Chapter 29 — First Kiss

647 Words
Aurora Devereux should have left thirty minutes earlier because the meeting had ended, the reports had been reviewed, and every logical reason for remaining in the building had already disappeared yet she was still there. Rain struck the floor-to-ceiling windows surrounding the executive lounge, turning the city lights beyond the glass into blurred streams of gold and white. Aurora stood near the window with a tablet in her hand, pretending to review information she had already finished reading. The sound of the door opening behind her made her pulse react before her thoughts did and she hated that. ⸻ Cassian entered without urgency, his jacket had already been removed and the sleeves of his shirt were folded neatly, exposing strong forearms that immediately became impossible to ignore once she noticed them. Aurora looked back toward the city , a mistake because awareness only became worse when she stopped looking directly at him. You are still here.” Cassian’s voice was calm, controlled, and frustratingly normal. Aurora turned slightly toward him. “So are you.” The silence that followed should have felt awkward, yet neither of them seemed interested in leaving. Months of unresolved tension suddenly felt impossible to ignore. The protection, the control, the jealousy, and the constant awareness they carried of each other seemed to fill the room alongside them. When Aurora finally faced him fully, she realized he was standing closer than she expected. Not close enough to touch, but close enough to matter. You keep making decisions for me,” she said eventually, breaking the quiet. Cassian looked up from the document in front of him and met her gaze. “You keep acting as though you don't already know why.” The answer irritated her because it landed too close to the truth. “Knowing your reasons doesn't mean I approve of them.” A faint smile touched his expression, disappearing almost as quickly as it appeared. “No. But you stop fighting them sooner than you used to.” Aurora should have looked away. Instead, she held his gaze. Neither of them were stepping back now. For the first time, there was no boardroom table between them. No executives. No reports. No convenient distraction strong enough to redirect attention elsewhere. Just the two of them. Aurora became painfully aware of his proximity, the warmth radiating from him, and the unwavering attention focused entirely on her. For the first time, the perfect control he carried so effortlessly seemed less absolute. Small cracks had begun to appear. And somehow, that was more dangerous than if he had lost control completely. Cassian's voice was low, rough, and laced with yearning as he finally broke the silence. "Aurora..." he rasped, his eyes dark and intense. There was a hunger in his tone, as if he'd been holding back for weeks, craving this moment. His gaze dropped briefly to her lips before returning to her eyes then he closed the distance in one swift, purposeful move. His lips captured hers in a fierce, desperate kiss-demanding, full of unspoken need. His hands found her hips, pulling her closer as if to erase the distance that had build between them in just a month. The taste of her was intoxicating, and his body pressed into hers, craving more, as if he'd been controlling this desire for far too long. When they finally parted Aurora’s pulse refused to settle. Cassian’s expression remained composed, but the control he wore so effortlessly had finally cracked enough for her to see what existed underneath it. No apology followed the kiss, and neither attempted to dismiss it as a mistake. The truth was far more complicated than either of them wanted to admit. Months of restraint, tension, and impossible awareness had finally reached a breaking point, leaving both of them standing in front of a reality they had spent far too long avoiding.
