DANGEROUS AFFAIR PROLOGUE NARRATED MANQOBA NCUKANA Manqoba Ncukana walked into the luxurious bedroom, his eyes scanning the space with a mix of exhaustion and resignation. The dim lighting and plish carpeted floor felt like a welcoming oasis after the chaos of his day. He dropped his bag on the floor, the soft thud echoing through the quiet space. The long flight from Germany had taken its toll on him, and all he wanted to do was crawl into bed and forget about the stresses of the business meeting he had just attended. As he loosened his tie, his gaze fell on Nomalanga, his wife, who was fast asleep on the bed. She looked serene, her features relaxed in a way that he rarely saw when she was awake. Her phone was still clenched in her hand, probably still scrolling through social media until she dozed off. Manqoba couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness as he looked at her. This wasn't the marriage he had envisioned for himself. He had always dreamed of marrying someone kind, gentle, and loving. Someone who would be his partner, his confidante, his best friend. But Nomalanga was not that person. She was beautiful, there was no denying that. She was a socialite, always flossing her lavish lifestyle on social media, and he knew that she was admired by many. Beneath the surface, she was cold and calculating, always looking out for her own interests. Their marriage had been arranged, a business deal between two prominent families, and he had been reluctant to commit at first. He had grown to love her, or at least, he thought he had. Manqoba continued to undress, his eyes never leaving Nomalanga's peaceful face. He slipped off his suit jacket, followed by his shirt, revealing a chiseled chest and a slim, athletic build. He kicked off his shoes and socks, and his trousers soon followed, leaving him standing in just his boxers. He walked to the shower, the cool air conditioning a welcome respite from the fatigue that was creeping in. The warm water was a godsend, washing away the grime of travel and the stress of the day. He closed his eyes, letting the water massage his tired muscles, and for a brief moment, he forgot about the suffocating feeling that had been building up inside him. After what felt like an eternity, Manqoba stepped out of the shower, feeling slightly refreshed. He towel-dried himself, slipped on a pair of comfortable underwear, and got into bed next to Nomalanga. She stirred slightly, adjusting her position, but didn't wake up. He lay there, staring at the ceiling, his mind racing with thoughts of what he had gotten himself into. He wasn't a perfect man, he knew that. He had his own flaws, his own demons to battle. But he had never set out to hurt anyone, especially not the woman who was now his wife. He sighed heavily, trying to quiet his mind, and eventually, he drifted off to sleep, the scent of Nomalanga's perfume lingering in the air, a constant reminder of the life he was living. *** BUHLEBENDALO BHENGU Ndalo screamed with excitement as she stared at the SMS on her phone, her eyes widening with disbelief. The message was from the school, informing her that she had successfully obtained a bachelor's degree with five distinctions. Her mom, Priscilla, and her brother, Banele, were in the kitchen preparing dinner when they heard her sudden outburst. They immediately rushed into her room, concern etched on their faces, thinking that something was wrong. Banele; What's going on? Banele asked, his voice laced with worry, as he burst into the room. Banele; What happened? He looked at Ndalo, expecting to see tears or distress, but instead, he was met with a beaming smile. Ndalo didn't say a word; she simply held out her phone, displaying the message on the screen. Banele's eyes scanned the text, and a huge grin spread across his face. Banele; Congratulations, sis. He exclaimed, rushing to hug her tightly. Banele; 'm so proud of you. Priscilla, who had been standing by the door, watching the exchange, couldn't help but smile. Priscilla; We have to celebrate. She said, her voice filled with excitement. She walked over to Ndalo and wrapped her arms around her, holding her close. Priscilla; Congratulations, baby. She whispered, her eyes shining with pride. Ndalo nodded, still in shock, as she sat at the edge of her bed, her eyes fixed on the message. She couldn't believe it – all her hard work had paid off. She had done it. She felt a mix of emotions: relief, happiness, and a sense of accomplishment. She thought about the long nights, the early mornings, and the countless cups of coffee that had gone into this moment. As her mom and brother continued to congratulate her, Ndalo's mind began to wander to her future plans. She had always dreamed of working for a reputable company, and now, with this degree, she felt confident that she could make it happen. She thought about the possibilities, the opportunities that lay ahead, and a sense of excitement washed over her. **** MANQOBA NCUKANA Manqoba was woken up by Nomalanga's gentle touch, her soft hand caressing his body, sending a shiver down his spine. He groaned, opening his eyes slightly, feeling a bit disoriented from the sudden wake-up. The memories of the previous night's flight from Germany came flooding back, and he remembered collapsing into bed, exhausted. Nomalanga's voice was like music to his ears, but the tone was all too familiar - seductive, yet somehow empty. Nomalanga; What time did you arrive here?. She asked, her hand still exploring his skin. Manqoba replied, his voice husky from sleep. Manqoba; Midnight. I couldn't wake you up cause you were asleep. He didn't pull away, but he didn't reciprocate either, as she leaned in to kiss him. Nomalanga's lips met his, but he didn't respond, his mind still foggy from sleep and the lingering fatigue. Undeterred, Nomalanga smiled, her eyes sparkling with invitation. Nomalanga; How about we spend the whole day in bed? She purred, her voice dripping with suggestion. Manqoba's response was immediate. Manqoba; I can't. I have to go to work. He said that and swung his legs over the side of the bed, putting an end to the intimate moment. He stood up and walked to the shower, leaving Nomalanga looking slightly put out. As the water cascaded down his body, Manqoba couldn't help but feel a sense of relief. He had dodged a bullet, or so he thought. The warm water revived him, washing away the remnants of sleep and travel. He stepped out, towel-dried himself, and applied some lotion, feeling human again. He wore a light brown suit that fit him perfectly, paired with some sleek sneakers, and ran a comb through his hair. As he was getting dressed, he caught Nomalanga taking selfies in the mirror, her phone camera clicking away. He shook his head, chuckling to himself, and walked out of the room. Downstairs, breakfast was already set, and his mom was waiting for him. Kayise; Where's Nomalanga? She asked, as he sat down at the table. Manqoba replied, serving himself some food. Manqoba; Taking pictures for her i********:. He chuckled, shaking his head, and began to eat. The kitchen was filled with the sounds of clutches and murmured conversation as he chatted with his mother, enjoying the simple, genuine interaction. After finishing his breakfast, he stood up, kissed his mother's cheeks, and took his car keys. Manqoba; I'll see you later, Mom. He said, and with a quick goodbye, he left the house, feeling a sense of normalcy wash over him as he stepped out into the morning. As he drove away, he couldn't help but feel a twinge of discontent. Was this really the life he wanted? The thought lingered, but he pushed it aside, focusing on the day ahead, and the work that needed to be done.
