Chapter 28 — Emotional Friction

The tension between Aurora Devereux and Cassian Vale no longer remained confined to external interactions. It began to surface in moments where silence lasted longer than necessary, and where words carried more weight than their surface meaning suggested.

Their communication remained professional in structure, but increasingly unstable in tone. Even when discussing routine matters, there were pauses that suggested something unsaid sitting just beneath the surface of every exchange.

Aurora had begun to notice that arguments no longer formed in the usual way between them. Instead, conversations broke down into pauses, unfinished thoughts, and moments where neither of them fully committed to ending what had started.

Cassian remained composed throughout, yet his presence carried a controlled intensity that made distance feel less like separation and more like restraint.

During one such interaction, a discussion that was meant to be brief extended far beyond its expected duration. Neither of them redirected it immediately. The conversation drifted between professional clarity and personal undertones without either side formally acknowledging the transition.

At certain points, speech paused entirely, not due to interruption, but because continuing required a level of honesty neither of them was prepared to express.

Aurora maintained control outwardly, but internally, she registered the shift in dynamics more clearly with each exchange. Cassian’s responses were measured, yet they carried an awareness of her reactions that influenced the rhythm of the conversation itself.

There was no visible escalation, yet everything between them felt increasingly charged.

At one moment, their attention locked for longer than necessary. Neither spoke immediately afterward. The silence did not feel empty; it felt structured, as though it had replaced words entirely.

Aurora broke eye contact first, but the effect of that brief connection remained.

Cassian did not follow the moment with explanation or retreat. He simply continued as though nothing had shifted, though his presence remained subtly altered afterward.

When the conversation eventually ended, there was no clear resolution. It stopped because continuation was no longer sustainable, not because it had reached completion.

Aurora left first.

Cassian remained for a short while longer.

Neither of them addressed what had nearly surfaced between them.
