The settlement was a ghost town.
I walked through the empty streets, my footsteps echoing off the crumbling walls. The tents were abandoned, their flaps flapping in the wind. The training yard was silent, the weapons racks empty. Everyone was gone.
Everyone except me.
"Aldric."
I turned. Gideon was standing at the edge of the settlement, his face haggard. "We need to move. Now."
"What happened?"
"Percival's forces are closing in. Our scouts spotted them an hour ago. They'll be here by nightfall."
I nodded slowly. I'd known this moment would come. I'd just hoped it wouldn't come so soon.
"Where are the others?"
"Already in the tunnels. Waiting for you."
I followed him through the settlement, my feet carrying me toward the hidden entrance. The tunnels were dark, damp, but safe. We'd prepared them for this moment, stockpiling supplies and weapons.
Leander was waiting for me at the entrance, his face pale.
"They're coming," he said.
"I know."
"How many?"
"Thousands."
He was quiet for a moment. Then he stepped closer, his eyes fierce.
"We can't outrun them."
"No."
"Then we fight."
"Together."
---
The tunnels stretched endlessly before us.
We moved through them in silence, our footsteps echoing off the walls. The others were ahead of us, their faces grim. We'd lost so much. So many people.
Gideon appeared beside me, his voice low. "There's a way out. A hidden exit on the northern ridge. If we can reach it, we might be able to escape."
"Escape where?" I asked. "There's nowhere left to go."
"Then we make a stand." He grabbed my arm. "Right here. Right now."
I looked at the faces around me—tired, beaten, but determined. They were ready to fight. Ready to die.
"Fine," I said. "We make our stand."
---
The attack came at midnight.
We emerged from the tunnels, our weapons ready. The enemy surrounded us, their forces stretching across the Outlands. Percival appeared at the front, his face twisted with rage.
"This ends now!" he shouted. "Surrender, and I'll spare your lives!"
"We'll never surrender!" Gideon shouted back.
"Then die!"
The battle was chaos.
We fought with everything we had, our movements desperate. The enemy was relentless, their numbers overwhelming. But we held our ground.
Leander was beside me, his blade flashing in the moonlight. "There's too many of them!"
"Keep fighting!"
We cut through the enemy, our bodies aching. But they kept coming, wave after wave.
And then I heard the voice.
"Aldric!"
I turned. The Wraith was standing on a ridge, her mask in her hand. She looked different. Older. Tired.
"Get down!" she shouted.
I grabbed Leander, pulling him to the ground. The Wraith raised her weapon, firing into the crowd of enemies. They fell, one by one.
"Follow me!" she shouted.
We ran after her, through the chaos, our lungs burning. The enemy was close behind, their footsteps echoing in the darkness.
"This way!" she called.
We burst through a gap in the enemy lines, emerging into the Outlands. The night sky stretched above us, vast and dark.
"We made it," Leander said. "We actually made it."
"We made it." I pulled him into a hug. "We made it."
But as I looked at the faces around me, I knew it wasn't over.
Percival was still out there. And he'd be back.
---
The days that followed were quiet.
We buried the dead, tended to the wounded, tried to find a way forward. The resistance was smaller now, its numbers dwindling. But we were still fighting.
"Aldric." Gideon's voice was soft. "We need to talk."
I followed him to a quiet corner of the settlement. His face was grave.
"We've received word from inside the camp. Percival is planning another attack. This time, he's going to use everything he has."
"Then we prepare."
"We can't. We don't have the resources."
"Then we find them."
"How?"
I didn't have an answer. But I knew I'd find one.
---
That night, I stood alone on the roof of the settlement, staring at the stars.
Leander found me there, his footsteps soft on the concrete.
"Can't sleep?" he asked.
"Never can."
"Same." He sat beside me. "What are you thinking about?"
"About the future. About what happens next."
"What happens next is we keep fighting. We never stop."
I looked at him, this boy who'd been through so much. He was stronger than I'd ever been. Braver.
"You're right," I said. "We never stop."
---
The message came at midnight.
I was standing watch when the communicator crackled to life. The voice was distorted, barely recognizable through the static. But I knew who it was.
"Aldric." Percival's voice was calm, almost gentle. "I know you're listening. I know you're hiding. But you can't hide forever."
I didn't answer. I just listened.
"I have something you want. Information about the Shadow Protocol. The final phase." A pause. "If you want it, come to the camp. Alone. Tomorrow at dawn."
The communicator went silent.
I stared at it, my mind racing. It was a trap. It had to be a trap.
But what if it wasn't?
---
I found Leander in the training yard, his blade flashing in the morning light.
"Leander," I said. "We need to talk."
He stopped, turning to face me. "What is it?"
"Percival sent a message. He wants me to come to the camp. Alone."
"You're not going."
"I have to."
"No." He stepped closer, his eyes fierce. "You're not going. It's a trap."
"I know. But if there's even a chance he has information about the Protocol—"
"There's no chance. He's lying. He's always lying."
"I know. But I have to take that chance."
He was quiet for a moment. Then he grabbed my arm.
"I'm coming with you."
"No. He said alone."
"I don't care." His eyes were burning. "I'm not letting you do this alone."
I stared at him, seeing the conviction in his eyes. He was stronger than I'd ever been. Braver.
"Fine," I said. "Together."
---
Dawn came too fast.
I stood at the edge of the Outlands, the camp looming in the distance. Leander was beside me, his face pale but determined.
"Remember," I said. "If anything goes wrong, you get out. No heroics."
"Same to you."
We walked toward the camp, our steps steady. The guards at the gate watched us approach, their weapons raised.
"I'm here to see Percival," I said.
They didn't respond. They just opened the gate.
We stepped inside.
