Chapter Three

The acceptance letter sat open on Ella's laptop long after the sun had disappeared. She had read the email at least ten times, yet the words still felt unreal. "Congratulations! We are pleased to offer you admission..." Months ago, receiving that email would have been the happiest day of her life. She would have run into Daniel's arms, waving her laptop in excitement while they talked about how they would make a long-distance marriage work. Now, there was no "they." There was only her. Ella closed the laptop and leaned back in her chair. The apartment was painfully quiet. A place that had once felt like home now echoed with memories she wished she could erase. Her eyes wandered to the dining table. Stacks of wedding invitations lay neatly arranged beside a notebook filled with seating plans, flower ideas, and honeymoon destinations. She walked over and picked up the invitation on top. Daniel & Ella Together Forever. A bitter smile tugged at her lips. "Forever," she whispered. "What a beautiful lie." Without another thought, she tore the invitation in half. Then another. And another. Tiny pieces of white paper floated to the floor like broken promises. Her phone vibrated. Daniel Calling... She stared at the screen until it stopped ringing. A second later, another message appeared. Please don't do this. Let me explain. She typed a reply. You had months to explain. She hesitated before adding one last sentence. You only spoke because I heard you. She pressed send. Then she blocked his number. The silence that followed was strangely comforting. For the first time in months... Daniel no longer had a place in her future. The following afternoon, Ella drove to her parents' house. She hadn't planned to tell them everything. She only wanted to say the wedding was off. But the moment her mother opened the front door, Ella's composure crumbled. "My baby..." Her mother's voice softened. "What happened?" Ella stepped inside, and before she could answer, tears filled her eyes. Her mother wrapped her in a warm embrace. "It's okay," she whispered. "You don't have to be strong all the time." Those words broke the dam. Ella cried against her mother's shoulder, months of stress and one night of heartbreak pouring out all at once. Her father walked into the living room moments later. He looked from his wife to his daughter. No one needed to explain. He already knew something terrible had happened. An hour later, the three of them sat in the living room. Ella told them everything. The dinner. The laughter. The conversation. The confession. The ring. By the time she finished, silence filled the room. Her father folded his hands together. "I liked Daniel," he admitted quietly. Ella lowered her head. "So did I." "But the man you described yesterday..." He shook his head. "...isn't the man I believed he was." Her mother reached across the table and held Ella's hand. "You did the right thing." "It doesn't feel like it." "It never does." Her mother smiled sadly. "Walking away from someone you love rarely feels right at first." Ella wiped away another tear. "I got accepted." Both parents looked at her. "The postgraduate program." "The one overseas?" her father asked. She nodded. "I don't know if I should still go." Her father didn't hesitate. "You should." She blinked. "What?" "You worked hard for that opportunity before Daniel ever proposed." He leaned forward. "Don't allow one man's betrayal to become the reason you abandon your dreams." Her mother smiled. "Maybe this isn't an escape." "Maybe it's a new beginning." Ella looked down at her hands. For the first time since ending her engagement... The future didn't seem completely dark. Three weeks later... Two suitcases stood beside the apartment door. The walls looked strangely empty. Daniel's belongings had been collected. The wedding decorations were gone. Even the framed photographs had disappeared. Only one remained. The picture of them on the beach the day he proposed. Ella picked it up. She stared at their smiling faces. They had looked so happy. So certain. She gently removed the photograph from its frame. Folded it once. Then slipped it into a small box with a few other memories. Not because she wanted to keep loving Daniel. But because pretending those years never existed would be another kind of lie. She closed the box. And left it behind. The airport buzzed with life. Announcements echoed through the terminal as travelers hurried toward their gates. Ella adjusted the strap of her handbag and pulled her suitcase behind her. Everything felt unfamiliar. Exciting. Terrifying. She checked the departure board. Flight 247 – On Time. As she reached the security line, her phone vibrated. An unknown number. She frowned before answering. "Hello?" A pause. Then... "Ella." Her heart sank. Daniel. "I borrowed someone's phone," he said quickly. "I just wanted to hear your voice one last time." She closed her eyes. "What do you want, Daniel?" "I know I don't deserve another chance." "No." "I just..." His voice cracked. "I'm sorry." Ella looked through the airport window at the aircraft waiting on the runway. "So am I." He sounded confused. "For what?" "For believing forever meant the same thing to both of us." She ended the call. Blocked the number. Then quietly removed the SIM card from her phone. She dropped it into the nearest trash bin. No more calls. No more messages. No more looking back. The loudspeaker echoed through the terminal. "Final boarding call for Flight 247." Ella took a deep breath. Picked up her suitcase. And walked toward the boarding gate.
