Hearing Joey's words, the other girls looked at me with a mix of caution and wariness, and some even took a few steps back, looking anxious.
"Joey, you're such a shameless woman. Do you want me to tell them your dirty laundry?" I was furious and felt the urge to hit Joey right then and there.
But I couldn't bring myself to attack a woman; it went against everything I believed. And Joey, who had been my wife for so long, knew that very well.
"Hans, you wouldn't dare lay a hand on me!" Joey's voice was icy. "You tried to kill me earlier. Once we get back, I'll call the police. I will make you pay for what you've done!"
My anger boiled over, and I wanted to slap her. "You want me to pay? The one who should be paying is you! I've treated you so well and even covered your father's medical expenses. To repay the several million dollars to loan sharks, I worked three jobs day and night. What about you? You just stayed home and did nothing."
I continued, "I sacrificed so much for our family, but you betrayed me. We're already divorced, and I shouldn't have saved you from the sea."
As soon as I said that, the women around us sensed something was off, but Joey just sneered, "You're a pathetic loser! You always blame me for everything. If you had the money and skills to provide me with the life I wanted, why would I want to divorce you?"
She kept slandering me, "You're just making excuses! Those are your reasons for murdering me. I'll call the police when we get back. You'll regret having tried to kill your wife, you f*cking piece of sh*t."
"F*ck, I'll kill you right now!" I had reached my breaking point. 'How can she be so shameless? Even if it means spending the rest of my life in prison, I will kill her!' I thought.
At that moment, several women stood up to block Joey from me.
The curvy woman who hadn't introduced herself spoke up with righteous indignation, "I don't care what happened between you two, but we're women without the power to fight back. We can't keep a ticking time bomb like you around."
"Hans, get lost. Leave your family problems to the police!" a woman chimed in.
My fury erupted. "She cheated on me, and she is playing the victim. Why are you standing up for her?"
"What she did is not a reason for you to kill her! She's still your wife. Can't you forgive her?"
"It was a mistake to save you. You're not a responsible man. Just leave us alone."
"Joey just found her true love and wants to pursue her happiness. Can't you just forgive her and get a divorce? Hans, what you're doing is disgusting."
Their words pierced my heart like daggers.
'What are these women thinking? Is cheating acceptable? Is the stupid pursuit of true love really worth forgiveness?' I wondered.
I gritted my teeth. "You bunch of foolish b*tches! If I really wanted to kill her, why would I have risked my life to save her from the sea?"
I turned to Joey. "You're such a shameless woman, Joey. If you want to call the police and take me to court, go ahead. One day, you'll pay for what you did today, you f*cking b*tch!"
But as I said this, Joey didn't respond. She returned to her indifferent expression from before the shipwreck, looking down at me as if she was still in control. I had nothing more to say and turned to leave.
Joey probably thought I was a pushover. Because of her accusations, I felt isolated and unable to confront her.
I clenched my fists. 'She will regret it.'
"Joey, take me with you." Just then, I heard two voices behind me.
"Wait, I'm coming too!"
I realized that these voices belonged to Lisa and Anna. They were actually following me.
Joey's angry shout rang out. "Why... Why are you willing to follow a murderer? You're so foolish."
Lisa retorted without turning her head, "On this island, we need men for labor. We don't want to argue over this."
Anna added, "Lisa is right. Without men, we can't accomplish many things."
Unfortunately, their words didn't find any support and only stirred up more hatred.
"You useless b*tches. All you do is rely on men. Shame on you!"
"I'm not surprised. They're just two wh*res. We're not like those sl*ts who are always so desperate for men."
"Come on, he's no different than an impotent man in bed; who knows if he can even satisfy you?"
The women's comments grew harsher, and I grabbed Lisa and Anna's hands, quickening my pace. "Let's go; just ignore them."
Fueled by anger, I walked quickly, and it took a while for my rage to subside. Then, heavy doubt crept into my mind. 'What should I do with these women in the next few days? Forget it. I'll just take it one step at a time.'
When I spotted a grove of coconut trees, I turned to Lisa and Anna and said, "You two go gather some firewood. I'll start a fire after I pick some coconuts to fill your stomachs."
Lisa and Anna exchanged glances and agreed happily before running off to find wood. I quickly climbed a nearby coconut tree, grabbed a few coconuts, and dropped them on the ground. After smashing them open on a rock, I started drinking the sweet coconut water and eating the flesh inside.
At that moment, the gnawing hunger and thirsty that had plagued me since I woke up began to fade.
After I had my fill, Lisa and Anna returned with firewood. As I lit the fire, I shared the remaining coconuts with them. The crackling flames helped dry our damp clothes, and slowly, the energy I had lost during the chaotic events began to return. Once we finished resting, I decided it was time to explore this mysterious island.
Not wanting to get too lost, I stayed close to the beach as we walked. After strolling for a while, I noticed the dense underbrush and various animal tracks, which made me uneasy. I decided it was best to head back to the beach.
As I walked along the beach, I didn't find anything new. There was just the same sand, shells, and crabs that were there when I first opened my eyes.
There were a few footprints left by the girls but no sign of anyone else living on the island. It seemed like we were truly alone here.
"Alright, let's start a fire," I said, a little disappointed as I gathered the wood the girls had collected and began to light it again.
Once the fire was going strong, I wandered along the beach, hoping to find some seafood.
To my surprise, the storm had left quite a few dead sea creatures scattered across the sand. I searched around and collected a good number of scallops, conchs, and several stranded fish.
"Wow, I'm so lucky!" I exclaimed.
After piling up the seafood I had found, I looked for some oddly shaped sticks to use as cooking tools. I placed the scallops and conchs over the fire to roast.
Soon, the tantalizing aroma of cooking seafood filled the air, making my stomach rumble with anticipation. I tasted several sea urchins before grabbing the sticks I found and skewering the fish to make some impromptu kebabs.
Lisa and Anna followed me, their mouths watering at the sight. Anna, looking a bit pitiful, said, "I... I'm starving. Can you share some food with me?"
"Of course! This is yours, and this is Lisa's!" I replied, handing out the roasted food happily.
Seeing me distribute the meal, Lisa looked a bit surprised. "Aren't you going to have your fill first before sharing with us?"
"You two decided to stick with me, so you're my companions," I said with a grin. "But my food isn't free; if you want to eat what I provide, you'll need to work for me. Deal?"
To my surprise, Lisa, who had been getting along with me, suddenly seemed cold as if my words had hit a nerve.
"Why should I?" she replied, clearly unhappy. "Just because I ate your food doesn't mean I have to listen to you."
I was a bit taken aback. "Why not? Isn't that a fair deal?"
"I'm a person. You've only given me a little food; don't you think that's a bit too much to ask?" Lisa asked.
I understood the mindset of a woman like her; they often stressed rules and concepts that suited them without paying attention to the circumstances. But we were on a deserted island, and I was the only one providing food, so naturally, I had the right to set the rules.
I said bluntly, "Then go find your own food. I'm not gonna babysit you."
With that, I shot her a glare, unwilling to tolerate her arrogant attitude.
