The ring on my finger felt foreign.
I turned my hand slightly, watching the platinum band catch the dim office light.
It was simple, elegant, and undoubtedly expensive.
A perfect match for the man who had just placed it there.
Nathaniel Whitmore.
My husband.
I barely knew him.
And yet, here I was, legally bound to him for the next two years.
I dropped my hand to my lap, suppressing the urge to remove the ring altogether.
Across the table, Nathaniel observed me with his usual unreadable expression, his fingers drumming lightly against the surface.
"It suits you," he remarked casually.
I forced out a breathless laugh. "It suits the role I have to play."
His lips pressed into a thin line, but he didn't argue.
Instead, he reached into his suit pocket and pulled out a sleek black keycard, sliding it across the table toward me.
"This is for your floor," he said. "Third level. Everything you need is already arranged. If you require anything else, let the staff know."
I eyed the card but didn't take it immediately. "And you?"
His head tilted slightly, as if surprised by the question. "I'll be on the second floor."
"Right. Separate rooms."
"That was the agreement, wasn't it?" His voice was impossibly smooth, like he had never once doubted I would abide by the rules.
I picked up the keycard, the weight of it pressing into my palm. This wasn't my home. This wasn't a marriage. It was a carefully constructed illusion.
Nathaniel stood, adjusting his cufflinks with effortless precision. "I'll have the car take you home. I have a meeting to attend."
Of course he did.
I expected him to walk out without another word, but he hesitated. Just for a moment.
"You don't have to wear it if you don't want to," he said, nodding toward the ring.
I looked down at my hand again. "It's part of the contract, isn't it?"
His gaze lingered on me, something unspoken flashing behind his eyes. But he didn't say whatever it was he was thinking.
Instead, he turned and left, his steps steady, controlled, like a man who never second-guessed his own decisions.
