allowing me to fully focus.
“Just tell me will you”, I was bursting at the seams with curiosity.
My outburst was clearly unwarranted as he looked at me confused.
“What don’t I know?”, I asked.
There it was again, that killer smile. I was always one to appreciate a great smile.
“You really want to know?”
“of course, or I wouldn’t be asking”, I rolled my neck slightly extending my hand.
“Sei sfarzoso”, He leaned over the desk as a deep, smooth, and delectable accent passed his lips with the words.
I scrunched my face as my head snapped back.
“Excuse me, that is not English”, I shook my head “English! Please”
He chuckled before telling me we were done with work for the day. I grabbed my phone to check the time and it was 5 o’clock and I was happy with the progress I made in the day. I plugged in all my equipment before going to the couch to watch tv. I was still wondering what he said so I turned to google translate but I could not remember exactly what he said. He did not say enough for me to know what language it was. I knew it was a Latin originated language by the sound, but I could not figure out which one. Siri sucked and I gave up.
Cuddling into the couch with a fluffy cover my blinks got longer, and it became harder to keep my eyes open. Before I completely went to sleep Jace crouched in front of me, but my ears were clocking out.
“Sei sfarzoso means…”
No, stay awake. Come on ears do your job! I tried to coax my body to listen to no avail.
