Chapter 7: The War Begins

1945 Words
Chaos exploded across the clearing. The first wolf hit the ground before anyone could react. A second arrow flew from the darkness. Then a third. The projectiles moved with unnatural speed. One buried itself in a tree trunk. Another narrowly missed Lyra's head. The blonde wolf shifted instantly. Bones cracked. Fur erupted from her skin. Within seconds, a massive gray wolf stood where she had been. Growling. Ready to kill. "Protect her!" Timothy roared. His command echoed through the clearing. Every wolf immediately moved. Several shifted into their wolf forms. Others positioned themselves around Tiana and Rachel. The Shadow born attacked. Dozens burst from the forest. Their red eyes glowed in the darkness. Their claws gleamed beneath the moonlight. They moved like predators finally unleashed. Tiana's blood turned to ice. This wasn't a fight. This was a m******e waiting to happen. The Shadow born leader smiled. His expression filled with cruel anticipation. "Bring me the girl." The command sent chills through her body. Every creature immediately focused on her. Only her. Timothy's silver eyes flashed. A deep growl erupted from his chest. The sound vibrated through the entire clearing. Dangerous. Ancient. Terrifying. The Alpha shifted. His transformation happened faster than before. Dark fur exploded across his body. His muscles expanded. Bones cracked. Seconds later, the enormous black wolf stood between Tiana and the approaching enemies. The sight stole her breath. He looked unstoppable. Like a creature born for battle. The Shadow born charged. Timothy met them head-on. The collision shook the clearing. A Shadow born flew backward. Another slammed into a tree. A third never even reached him. The black wolf tore through the attackers like a storm. Every movement was precise. Brutal. Efficient. Tiana couldn't look away. Despite the danger surrounding her, she found herself watching Timothy. Watching the way he fought. The way he protected. The way every wolf instinctively followed his lead. He truly was their Alpha. Not because he demanded loyalty. Because he earned it. A scream echoed nearby. Tiana spun around. Rachel. One of the Shadow born had broken through the defensive line. The creature lunged. Rachel stumbled backward. Fear flashed across her face. Without thinking, Tiana moved. "Rachel!" The Shadow Born's claws slashed toward her aunt. Time seemed to slow. The creature smiled. Certain it would strike. Certain it would win. Then something happened. Something impossible. A burst of silver light exploded from Tiana's body. The entire clearing froze. The Shadow born was thrown backward. Violently. Its body crashed through several trees before disappearing into the darkness. Silence followed. Complete silence. Even the battle stopped. Every wolf stared. Every Shadow born stared. Tiana stared. The silver glow surrounded her for several seconds. Warm. Powerful. Beautiful. Then it vanished. Leaving everyone speechless. The Shadow born leader's smile disappeared instantly. Fear replaced it. Genuine fear. "No." The word escaped his lips. Tiana looked down at her hands. Nothing seemed different. Yet something had happened. Something impossible. The bond in her chest pulsed wildly. Timothy shifted back into human form. Shock filled his silver eyes. "Tiana." Her name sounded almost reverent. The wolves began whispering. Confused. Amazed. Afraid. Rachel looked like she might cry. The Shadow born leader took a step backward. Then another. His confidence had completely vanished. "Impossible." Timothy moved closer to Tiana. Protectively. Possessively. The reaction didn't escape Lyra's notice. The blonde wolf's expression darkened immediately. The jealousy returned. Strong as ever. Yet even she looked shaken by what she had witnessed. "What was that?" Tiana whispered. Nobody answered. The silence frightened her. Because she was beginning to understand something. Everyone knew what had happened. Everyone except her. Again. The Shadow born leader suddenly snarled. The sound echoed across the clearing. "We should have killed her years ago." Timothy's eyes turned murderous. "You'll never touch her." The certainty in his voice sent a strange warmth through Tiana's chest. The bond responded immediately. The feeling intensified. Growing stronger with every passing minute. The Shadow born leader noticed. His expression became grim. "The bond is accelerating." Timothy's jaw tightened. The creature looked directly at Tiana. "You have no idea what you're becoming." Fear slithered through her stomach. "What does that mean?" The Shadow born laughed bitterly. "They still haven't told you." The creature's gaze shifted toward Timothy. "You should have." Then, before anyone could react, he raised his hand. The remaining Shadow born immediately retreated. Fading back into the forest. One by one. The battle ended almost as suddenly as it had begun. Silence settled over the clearing once more. Only this time, the silence felt different. Heavier. More dangerous. Because everyone had seen the silver light. Everyone had witnessed Tiana's power. And judging by the fear in the Shadow born leader's eyes... whatever had awakened inside her was something the monsters had feared for centuries. Timothy looked at her. Concern. Relief. Wonder. All mixed together. Then he spoke the words that made Tiana's stomach drop. "We need to get you to the pack house." "Why?" Timothy's expression darkened. "Because if the Shadow born know what you are..." He paused. Looking toward the forest. Toward the enemies that had just fled. Then back at her. "They'll come back with an army." Tiana stared at him. An army. The word alone was enough to make her stomach twist. Only yesterday she had been worried about birthday decorations and college applications. Now monsters were hunting her. Werewolves were protecting her. And apparently she possessed some kind of power she didn't understand. The situation felt unreal. Like a nightmare she couldn't wake up from. "What am I?" The question escaped before she could stop it. Silence followed. Timothy looked away. Rachel lowered her head. Even Lyra refused to meet her eyes. The reaction frustrated her immediately. "There it is again." Timothy frowned. "What?" "That look." Tiana threw her hands into the air. "Everybody keeps acting like they know some huge secret." The bond pulsed angrily inside her chest. Almost reacting to her emotions. "And every time I ask about it, everyone suddenly becomes quiet." Nobody argued. Because nobody could. Tiana laughed bitterly. "I am literally the center of this mess and somehow I'm the last person to know anything." Rachel winced. The guilt on her face was obvious. Timothy stepped closer. Close enough that she could see the concern in his silver eyes. "We're trying to protect you." The words immediately irritated her. "Stop saying that." His eyebrows rose slightly. "I'm serious." Tiana folded her arms. "Protection shouldn't mean lying." The statement struck home. She could tell by the expressions around her. Because nobody had a response. Timothy studied her for several moments. Then he nodded slowly. "You're right." The admission surprised everyone. Especially Lyra. The blonde woman looked genuinely shocked. As if Timothy rarely admitted when he was wrong. The Alpha exhaled heavily. "The moment we reach the pack house, I'll tell you everything." Tiana narrowed her eyes. "Everything?" "Everything." The promise hung between them. For the first time since meeting him, she believed him. The sincerity in his voice was impossible to fake. A strange warmth spread through her chest. The bond again. Timothy felt it too. His expression softened. For one brief moment, the chaos around them disappeared. Then a distant howl echoed from somewhere beyond the mountains. Every wolf immediately became alert. Timothy's face darkened. "What now?" Tiana asked. The Alpha listened carefully. His silver eyes narrowed. When he finally looked at her again, concern had returned. "That wasn't one of ours." The statement sent a chill through the clearing. Because if it wasn't one of Timothy's wolves... it meant something else was coming. The clearing fell silent. No one moved. No one spoke. Even the wind seemed to disappear. Tiana looked around at the tense faces surrounding her. Every wolf appeared alert. Ready. Waiting. The distant howl echoed again. Longer this time. Darker. The sound seemed to roll across the mountains and through the forest itself. A chill ran down her spine. Timothy's expression hardened. Rachel looked terrified. Even Lyra appeared uneasy. That worried Tiana more than anything. The blonde wolf never seemed afraid of anything. Yet now she looked genuinely concerned. "What was that?" Tiana asked. Timothy didn't answer immediately. His eyes remained fixed on the darkness. Listening. Calculating. Finally he spoke. "An Alpha." The words settled heavily in the air. Tiana frowned. "Another Alpha?" Timothy nodded. "There are several packs." The revelation surprised her. Of course there were other packs. It made sense. Yet somehow she had never considered it. The world she thought she knew had been small. Simple. Now it seemed endless. Complicated. Dangerous. Lyra stepped forward. "It can't be him." Timothy's jaw tightened. The reaction immediately caught Tiana's attention. "Him who?" Neither answered. Tiana groaned. "Seriously?" The frustration in her voice was impossible to hide. Rachel almost smiled. Almost. "We'll explain." "When?" No response. Tiana sighed dramatically. Several wolves actually laughed. The brief moment of humor eased some of the tension. Only slightly. The distant howl came again. Closer. Timothy immediately became serious. "We need to move." This time nobody argued. Not even Tiana. Whatever was coming clearly worried everyone. The pack began gathering supplies. Several wolves shifted into human form. Others remained in their wolf forms. The entire process happened with practiced efficiency. As though they had done this many times before. That realization was unsettling. How many battles had they fought? How many enemies existed? How many secrets was this world hiding? Timothy approached her. His silver eyes softened. "We'll travel through the northern ridge." Tiana blinked. "We?" The single word slipped out before she could stop it. A faint smile appeared on his face. "Yes." Something warm fluttered inside her chest. The bond. Again. Every interaction with him seemed to strengthen it. The realization both fascinated and terrified her. Because she was beginning to enjoy his presence. Beginning to trust him. Beginning to rely on him. And she barely knew him. Lyra noticed the exchange immediately. The blonde woman's expression darkened. Pain flickered through her eyes. Tiana looked away. The guilt returned. She hadn't asked for Timothy. Hadn't asked for this bond. Yet none of that changed Lyra's suffering. Timothy extended his hand. The simple gesture made her pulse quicken. For several seconds she stared at it. Then she placed her hand in his. Instantly the bond reacted. Warmth surged through both of them. Timothy froze. His silver eyes widened slightly. The connection felt stronger than before. Much stronger. As though something was accelerating. Growing. Awakening. Neither spoke. Neither looked away. For a brief moment, the rest of the world disappeared. Only the two of them remained. Then Lyra cleared her throat loudly. The moment shattered instantly. Tiana pulled her hand back. Embarrassed. Timothy looked mildly annoyed. The reaction almost made her laugh. Almost. A sudden movement at the edge of the forest caught everyone's attention. A wolf emerged from the darkness. Large. White. Powerful. The newcomer moved confidently into the clearing. Several members of Timothy's pack immediately became tense. The white wolf stopped. Its golden eyes locked onto Tiana. Recognition flashed within them. Then the wolf shifted. A tall man appeared where the animal had stood. His dark blond hair fell to his shoulders. A scar crossed one side of his face. His golden eyes never left Tiana. The stranger smiled. "Well." His voice was smooth. Dangerously smooth. "It seems I've finally found you." Timothy immediately stepped in front of her. The protective gesture happened without thought. Without hesitation. The newcomer noticed. And smiled wider. Something about that smile made Tiana uneasy. Very uneasy. Because it looked like he knew exactly who she was. And exactly what she had become.
