Chapter Seven

1261 Words
Feeling a little giddy at my small victory in the alpha staring contest, there’s a slight bounce in my step as I follow his grumpiness through the Shadow Pack territory. The air is thick with the earthy scent of damp soil and the crisp, refreshing aroma of growing crops. As we approach the entrance, two massive military-grade tents loom ahead, their canvas taut against the cool breeze. The tents stand like sentinels, filled with supplies vital for life beyond these borders—clothing, rations for travel, health kits—all neatly organized, ready for any venture that might require bravery. The landscape transforms dramatically as we move deeper into the territory. Acres of farmland stretch endlessly, a patchwork quilt of vibrant greens and browns rolling out under a bright blue sky. The fields ripple like waves in the wind, their golden wheat swaying gently, while emerald crops stand proud and tall, basking in the warm sun. Workers are scattered throughout the landscape, their figures moving rhythmically as they tend to their daily tasks. I can hear the steady sounds of plows breaking the soil, the rustle of leaves as they gather ripe produce, and the occasional bleat of sheep or moo of cattle echoing in the distance. Curious herding dogs dart between the livestock, their tails wagging energetically as they expertly guide the animals along the well-worn paths. This method of herding intrigues me; back in my old territory, we relied on our predator auras to keep the farm animals in line. Here, the dogs are loyal companions, nipping playfully at the heels of the sheep, coaxing them with barks and nudges. As we weave through the agricultural lands, the animals seem unbothered by my presence. They lift their heads, nostrils flaring as they catch my scent. Even a brave, fluffy white rabbit ventures close, hopping up to my legs and pausing to sniff curiously. Its soft fur brushes against my jeans, and I can’t help but smile at the unexpected moment of connection amidst the bustling farm life. The warmth of the sun on my skin and the lively sounds of the territory wrap around me like a comforting embrace, grounding me in this vibrant world. Stunned at the brave, small creature, I bent down slowly and offered my hand. Its little nose moved back and forth at lightning speed. I didn't dare make a move. The bunny finally took the risk and pushed its white fluffy head against my outstretched hand. Inside I was jumping for joy. Nothing this cute has ever approached me before. Due to how my old pack would treat beings they found less than them, small animals rarely came into the territory. Footsteps approaching interrupted my elatedness as the bunny chose the newcomer over me. I looked over and pouted when I saw the rabbit hop into the big alpha's palm. Seeing the large, intimidating alpha stroking the small fluffy ball did something weird to my chest. I rubbed the area, hoping the feeling would disappear. "Looks like a win this round," he smirks, slowly placing the bunny down and turning to continue our trek. Well, damn. Looks like we're tied. I obediently follow Damien, happily taking in my surroundings along the way. When the grumpy alpha stops suddenly at the top of a hill, I look over at him confused. But he isn’t looking at me. Curious, I turn to what caused him to stop, and my breath comes out in a surprised whoosh. From this view, The Shadow pack territory sprawled as far as the eye could see below, a vibrant metropolis harmoniously intertwined with nature. Towering skyscrapers, their glass facades shimmering in the sunlight, stood alongside ancient trees that had been preserved and incorporated into the urban fabric. Each building was designed to blend seamlessly with the landscape, featuring green roofs and vertical gardens that cascaded with foliage, creating a living tapestry of plant life against the steel and concrete. Wide boulevards lined with flowering trees and native plants wound through the city, their vibrant colors attracting butterflies and birds, fluttering above the buildings just as they would the forest trees. Pedestrian-friendly walkways meandered alongside clear streams, where wolves in human form strolled, enjoying the sounds of water bubbling over rocks. The air was crisp and fresh, filled with the scents of blooming flowers and earthy soil, a stark contrast to the small human town I had just left. At the heart of the metropolis lay a sprawling Central Park, an expansive oasis where the pack could escape the bustle of city life. This green sanctuary housed towering trees that had stood for centuries, their branches forming a natural cathedral overhead. Winding paths led through fields of wildflowers, and tranquil ponds reflected the sky, creating perfect spots for meditation and connection with nature. Here, wolves could shed their human forms, letting the thrill of the chase take over as they reveled in the freedom of their true selves. The sounds of urban life blended with the calls of nature. Distant howls echoed through the streets at dusk, a reminder of the pack’s ancient traditions as the sun set behind the skyline, casting a warm glow over the city. Streetlights flickered on, and bioluminescent plants began to softly glow, man-made light and natural light coexisting to illuminate the pathways. The metropolis was alive with activity, but it was a city that prioritized sustainability and coexistence. Solar panels adorned rooftops, and wind turbines dotted the outskirts, harnessing energy to power the city. Community gardens flourished on every block, where residents cultivated organic produce and shared resources, reflecting the pack's communal spirit. Markets thrived, bustling with vendors selling locally sourced goods, handmade crafts, and seasonal fruits, creating a vibrant atmosphere reminiscent of traditional pack gatherings. Innovative architecture seamlessly integrated with nature, showcasing structures built from natural materials that provided shelter while allowing for airflow and sunlight. High-tech communication systems connected the community, ensuring every member was informed and engaged, while meetings took place in eco-friendly buildings designed with open spaces and natural light, fostering collaboration and creativity. I have never seen anything like it. How big is this place? When I feel eyes on me, I turn to find Damien staring at me. A light blush spread across my cheeks at him seeing just how in awe I was of his territory. I cleared my throat. “I see why you stopped here. This place is truly breathtaking,” I say, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. A genuine smile stretches along his face and my heart skips a beat. His smile transforms his face. A beautiful god replaced the gruff, angry alpha. The hard lines on his face soften and the steel gray of his eyes light up like the sun touching a rain cloud. The overall effect does terrible things to my poor recovering heart. I look away quickly before he makes my heart stop beating altogether with his deadly good looks or drool starts running down my face. When he says nothing, I glance over at him again. The notorious shadow pack alpha mask is back in place having me wonder if I imagined that breathtaking smile completely. “Keep moving, Red, I have more important things to do than be your tour guide,” he snaps. Damien starts down the hill not waiting for me. He moves at a much faster pace than earlier and I nearly have to sprint to keep up. He doesn’t look back to see if I’m keeping up. What in the goddess just happened?
