Shadows Return

Spring brought rumors on the wind. In distant cities, a new faction rose—calling themselves the True Balance. They preached that Ariyah’s defiance upset natural order: magic should have died or ruled completely. No middle path. Whispers reached Thornvale: strangers asking about the woman who “stole the stars’ will.” Kael’s old instincts sharpened. He reinforced wards, taught villagers basic defense. One dawn, Lira arrived breathless. “They’re coming. A delegation—three ‘emissaries’ with null-iron relics.” Ariyah’s blood chilled. The Starheart stirred protectively. That evening, the strangers rode into the village square: cloaked figures bearing broken-star banners. Their leader, a cold-eyed woman named Veyra, addressed the crowd. “We seek the false vessel who defied heaven. Surrender her, and your village remains untouched.” Silence fell. Then Elara—now eight—stepped forward, small fists glowing. “My mama saved the stars. You’re just scared.” Gasps rippled. Kael appeared beside his daughter, hand on her shoulder. “Leave,” he said quietly. “Or learn why the oathbound no longer kneel.” Veyra smiled thinly. “We bear relics that bind even rewritten magic.” A tense standoff. Ariyah emerged from the crowd, belly rounded with new life. “I defied a cruel fate,” she said, voice carrying. “I won’t fight you. But I won’t hide.” The Starheart flared gently—warm light washing over the square, soothing fear. Villagers stepped forward, forming a silent wall. Veyra’s certainty wavered. They left at dusk, promising return with force. That night, Kael held Ariyah tightly. “I won’t lose you again.” “You won’t,” she promised. “We face this together.”
