Alpha, should we kill her like the other two? She’s clearly one of them."
The voice cut through the silence like a blade. Yessica lay motionless on the bed, her breathing shallow, her eyes shut tight. She wasn’t ready to face them—because facing them meant death.
"Have they not kidnapped and tortured our kind?" another voice growled, deeper, colder.
"Yes, Alpha."
"Then we return the favor. This one will bear the weight of our vengeance."
The voice that answered was commanding, edged with fury—but it wasn’t the threat that made Yessica’s skin prickle. It was the voice itself. Deep, smooth, magnetic. It wrapped around her like velvet and steel.
Why did it affect her like this? Was it fear? Or something far more dangerous?
"She’s awake," the Alpha snarled. "Eavesdropping. The little wench."
Yessica’s eyes snapped open. Her heart thundered as she scrambled to the edge of the bed, ready to bolt. But she froze.
She wasn’t alone with two men as she’d assumed. There were four of them—hulking, silent, and far too close. They flanked her like shadows, their eyes glowing faintly in the dim light.
"P-please," she stammered, her voice trembling. "I’m not one of them."
A lie. But maybe a necessary one.
The man who had spoken first raised a brow. She didn’t need to be told he was the Alpha. He radiated authority. His silver eyes locked onto her like a predator sizing up prey. His hair, the same shade as his eyes, fell to his shoulders in loose waves. No beard, but his jaw was sharp, his body sculpted like a warrior’s.
Too sinfully handsome for his own good.
"Oh?" he said, voice low and amused. "Then why are you dressed in their robes?"
Yessica shook her head, tears welling in her eyes. "I stole it. From one of their gatherings. I needed to blend in—to survive."
The Beta, a broad-shouldered man with a scar across his cheek, narrowed his eyes. "Why would you need to blend in?"
Here it comes, she thought. The lie of the year.
"I-I’m a werewolf," she whispered. "I haven’t shifted yet. My pack was destroyed by them. I was just an omega. If they found out what I was, they’d have killed me."
The men exchanged glances. Then they sniffed the air.
"Alpha," the Beta growled. "She’s lying. She doesn’t smell like one of us."
The Alpha’s lips curled into a slow, sinister smile. "Is that so?"
"I swear," Yessica said quickly. "My mother gave me something to hide my scent. I never knew why until now."
She reached beneath her collar and pulled out a necklace. A silver pendant shaped like a crescent moon, its edges adorned with tiny roses.
The Alpha stepped forward, eyes narrowing as he examined it. His fingers brushed hers—warm, calloused, electric.
"This is old magic," he murmured. "It masks scent. Rare. Powerful."
"Why would her mother give her that?" one of the others scoffed.
"To protect her from those cloistered witches," the Alpha snapped.
Then the Beta muttered something that made Yessica’s stomach twist.
"Or maybe… to keep her from finding her mate."
"Beta," the Alpha warned.
"It makes sense."
"No, it doesn’t," Yessica and the Alpha said in unison, both bristling.
Yessica glanced at him, just for a second. His expression was unreadable.
"My mother wanted me to find my mate," she said softly. "She believed he’d protect me. From them."
Another lie. But it worked. The men nodded, their suspicion easing.
The last man, who had remained silent until now, stepped forward. "What’s your name?" he asked, voice low and cruel.
She hesitated. Her real name was a death sentence.
"Alyssa," she said.
The name tasted bitter on her tongue. It belonged to one of the sisters she’d left behind. One of the women she’d abandoned to die.
Guilt clawed at her, but she buried it deep.
"Welcome to the Rogue’s Pack," the Beta said with a grin. "I’m the Beta. He’s the Alpha."
Yessica nodded slowly, her mind racing. So she was in. For now.
"You’re welcome to stay," the Beta added. "You’ve got nowhere else to go."
She forced a smile, though her stomach churned. Trapped. Surrounded. Lying through her teeth.
"You boys don’t mind that I’m a weak, helpless omega?" she asked, pouting just enough to sell it.
The Alpha’s eyes lingered on her a moment too long.
"No," he said, voice like thunder wrapped in silk. "We like secrets. And you, little wolf, are full of them."
Yessica smiled sweetly.
But inside, she was already planning her escape.
