Valerie only took a spoonful of the chocolate pudding. Her appetite was gone because of their conversation. Yet, when she thought about why Joshua hadn’t picked her up yet, somehow, she gasped.
“Do you finally realize that your husband won’t come?”
Valerie said nothing. Since the conversation before, she kept her mind to herself. “No, but I’m tired. Can I skip the next two desserts?”
“Sure.”
Valerie stood, then nodded at Albert. “Thank you. Please excuse me. I don’t feel well.”
Albert stood too and bent his head. “I will check on you in a couple of minutes.”
“No! I mean, no need. I need to have a rest.”
