For four days after that, Valerie didn’t meet Josh at all. When she woke up, he had been gone. Then when it was dawn, Josh came home. But every day, Josh left Valerie a note, sometimes a stem of red roses, a box of chocolate, or a hairpin. Finally, on the fifth day, Valerie waited on the living room couch. She wanted to see Josh when he came home, but after waiting for hours, she got asleep.
