Chapter three: The day everything changed

For several moments, Elena simply stared at the letter. The room felt unusually quiet. Even the ticking clock on the wall seemed louder than before. Find Thomas Cole. The sentence repeated itself inside her head. Again. And again. And again. Her father had written those words nearly twenty years ago. Long before she understood what loss meant. Long before she was old enough to ask questions. And somehow, after all these years, the message had found its way back to her. "Mom..." Her voice sounded small. Uncertain. "Who was Thomas Cole?" Her mother looked away. A familiar sign that she was choosing her words carefully. "I never met him." Elena frowned. "But Dad knew him." "Yes." "Then how can you not know anything about him?" Her mother sighed. "Your father kept that part of his life separate." The answer wasn't satisfying. Not even close. "What does that mean?" "It means there were things he never discussed." Elena lowered the letter. "Why?" Her mother hesitated. For a moment, it looked as though she might finally reveal everything. Instead, she shook her head. "I don't know." Elena wasn't sure she believed that. Not completely. But she could see the sadness in her mother's eyes. The guilt. The years of carrying secrets she never wanted to carry. And suddenly anger felt unfair. So she reached across the table and squeezed her mother's hand. Neither spoke. Neither needed to. The silence carried enough emotion on its own. --- Later that evening, Elena returned home with the wooden box. Her mother insisted she keep it. "Your father would have wanted that." Those words stayed with her during the drive back. And now, sitting alone in her apartment, she carefully examined its contents. The notebook came first. Most of the pages contained ordinary notes. Dates. Appointments. Telephone numbers. Nothing unusual. Nothing mysterious. Until she reached the final page. There, written in hurried handwriting, was a single address. Blackwood Memorial Library Elena stared. The same library from the photograph. The same building she vaguely remembered visiting as a child. A chill ran through her. This couldn't be coincidence. Not anymore. The library meant something. She just didn't know what. Yet. --- Across the city, Adrian was reaching the same conclusion. The address appeared in one of the conference records Marcus had uncovered. Blackwood Memorial Library. Apparently, several attendees had met there privately following the conference. Including Thomas Cole. Including Daniel Hart. Adrian leaned back in his chair. This was the first real location connected to both men. The first place that might still hold answers. His instincts told him to visit immediately. His common sense reminded him that the library would be closed. Unfortunately, common sense rarely won arguments with Adrian. Thirty minutes later, he was standing outside the historic building. Rain still drizzled from the dark sky. The library looked ancient. Its stone walls glistened under the streetlights. Tall gothic windows stretched toward the clouds. It felt less like a library and more like a cathedral. A place built to protect knowledge. Or perhaps secrets. Adrian studied the building carefully. Most of the windows were dark. Except one. A faint light glowed near the second floor. Someone was still inside. Interesting. Very interesting. --- The following morning, Elena woke earlier than usual. For the first time in years, she felt genuinely excited. Nervous. But excited. She had already decided what she was going to do. Visit Blackwood Memorial Library. The idea seemed ridiculous. A single address in an old notebook shouldn't matter this much. And yet it did. Something deep inside her insisted that the library mattered. That her father had left it behind for a reason. By nine o'clock, she was standing outside the building. Her breath caught immediately. The place looked exactly as she remembered. Or almost exactly. The same stone walls. The same towering entrance. The same feeling. A strange feeling she couldn't explain. As though the building itself remembered her. As though she had returned after a very long absence. She climbed the steps slowly. Pushed open the heavy wooden doors. And stepped inside. The scent of old books instantly surrounded her. Thousands of shelves stretched across multiple floors. Sunlight filtered through stained-glass windows. Everything felt quiet. Sacred. Timeless. Elena found herself smiling. This place was beautiful. She approached the information desk. An elderly librarian looked up. "May I help you?" Elena hesitated. How exactly was she supposed to explain this? Hello, I'm searching for clues connected to my dead father and a man I've never met. Instead, she smiled politely. "I'm looking for historical records." The librarian nodded. "What kind?" Elena took a breath. "Records related to Daniel Hart." The librarian's expression changed. Only slightly. But enough. Enough for Elena to notice. And enough to make her heart beat faster. Because for the first time since this began... Someone recognized the name. --- At that exact moment, Adrian walked through the opposite entrance. He had returned early. Determined to explore the library properly. The elderly librarian noticed him immediately. And looked surprised. Two visitors. Two questions. Two names. One mystery. Neither Adrian nor Elena saw each other. Not yet. They stood on opposite sides of the enormous building. Separated by only a few rooms. Separated by only a few moments. And completely unaware that fate was already bringing them together. The past had waited twenty years. It wouldn't wait much longer. The elderly librarian adjusted his glasses. For several seconds, he simply stared at Elena. Not in a rude way. More like someone struggling to decide how much to say. Finally, he spoke. "Daniel Hart." The name sounded strangely familiar coming from someone else's lips. "Yes," Elena replied. The librarian remained silent for another moment. Then he stood. "Follow me." Her heart immediately began to race. Questions flooded her mind. Why had he recognized the name? What did he know? And most importantly... Why did he suddenly seem nervous? The librarian led her through several rows of shelves. Past reading tables. Past private study rooms. Toward a quiet section of the building few visitors seemed to use. Finally, he stopped beside a locked cabinet. From his pocket, he removed a small key. The lock clicked open. Inside rested several old archive boxes. The librarian carefully removed one. Dust drifted into the air. "This was left here many years ago." Elena stared. "For my father?" The old man nodded slowly. "He visited often." Her throat tightened. "He did?" "Very often." A strange warmth spread through her chest. For years, her father's life had felt incomplete. Like a story missing entire chapters. Now those missing pieces were beginning to appear. The librarian placed the box on a nearby table. "He told me that one day someone might come looking." Elena's eyes widened. "What?" The old man smiled sadly. "He never said who." For a moment, she couldn't speak. The idea that her father had anticipated this... Anticipated her search... Filled her with emotions she couldn't name. Hope. Fear. Excitement. Grief. All at once. --- Meanwhile, on the library's second floor, Adrian was experiencing a similar surprise. Another staff member had directed him toward a collection of archived newspaper records. The moment he mentioned Thomas Cole, the employee's expression changed. Exactly as the elderly librarian's had. Recognition. Concern. Memory. It was enough to convince Adrian he was finally in the right place. He spent nearly an hour reviewing old documents. Most revealed little. Until he discovered a visitor log. A very old visitor log. One particular entry immediately caught his attention. Thomas Cole Directly beneath it was another name. Daniel Hart The two names appeared together repeatedly. Dozens of times. Week after week. Month after month. Whatever investigation they had been conducting... This library had been at its center. --- Back downstairs, Elena carefully opened the archive box. Inside she found newspaper clippings. Photographs. Notes. Letters. Her hands trembled. Each item felt like a tiny piece of her father. A fragment of a life she barely remembered. Then she noticed something unusual. A photograph. The same photograph she had found at home. But larger. Clearer. And this time she noticed something she had missed before. There was a third person standing in the background. Partially hidden. Watching. Elena leaned closer. The image was blurry. Yet the figure felt important. Very important. Before she could study it further, a folded note slipped from the photograph. She unfolded it carefully. Only one sentence had been written. The answers are beneath the east wing. Her pulse quickened. The east wing? Of the library? Was it another clue? Another message? Before she could think further, a sudden noise echoed through the room. A stack of books crashed somewhere nearby. Startled, Elena looked up. Someone had accidentally bumped into a shelf. Several books now lay scattered across the floor. Without thinking, she hurried over to help. The stranger was already kneeling. Gathering the fallen books. "I'm sorry," he said. "I wasn't paying attention." Something about his voice felt familiar. Elena froze. The man looked up. Blue eyes met hers. For a brief moment, neither moved. Neither spoke. Recognition flashed between them. The bookstore. The mysterious customer. The woman behind the counter. The man who loved mysteries. The stranger from the rainy afternoon. Adrian broke the silence first. "You work at Hart & Pages." Elena blinked. "You remember?" A faint smile appeared. "Yes." To her surprise, she smiled too. Despite everything happening around them. Despite the mystery. Despite the questions. The tension eased slightly. Just enough. As they gathered the remaining books, Adrian noticed the photograph lying on the nearby table. His expression changed instantly. Completely. The smile disappeared. His eyes widened. "Where did you get that?" Elena followed his gaze. The photograph. Her father's photograph. Why was he reacting like that? Slowly, she stood. "Why?" Adrian stared at the image. Then back at her. Because he recognized it. He had spent the last two days staring at the exact same photograph. The exact same image. The exact same two men. Thomas Cole. Daniel Hart. His father. Her father. For a moment, neither knew what to say. The realization hung between them. Impossible. Unbelievable. And yet undeniably real. At last, Adrian spoke. His voice barely above a whisper. "Who are you?" Elena swallowed. "My name is Elena Hart." Silence. Complete silence. Then Adrian answered. "My father was Thomas Cole." The world seemed to stop. Twenty years of secrets. Twenty years of questions. Twenty years of buried truths. And somehow... They had both arrived at the same place. At the same time. Searching for the same answers. Neither realized it yet. But this meeting would change everything. Because from this moment forward, they would no longer be searching alone.
