Chapter Twenty-two Her nose and brain registered the smell. She was in the middle of a dream about barbecuing steaks when her ears got in on the game and the sound of sirens popped her eyes open. Sitting up in bed, she looked around the darkened bedroom, trying to figure out what she was smelling and hearing. “Oh crap, a fire!” Throwing the sheet aside, she scrambled off the mattress, nearly doing a header into the wall in her haste, as she hurried to a window that overlooked the front of the house. Seeing nothing but smelling the smoke so strongly it burned her nose, she tore out of the bedroom and down to the front door, hurrying out onto the wraparound porch.
