Chapter 4

The moment the door closed, the room was completely silent. I could sense that they were looking at me, that their gaze was burning holes into my skin. My heart was pounding in my chest with the feeling of betrayal which was on me. They hated me, I had always known that. But now they have a cause, and the malevolence of their glances was more than I could handle. Cal went forward, and with an extremely impassive expression on his face. His formerly tender eyes were filled with nothing but greed. “Alara,” he said in a very composed voice that only made me shiver. “Oh it’s a shame it had to come to this.” I looked at him speechlessly. My mind went blank but the only thing that ran through my head was how I trusted him how I loved him. And how quickly he had turned that love into a tool used against me. “I... I couldn’t believe it, That couldn’t be true, But then again everything was possible in this world, I stammered, I don’t understand. “Cal, what is this?” He gave a wicked smile, a smile that was new to me. “You were useful, Alara. But now that you are powerless, it means that you are no longer of any use to me.” My heart sank. My powers. The very thing that had made me unique, had put me in danger to the pack, were gone because I had trusted him. He had convinced me to cut my ties with magical powers, for that, all in the name of love. And now, I was nothing without them. “But… I risked my life, I did it for you,” I said incoherently, I struggled to breathe. “I gave up everything.” “That is the very reason you have become heartless,” he told me, bitterness dripping from his voice. “You're nothing to me. You've never been. And to think that you thought you wee ever going to amount to anything other than a worthless half breed,” I stood there for a moment with my legs feeling like jelly and my mind trying to process what I’d just heard. I was lost trying to make sure I was hearing the right thing and it was not a dream. My stepsister Isla stood by his side, her smug look further stabbing me in the back. She was the complete opposite of me – she was strong, determined, and now engaged to Cal. “You’ll never be Alpha.” Isla deliberately said making sure she crushed my pride in front of everyone. “The pack has selected me to be the next Alpha and my chosen mate is Cal.” The truth hit me like a ton of bricks, or rather like a tidal wave. He had never loved me. This had all been a ruse to remove me from my position as the heiress of the kingdom and take over with Isla. I couldnt let this sink in, I was looking at Cal and the feeling I had in me couldn't be removed. I didnt know why he was doing anything he was doing at the moment or what he was going to gain from it but I wanted to know what his intentions were. “So all this time, what have you been doing with me? Was I a play thing for you?! Was all this all a joke for you?” I was looking at him and he couldn't even look at me, I was not going to let them make me look like a fool and then throw me away when they had no use for me. Cal smiled as he turned to look at me, he stared me dead in the eye and began coming close to me. “I wouldn't say that now, would I? I am only going to tell you one thing.” He walked over to me, leaning in to stare me in the eye. “I thought you were going to be smarter to see that you were being used. I honestly thought you were going to see the trick and stop, but then you were too lovesick to think straight, so I wasn't sure you would even see what was going on and how you were the fool there.” “Fool?” I muttered. I was looking at Cal and I could see him for the monster he truly, I was love struck and I was not even seeing anything he was doing for me to understand all that had happened. “I gave up my powers to make sure that I am going to be with you and yet you call me a fool? I did everything to make sure that you would see me as the one you love and not someone else but you saw that as me being a fool?” “Well, only a fool would ignore the warnings her people gave her. You were such a love-struck puppy, but now you are going to see that even that won't be able to save you from anything, now will it?” I looked up to see Isla smiling at me. I knew that this had been their plan all along, and I had walked into it blindly. I was not going to be able to do anything that would make it look like I had a chance to make it out of this mess, and all this did not look good for me. “So after all that, you were always conspiring with them to get rid of me?” I was looking at him, I couldn't hold back my anger. “I did everything to be with you and this is what you give me?!” Cal smiled, he was looking at me with a strange look I couldn't even seem to understand. “You were useful so don't fret dear, you weren't just cut out to be the Alpha and you know I cant let my pack fall into the hands of someone who would not be able to do anything for them.” I couldn't hold it in anymore, I looked at him before I spat on his face. “Bastard! I will make sure that you will pay for this and I am not going to let you even think of a way out of all this. I am going to tell you this once and you will see that “Get rid of her!” Cal commanded coldly without any feelings. The room turned, people getting up as if the command had turned on a switch in their brains. Fear rose through my veins, I felt my body move backward as if to flee but my mind told me that I cannot run. They were too many. And I was no longer strong enough to fight them off. “Alara, run!” The noise died down and I could hear Victor’s voice before my brother pulled me out of the house by the arm. We blindly fumbled into the night; my breathing was becoming short and ragged as we moved through the courtyard, the distant howls of wolves at our heels. “Victor,” I cried, tripping behind him. “What’s happening?” “They’re coming for you,” Victor said between breaths, holding my wrist a little tighter as we ran into the trees. “The pack wants you dead. Cal’s betrayed you, Alara. We have to get out of here.” My thoughts were racing in circles and my terror was building, but there was no opportunity to ponder it. I could see and hear the pack chasing me – the growling, the snarling, the footsteps on the ground. They were close. Too close. Victor pulled me to the front, he was looking at me. “I know I might not make it out alive but I want you to do this and promise me that you will get out of here alive without them even seeing you!” I was looking at my brother and I didnt know what he was planning to do but i knew it was going to be reckless. “What do you mean Victor? Dont do anything crazy, please we can make it out together.” I was holding his hand, I was mot sure what he would do but then he was not replying me or even doing anything to look at me. “Run south, down to the Viron Pack, you will have a chance to survive there. Whatever you do make sure that you dont look back or even stop, I will hold them off to make sure that nothing will happen to you,” “But….” “Go!” Victor yelled, I was not ready to leave him but seeing him in that state made me realize that I was going to be dealing with something more sinister if I didn't leave. I turned my back and began to run not looking back.
