Ava Morgan's POV
The drive to my apartment felt endless.
No one spoke.
Damian sat beside me in the back of the car, his expression unreadable.
Victor and Lucas followed in another vehicle.
The tension was suffocating.
My hands clenched in my lap.
Someone had broken into my home.
The thought refused to leave my mind.
"What if they're still there?" I asked quietly.
Damian's gaze shifted to me.
"Then they'll regret it."
A chill ran through me.
He didn't sound worried.
He sounded dangerous.
Very dangerous.
The car finally stopped outside my apartment building.
Before I could reach for the door, Damian spoke.
"Stay close to me."
I nodded.
For once, I had no intention of arguing.
The building lobby was empty.
We quickly headed upstairs.
The closer we got to my apartment, the faster my heart beat.
Then I saw it.
The door.
Broken.
The lock hung uselessly from the frame.
Fear tightened my chest.
Someone had definitely been inside.
Damian stepped in front of me.
His wolf was close to the surface.
I could feel it.
Power rolled off him in waves.
Slowly, he pushed open the door.
The apartment was a disaster.
Drawers had been emptied.
Books were scattered across the floor.
My couch had been overturned.
Clothes were everywhere.
It looked like a tornado had passed through.
"Oh my God."
My voice cracked.
I stepped inside.
The sight hurt more than I expected.
This little apartment had been my fresh start.
Now it looked violated.
Destroyed.
Damian's eyes scanned every corner.
Looking.
Searching.
Hunting.
Victor entered moments later.
"They were definitely searching for something."
Lucas picked up a torn notebook from the floor.
"They weren't interested in money."
That much was obvious.
My laptop sat untouched.
The small amount of cash I kept hidden was still there.
Whoever had done this wanted something specific.
My hand moved to my necklace.
Again.
And again Damian noticed.
Then his eyes narrowed.
"Ava."
I froze.
"What?"
"Was there anything else your mother gave you?"
The question caught me off guard.
"No."
"Think carefully."
I frowned.
Then something clicked.
A memory.
The night I left home.
My mother standing beside my suitcase.
"Keep it close. One day you'll understand."
Wait.
My eyes widened.
"There was a letter."
Everyone froze.
"A letter?" Victor asked.
I nodded.
"My mother slipped something into my suitcase before I left."
My pulse quickened.
"I completely forgot about it."
The suitcase.
I rushed toward my bedroom.
Or what remained of it.
The mattress had been slashed open.
My dresser drawers were empty.
But my old suitcase still sat beneath the bed.
Untouched.
I pulled it out.
My hands trembled.
Please be there.
Please.
I unzipped the suitcase.
Then searched frantically.
Clothes.
Books.
Papers.
And finally—
A sealed envelope.
My breath caught.
The handwriting on the front was unmistakable.
For Ava. Open only when the truth begins to reveal itself.
The room went silent.
Even Damian looked surprised.
Slowly, I broke the seal.
Inside was a folded letter.
My mother's letter.
The first line made my blood run cold.
"My dearest Ava, if you are reading this, then they have found you."
I stared at the words.
Unable to breathe.
Unable to think.
Because suddenly, everything felt real.
The rogues.
The necklace.
The Moon Heir.
My mother had known.
She had known all along.
