Chapter 6 — Forced Proximity

Aurora discovered the partnership before sunrise. The notification appeared among dozens of routine emails, but one subject line immediately caught her attention. Strategic Joint Development Initiative — Approved. She opened the document. Vale Corporation. Devereux Holdings. Co-Chief Oversight. For the first time since rejecting the acquisition, Cassian Vale was no longer a distant presence. He had become a permanent part of her schedule. Amelia nearly dropped her coffee after reading the agreement. “Tell me you’re rejecting this too.” Aurora closed the file. “I can’t.” “You hate losing control.” “This isn’t about control.” “What is it about?” Aurora looked through the office window toward the city waking beneath them. “Finding out why someone keeps moving pieces around a board I never agreed to play on.” The first strategy meeting was scheduled for noon. Executives arrived early, conversations filling the conference room before falling silent the moment Cassian entered. He acknowledged everyone with a brief nod before taking his seat at the head of the table. Only one chair remained empty. Exactly on time, Aurora walked in carrying a tablet and a folder. No dramatic entrance. No apology. No attempt to impress anyone. She simply sat opposite him and opened her notes. Several executives exchanged nervous glances. The atmosphere felt strangely balanced. For the first time, someone occupied the same space as Cassian without surrendering it. The presentation began smoothly until a senior director questioned Devereux Holdings’ expansion strategy. “The timeline is too ambitious.” Aurora answered before anyone else could. “The timeline reflects efficiency.” “The market doesn’t move that quickly.” “It does when people stop waiting for permission.” A few executives lowered their eyes. Others pretended to study the presentation. Cassian watched the exchange without interruption. He had attended hundreds of meetings. Very few people defended their position under pressure. Even fewer sounded completely certain while doing it. When the meeting ended, employees filtered out in small groups until only Cassian and Aurora remained. Neither seemed eager to leave. Cassian gathered the documents in front of him. “You never compromise.” Aurora stood and slipped her tablet into her bag. “I compromise every day.” “I haven’t seen it.” “That’s because I choose carefully.” She walked toward the door. Cassian spoke again before she reached it. “Most people spend their energy trying to impress me.” Aurora rested a hand on the handle without turning around. “I’m busy impressing myself.” The door closed quietly behind her. For several seconds, the room remained completely still. One of Cassian’s assistants stepped back inside. “Should I arrange another meeting with Miss Devereux?” Cassian’s attention remained on the closed door. “No.” The assistant nodded. Cassian reached for his phone a moment later. “Move tomorrow’s schedule.” “To what time, sir?” “Whatever time she’s available.” The assistant looked genuinely surprised before quickly hiding it. “Understood.” Across town, Aurora’s phone vibrated with the updated meeting request. She stared at the screen for a moment before placing it face down on her desk. Amelia noticed immediately. “Are you smiling?” Aurora reached for another document. “No.” “You definitely almost did.” Aurora didn’t answer. But for the first time since meeting Cassian Vale, concentrating on work required slightly more effort than usual. And that small distraction was enough to change everything.
