Ah, right on cue," he murmured, a hint of a smile playing on his lips. The doors to the dining room swung open, and a figure stood in the entrance, their eyes locked onto mine. My heart skipped a beat as I felt the blood drain from my face. It was a man whose forehead was drooling with blood, and he was being dragged upstairs by Dante's men, he looked mercilessly beaten and drained. “Get up little tiger, I have something to show to you” he dragged me along, with his iron-grip, one I couldn't escape, while his sister sat bewildered but unsurprised. My entire world froze as I wondered what was going through Dante's mind and what he was about to reveal through this mysterious man. We moved through a narrow tunnel beneath the mansion, its damp floor slick beneath my feet, skulls carved into the walls like silent witnesses. With every step Dante took, unflinching and unbothered, my fear of him tightened around my throat. While I walked, Dante stylishly takes turn to catch a glimpse of me, I'm uncertain of his constant supervision, he had calculative sight of my steps because of the dimmed path or perhaps of his thoughts of me escaping. “We are here” said Dante, as he points to a room that had a skull sign written on it, and loud cries emanating from a man who seems to be experiencing torture. He pull on a glove, smiling with a twisted excitement, like a child expecting a Christmas present. The room was suffocately cornered with men of different heights, build and race. They gnarled at me like a lion attempting to catch a prey, I didn't allow for eye contact, as their eyes burned with desire to destroy. I saw a man lying almost lifeless on the ground, it was same man from earlier. “Raise him!” Dante shouted, no stream of pity shown on his face. “Well, well…I must say I am most enpressed at how far you could, what was it? Two months, five months? What was it? He said snapping at his guard. “Six years, boss” the guard said standing with his legs wide open and his two hands in his pockets. “Why do I have to be here?“ I said, sensing something off. “You should be here, so you learn and revision” he said as he drags me to the position of the man. “This man as owed me for so many years and has decided to abscond rather than settle “ He said as his aggressively drags the man by his beard and throws him to a close wall. “Please…pl…please…I'll pay back, I'll restore all that..“ he couldn't finish speaking as a slap came heavily on his face, Dante had struck him. “Pay you say? You are much of a traitor that deserves nothing but execution, a traitor must be punished” he said as he lands a kick on the man's belly. “No…not the execution, not the execution please “ said the man, sweating profusely with his hand trembling out of fear. “You belonged here, to us, to the Romano haven, but you misused my favor, betrayed me, and killed three of my men, you sold your brothers, my men ! to the enemies!“ Dante said as he grabs the man by the neck. “I was helped out with the murder, it wasn't just me, but I just can't say who sent me, he will go after my family if he finds out I told you” said the man shaken. “handle it” ordered Dante as some men dragged him from my presence and took him to a room. It was all wailing, machine grinding, laughters from the men, then it became quiet, it was the obvious, he had been killed. I stared at Dante shaken while he watched me, he stared with a devious smirk, while wiping blood off his finger, unshaken and unbothered. “Do you know what that means, Mrs Moretti?“ He questioned “I do not” I forced my voice not to tremble, I couldn't tell why, but I just didn't want to show my fear to Dante, for reasons I didn't know why. “You sure don't, little Angel” He said laughing hysterically. “My traitors don't live to tell of their betrayal, they get the deserving, the death penalty” he said glaring with blazing eyes. “I am no traitor,I didn't have to see that, you didn't have to put up that show” I said, moving close to him, unconsciously daring. “You've got some nerve” he sniffled “Nevertheless, you get to know that could be your father also, if you dare me, if you so much tempt me, trust me! My rage is filled with lessons of regret that betrayers get to learn” he said as he dragged me out of the room and orders his men, two heavily built men, to escort me to my room. The gory imagery couldn't leave me, i leaned back as warm water slid over my skin, pretending it could erase the memory of his cruel deeds, i could remember the pleading, the tears, the trembling from that stranger, but Dante's hardened heart could not comprehend these emotions. He was bent on revenging, destroying and exhibiting dominance and subjugation. I came out of the shower and met the maid waiting with a Journal and a pen to give to me. “Master Romano had asked that i hand this to you” “And what does he ask that I do with it” “He has asked that you pen down your every experience with him, most notably, your experience with him today, he would love to have a view of what literature is to his soon-to-be-bride” she said as she exits the room, locking it from the outside. I stared bitterly at the journal, as I thought of how my life has turn to a mediocre, I don't have a will of my own, I now live in restraining orders of a man I just came to know in my life. A devastating experience that has an unpromising future and an experience that would crash my dreams of having a normal life, like the life I had with Ethan. I picked up the pen and flipped the page open and wrote a short note. “The seasons of reaping is near, even the one who hold an authoritarian seat reaps in abundance, their rot” I noted, as I placed the book close to me, bothered as to what he might do with my notings. I was taken aback when the maid turned the key at the door and opened the room, she was back for the journal, or so I thought. But it was an entirely different person, Dante himself made a first appearance in the cage he had kept me, with his eyes rotating round to see the cage he had placed me. “You are one lucky girl, you are leaving my dreams” he mocked me as he intended me living a life of luxury. He grabbed the book from the bed and flipped it open to see what I had written, his brightened countenance turned to rage as he gripped me by the jaw, and stared deep into my eyes, i felt the rage on his grip. “Your father would be killed, or no…why don't I actually sell him off to someone who really wants him dead in a minute, I have been delaying “ he said as he flung me to the bed, and immediately faces the door about to leave but I fell to my kneel pleading. “Please just don't hurt him, I have been staying indoor, deprived of all freedom, how much more do you want of me “ I said feigning my glance “How much more can you offer for your father's sake should be the question, don't act arrogant around me and think high, I am Dante Romano, I give orders and you obey” he said dragging me off the bed “Let me goooo!“ I screamed, struggling from his fierce grip. “I am getting all the arrangements done, you will get married to me and do my biddings” “Prepare her for dinner “ he said ordering the maid who had just walked in, as he slams the door furiously leaving me with a scare that sunk deep into my soul. “Miss More…” “I need to wash” I said as hot tears dropped down my chin, as I reflected on the pawn I had become to Dante. “You are meeting with the wedding planner to get your measurements for the wedding dress, your wedding is two days from now” said the maid as she heedlessly selected a dress from the wardrobe and prepared all she needed to get me set for the dinner. It was the final step, the moment before the devil’s name would be carved into mine forever.
