Chapter 35 — The Second Kiss

505 Words
The space between them seemed to hold its breath. Aurora’s pulse hammered in her ears, each beat echoing in the quiet that stretched around them. Cassian’s eyes flickered over her face, dark and intense, as if he was weighing the moment, every hesitation, every unspoken thought before finally closing the gap. His hand moved slowly, almost reverently, to cradle her jaw, warm and firm. The touch was gentle but deliberate, grounding her in the reality of what was about to happen. Aurora’s breath caught, a mixture of anticipation and restraint swirling inside her. Cassian’s lips were close now, so close she could feel the faint brush of his breath, the subtle heat of him. And yet, he didn’t rush. His lips hovered just above hers, waiting, as if testing her resolve, her permission without words. Then, softly, he pressed his mouth to hers. The kiss was slow, deliberate, and electric. It was an unspoken declaration of everything they’d tried to deny the yearning that had simmered beneath their professional masks, the unspoken pull that had grown too powerful to ignore. His lips moved with purpose, warm and firm, conveying a depth of longing that words never could. Aurora’s hands instinctively found his shoulders, steadying herself as the flood of sensation threatened to engulf her. Her fingers curled slightly into the fabric of his suit, anchoring herself in the moment. Cassian’s other hand slid gently to the small of her back, pulling her just a little closer, pressing her against the solid warmth of him. His body responded instinctively, a quiet, restrained hunger that matched her own, an acknowledgment of the fire that had been building ever since they’d first met. Her lips parted slightly, invitation and surrender all at once, and he took it willingly, deepening the kiss just enough to let her feel the full weight of his desire. His mouth was demanding now, but still controlled, conveying both restraint and an unmistakable ache. Aurora’s pulse quickened as her senses heightened, the taste of him, the scent of his skin, the subtle pressure of his hands. She responded instinctively, her own lips moving in harmony, chasing the unspoken promise in that quiet, assured touch. Time seemed to dissolve around them, the world narrowing to just this their shared breath, the press of lips, the silent understanding that neither of them was holding back any longer. When they finally pulled apart, their foreheads rested briefly against each other, breaths mingling, eyes heavy with unspoken emotion. Cassian’s voice was a low, breathless whisper. “Tell me to stop,” he said, his tone rough with restraint. Aurora’s lips curved into a faint, tremulous smile. Her expression shifting as she met his gaze again, her answer quieter than anything she had said all day. “Don’t.” The word settled between them, heavier than either of them acknowledged. Even then, neither of them moved away properly. The space between them had already changed, and neither of them tried to return it to what it had been before.
