Chapter 2: The Shifting Lines Hannah POV The sun was already high in the sky when I stepped out of my dorm, the late morning warmth wrapping around me like a familiar embrace. I tightened my grip on my bag, my mind still buzzing with thoughts from yesterday. Our first day had gone smoothly—aside from the usual playful bickering between Aiden and Jayden—but something about it felt different. There was an unspoken tension in the air, subtle yet impossible to ignore. As I walked across campus, my phone vibrated in my pocket. Pulling it out, I saw Jayden’s name flashing on the screen. Jayden: Where are you, sweetheart? I rolled my eyes at the nickname but couldn’t help the small smile that formed on my lips. Me: On my way to the library. Why? His reply came almost immediately. Jayden: Change of plans. Meet me at the café near the science building. I’m buying you coffee. I raised an eyebrow. That was unexpected. Jayden was generous, sure, but randomly treating me to coffee on a busy morning? Something was up. Me: Why do I feel like you’re up to something? Jayden: Because I always am. Just get here. Shaking my head, I pocketed my phone and turned toward the café. The small shop was already packed with students, the air filled with the rich aroma of coffee and freshly baked pastries. As soon as I stepped inside, I spotted Jayden lounging at a corner booth, two cups of coffee already placed in front of him. He waved me over with that signature smirk of his. “Look who finally decided to show up,” he teased. I slid into the seat across from him. “You literally just texted me ten minutes ago.” “Exactly. And I had to wait ten whole minutes.” He leaned back, taking a slow sip from his cup. “Anyway, I wanted to talk to you before Aiden got the chance.” I frowned. “About what?” Jayden’s smirk faltered slightly, his usual playful demeanor replaced by something more serious. “Just… us. Our friendship.” I blinked at him, confused. “Jayden, we’ve been friends since we were kids. What’s there to talk about?” He exhaled slowly, tapping his fingers against the table. “I don’t know. Things feel different now.” Before I could press him further, a voice interrupted us. “Am I interrupting something?” I turned to see Aiden standing beside our table, his sharp gaze flickering between Jayden and me. Unlike Jayden’s easygoing stance, Aiden’s posture was rigid, his expression unreadable. Jayden sighed dramatically. “And here comes the fun police.” Aiden ignored him and looked at me. “You didn’t answer my text.” I frowned and quickly pulled out my phone. Sure enough, there was a message from Aiden that I hadn’t seen. Aiden: Meet me at the library when you’re free. “Oh, sorry, I didn’t see this,” I said, feeling guilty. Jayden chuckled. “Too late, brother. She’s with me now.” Aiden’s jaw tensed. “Hannah can decide that for herself.” The tension between them was suddenly palpable. I looked between them, my chest tightening. “Guys, what is going on with you two?” Jayden was the first to recover. He flashed me an easy grin. “Nothing, sweetheart. Just the usual sibling rivalry.” Aiden didn’t look convinced, and frankly, neither was I. Something was changing between us, and for the first time, I wasn’t sure if I liked where this was going. The days passed in a blur of lectures, assignments, and group discussions. College was nothing like high school—everything felt more intense, more serious. But despite the academic pressure, one thing remained the same: Aiden and Jayden’s never-ending rivalry. I started noticing the subtle changes between them. At first, it was small things—who would walk me to class, who would carry my books, who would sit next to me in the library. It felt almost ridiculous, like an unspoken game between them. But soon, it became more obvious. Like today. I was sitting under a tree in the campus courtyard, reviewing notes for an upcoming quiz. The weather was nice, the shade cool against my skin, and for a moment, I was at peace. Until Jayden dropped onto the grass beside me with his usual lazy grin. “Taking a break from the world, sweetheart?” he teased, leaning back on his arms. I rolled my eyes, flipping another page. “No, I’m trying to study.” Jayden groaned dramatically. “And here I thought you’d be up for some fun.” I gave him a sideways glance. “Define fun.” Jayden smirked. “Ice cream. My treat.” The temptation was real. Ice cream did sound good, and Jayden always had a way of making things feel lighter, easier. Before I could respond, another voice cut in. “She’s studying, Jayden. Don’t distract her.” I looked up to see Aiden standing there, arms crossed, his expression unreadable. Jayden snorted. “Relax, Mr. Perfectionist. It’s just ice cream.” Aiden’s gaze flickered to me. “Do you want to go?” I hesitated. The way he asked, his tone softer than usual, made me feel strangely caught between them. Jayden raised an eyebrow. “Come on, Hannah. I know you want to.” Aiden remained silent, his jaw tightening. For some reason, that silence made my heart race more than Jayden’s teasing. I forced a laugh. “I’ll take a rain check, Jayden. I really do need to study.” Jayden pouted but didn’t push further. “Fine. But you owe me ice cream later.” He stood up, dusting off his jeans. “See you around, sweetheart.” Then he strolled off like he hadn’t just made the air around us ten times heavier. I exhaled, shaking my head. “Why does he always have to be so dramatic?” Aiden sat down beside me, much more composed. “That’s just how he is.” I glanced at him. “You two have been acting weird lately.” Aiden’s fingers tapped lightly against his knee. “Weird how?” I shrugged. “I don’t know… just different.” He didn’t reply right away. Instead, he picked up a fallen leaf and twirled it between his fingers. When he finally spoke, his voice was lower. “You’ve always been in the middle of us, Hannah. Maybe you’re just starting to notice it more.” Something about his words sent a shiver down my spine. Because deep down, I knew he was right. And I had no idea what to do about it.
