Arriving home, I placed my bag on the coffee table. I walked to my kitchen to warm up a cup of noodle. My throat was starting to hurt, and I was not sure if I was thinking of not going to work the next day. I would call off from work tomorrow I decided as a sat on the couch with my noodle cup in hand.
If I was going to call off, I needed to be ahead in my work. I did not want to be drowning in work when I came back. I pulled out my devices and set out to work. I worked well into the night and early hours of the morning.
I woke the next morning to my phone ringing. I proceeded to push the button to silence the phone before rolling over. I dozed off withing seconds of the noise going away.
Bang… Bang… Bang…
My eyes opened to the sound of banging. It took me a few minutes to realize someone was knocking at my door. When I finally came to, I slowly sat up from the couch to answer the door. I opened the door partially to find Jace on the opposite side of the door. I let Jace into the apartment making my way back to the couch.
The apartment was not big or special in anyway, but it was hers. The front door lead into the living room. The couch was the main piece, with a coffee table centered in front of it. There was a beautiful brick fireplace on the far wall… The only thing that looked decent in the apartment. The kitchen was across from the living room. The kitchen was clean, but everything in it was cheap. Except the coffee table in the living room, it is pure wood. The walls were a horrible wallpaper from the early 90’s. There were bars over the window for the safety of the tenants. The bathroom was basic like everything else in the apartment. There was a shower and tub combo. Two carpets, one in front of the tub and another in front of the sink. The sink has storage beneath it. The bathroom has two doors: one leading to the hallway and the other to the bedroom. The last thing in the home was the bedroom and its closet. The room held a nightstand, with a clock on it. A dresser was against one wall which she did not need due to her limited wardrobe.
Sneeze…Cough… Sneeze… Sneeze…
“Can I help you?”, I grabbed a tissue from the box on the table, blowing my nose before discarding the tissue to the floor.
“You were not answering my calls”, he walked in closing the door behind him.
“Yeah, I was going to call in sick, but I guess I didn’t hear my alarm go off”, a coughing fit erupted.
Jace passed me the glass of water that was sitting on the table when I stopped coughing.
“I see”, he placed his hand on my forehead as I gulped down the water.
Once, I finished the remnants of the glass I laid back onto the couch pulling the blanket with me.
"And the next time you come to my house banging on the door like you are the police I will treat you as such and leave you put there knocking", I rolled my eyes.
I was happy he showed up though. It shows he cares for his employee's and I do not want to be labeled as a no call no show. I could have been fired had he not shown up and found out I was sick. I needed this job. For once in my time knowing Jace I was not worried about him looking down on me, or me being embarrassed in front of him. I was simply worried about the sleep I would be able to get now. I felt horrible not being able to work but I did not want to get anyone at the office sick and I could barely stop couching or blowing my nose when I was awake.
My second time waking up was to the smell of food. I jumped off the couch rushing to see if I left food on the stove. I know I cannot be the only one who can do things in a daze when sick and forget. I entered the kitchen to find Jace in front of my stove. There were bags littered about on the floor and counter tops.
“What are you making?”, I stepped further in the kitchen to see.
“Tomato soup, chicken and dumpling soup, grilled cheese, and cold cuts”, he did not look away from what he was doing on the stove. “You still sound tired; you should go wash up and lay in bed I’ll bring it to you when it’s done”.
I nodded and did as told. The shower did make me feel slightly better, but it was also draining. I put on a fresh pair of shorts and camisole before climbing into my bed. I put my glasses on the pillow beside me. The bed smelled of Lysol and I knew I had not done it. I opened my eyes again looking around my room and it had been cleaned. He cleaned my room…
I smiled sinking back into my sheets loving the smell. It did not take me long to fall asleep.
A hand was on my cheek. I swatted at it before rolling over.
“Ryan”, why would not he let me sleep.
“Shh”, I mumbled pulling the covers over my head.
The cover was now gone and replaced with something warmer, firmer, and smelled better.
I opened one eye and found Jace looking at me, clearly amused.
“Hey, you okay?”, his voice warmed my heart.
I nodded, not remembering if I brushed my teeth.
He shifted making us both sit up. That is when I noticed the smell of food and my stomach ached with hunger and excitement. I pulled away from him immediately wanting to go back to his warmth. I resisted the urge and put my back against the backboard. I watched Jace walk around and pick a small bed table up before putting it over me. I did not know people made things for food in bed. I smiled at the food before starting to eat.
No one has ever made me food in bed or food at all for that matter. I was enjoying being taken care of while I was sick. I looked at Jace who was on his phone messaging someone in admiration. He was kind… I guess we started off on the wrong foot. I did think he did not care for me much even when he said he did not hate me because of his actions. This was sweet, it made me long for something I had not in a long time… Love.
I was not good with choosing the right men. Granted I have only been in one relationship but even men I like usually suck. I also had abandonment issues from my parents… Can you say daddy issues?
The food was amazing. I ate some of everything, but my appetite was a bit worse due to being sick.
“Here”, I looked at what Jace was handing me. Pills…
“What is this”, I took them from his hand.
“Cold and fever medicine”, he passed me the packages.
After reading over the package I took the pills. He also gave me a large glass of water to wash everything down and I took it drinking half.
“Do you want to watch a movie?”, I looked around my room with furrowed brows.
“You do see that I do not have a television… Right”, was he trying to be funny? I thought.
He pulled a laptop from beside him and placed it between us.
“Oh, yeah that’s fine”, I scooted closer to the middle of the bed to try and see the small screen. “Did you take my glasses?”, I squinted at him.
He reached beside him and passed them to me.
I mumbled a thanks before pulling them on and letting him choose a movie. About halfway into the movie I found myself leaning on his shoulder. I would have sat up and apologized if I had the energy and if he did not smell so good. I could feel my head starting to nod off his shoulder when his hand caught it. I snapped awake a bit.
“Sorry”, I mumbled looking at him. His hand was the only thing saving me from breaking my neck.
He did not speak. Looking me in my eyes I of course looked him in his. I had the urge to kiss him. Why did I want to kiss him suddenly? All he did was cook for me and give me medicine. I was losing my mind. Yeah that is what is happening. That would explain it all.
He kissed my forehead before laying my head down on the pillow. I was at an angle I could still see the movie, but I was so tired it was beginning to blur out and the sound was not clear either. Before I fell asleep, I could feel him pull my glasses off and my heart melted right along side the polar ice from global warming.
