Chapter Forty-Six

1300 Words

“What do you expect me to do, Axel?” Harmony’s voice breaks through the air, no longer quiet, no longer something she’s trying to keep contained. It carries—sharp, strained, and just this side of unraveling. She turns fully toward him now, the phone still clutched tightly in her hand like it’s tethered to everything she is trying to hold together. “I left him,” she continues, her chest rising faster now, the words coming harder. “I ignore his calls. I hid when he showed up to my place.” That last part slips out before she can stop it. Before she can dress it up into something easier to hear. Her jaw tightens, her grip on the phone tightening with it. “I don’t know what you expect from me…” The words don’t trail off—they hang, heavy and exposed, like she’s thrown them down between them
