Chapter Nineteen

The following afternoon Cassie and her sister were in the odd position of knocking on a gentleman’s door. Cynthia kept looking around uncomfortably as they waited. Ladies did not call upon gentlemen, it simply wasn’t done! But there they were, and it was unsurprisingly awkward.
They were shown into a very fashionably decorated drawing room. Cassie was pleasantly surprised, and by Cynthia’s expression, she was as well. She supposed they’d both been expecting something much more masculine or sparse. Even more surprising was the lady who stood to greet them along with Mr. Crome.
He strode forward, stopping only a few feet short of where they stood to bow. “Lady Sorrell, Miss Benton, thank you so very much for coming.”
