Chapter Two: Fusion Sweet Spice The next day Olivia made freshly baked samosa and pancakes and its aroma filled the Louise household . Cooking wasn’t just something she did, she did it with so much love, and it sheltered her from the stresses of the outside world. She sang to herself while measuring out the spices, her hands were moving in the same pattern. Her aunt, Rose Louise, was moving around the kitchen, trying to prepare the meal for the morning. “Olivia, what are you doing?” Aunty Rose asked, cleaning her hands on her dress as she relaxed on the door. Olivia looked up from the turmeric mixture she was preparing and said “I’m working on a new recipe,” she said with a quiet smile. “I’m trying to balance the taste a little. Something new.” “New?” her aunt looked at her, she was feeling skeptical. “I hope you're not planning to add some fancy combinations to our family recipes. That’s not how we’ve been cooking since.” Olivia smiled softly. “I’m just trying something new. A meal that combines both traditional and modern.” Rose shook her head, with a smile all over her lips. “You and your new ideas. You have passion for it, but people would not always understand.” Olivia thought about what her aunt said. Rose was correct. She always uses the old recipes she got from her mother. Although she only cooked the meals she learnt as a child, she still faced every new challenge that came her way.", she had the desire to improve and get better, to grow as a chef, and try out new things. She remembered the cookbook that her mother gave her before she died. It was not a mere list of ingredients, it was a special gift of love and memories Now,Olivia wanted more than memories, she wanted something real. She needed to create something that would put her on the map. Today was the day. Three days later, Olivia stood outside Spice Theory, the luxurious new restaurant under Dominic’s empire. The restaurant wasn’t even opened to the public yet, but it was already the talk of the city. There were so many bright advertisements promising a new age of combined food, mixing traditional native spices with Western methods. Olivia was excited and tense as she gazed at the glass building. It was so different from her own kitchen, the intimacy of her family’s old recipes. Yet, here she was, standing before it, clutching a small lunch containing her experimental dish. She wasn’t just walking into a restaurant. She was stepping into a world that could change everything. And, unfortunately, it was a world that was ruled by one man. Dominic. The man whose words had cut deeper than any knife. The man who called her cooking “old-fashioned” and “past.” She held the handle of her lunchbox harder, swallowing down the bitterness and that had resurfaced since their last encounter. But she wouldn’t let him defeat her again. Not this time. Inside, the kitchen staff moved quickly and carefully, looking very serious and focused like soldiers in a war. A woman in a black skirt and jacket walked up to her,and asked “Are you Olivia?” she asked, in a polite but cold voice. “Yes,” Olivia replied, trying to calm herself. “Follow me. You’ll have fifteen minutes to prepare your meal and show it to the tasting panel. Chef Dominic will be watching.” The woman took her to one side of the kitchen with high quality utensils. The kitchen was filled with the smell of hot garlic, and fresh herbs. . Olivia kept her lunchbox down on the table, she looked around. The other contestants were busy cooking, chopping, and plating their food. She checked the clock. Fifteen minutes wasn’t much time. She had to work fast to get everything right. But this was her moment. Olivia moved fastly, she collected all the ingredients she needed. She knew exactly what she wanted to make—a modern version of her mother’s signature recipe. Coriander rice and sauce. It was a combination of the old and new ideas. She worked confidently, concentrating as she prepared the meal. The sauce was perfectly simmering on the fire. But time was running out. The clock was ticking. When she finished, Olivia carefully put the food on a plate. It looked modern, and stylish. She took a deep breath and stepped back, admiring her work Then, the door opened. Dominic entered, his tall figure filled the room.He looked around sharply, checking each food and each contestant. He seemed distant, like no one could affect him.. But Olivia wasn't scared this time. She stood tall,as he came closer to her station. His cold eyes went to the food she prepared. “You’re the one who made the coriander rice last time,” he said quietly. “Yes,” Olivia answered, calmly. “This is a new version of the same recipe.” He didn’t say anything for a moment. He collected the fork, took a little food, and ate it. He showed no reactions as he chewed slowly, he kept his eyes on hers. She was so tense. Finally, he swallowed. He looked at her softly, though he didn’t smile. “It’s good,” he said, his words were cold. “But it’s still Old. You haven’t improved enough.” Olivia felt sad, but she didn’t back down. “Some things don’t need change,” she said quietly. “Some things need to be appreciated.” She thought she saw something in his eyes. Maybe regret? Maybe anxiety? But it disappeared quickly as it had come. Dominic stood up,and put the fork down gently. “You’re hired. A one-week trial. Let’s see if you can work under pressure.” --- Olivia stood still for a moment, his words hitting her. It wasn't a victory. It wasn’t a big success. But it was something. She had gotten his attention. And that was a start. --- That evening, Olivia sat on her small balcony, enjoying fresh air as she looked at the city sky. She had made it. For now, atleast. A week. She had one week to prove herself. One week to show Dominic—and everyone—that her cooking was more than just memories. It was about heart, passion, and the future. She smiled, feeling stronger. It wouldn’t be easy, but she was ready for whatever that came next.
