My heart raced as I stood there.
The man watched me with a smirk that sent a chill down my spine.
His presence was overwhelming, a force that sucked the air out of the space. Tall, broad-shouldered, and impeccably dressed in a tailored black suit that clung to his muscular frame, he exuded power and danger in equal measure.
But it wasn’t just his appearance that caught me off guard—it was his eyes. Dark, piercing, and cold as ice. They seemed to look right through me, as if he could see into the deepest, most hidden parts of my soul. Those eyes were like a predator’s, always calculating, always watching, waiting for the right moment to strike. His jawline was sharp, his features chiseled and cruel, and there was an arrogance in the way he carried himself, as though he was untouchable, unbreakable.
“Aren't you cheated on by a smelly bastard? Don’t you want your revenge?” His voice was smooth but taunting.
My eyes widened in shock. How does he know about that?
“Surprised?” Asher chuckled darkly, leaning back in his chair, crossing his legs like he had all the time in the world. “You don’t need to be. I know everything about you. Your family. Your past. Every little thing.”
How the hell did I get myself with this man? What was I thinking that night?
I could feel my pulse quickening, panic threatening to take over. I swallowed hard, trying to keep my voice steady. “How do…you know all this?”
“Vivian,” he said, shaking his head slightly, “I’m a man who makes it his business to know. Everything.” He raised an eyebrow. “
Every instinct screamed at me to run, but my feet wouldn’t move. I was frozen under his gaze, my body refusing to obey. Before I could process what was happening, the door behind me creaked open. I turned slightly, and two of his men entered, dragging a bruised and bloodied man between them.
My breath caught. He was barely standing, his legs weak, his clothes torn. They threw him in front of Asher’s desk like he was nothing.
“Is this the one?” Asher asked, his voice bored, as though this was just another part of his day.
One of the thugs nodded. “Yes, boss. This is the one who stole the documents.”
I couldn’t help but look at the man on the floor, trembling, blood dripping from his mouth as he struggled to speak. “P-please, I didn’t mean to…I was desperate…”
Asher didn’t even glance down at him. His eyes stayed fixed on me, cold and fierce. “Desperation,” he murmured. “It makes people do stupid things, doesn’t it?” He stood slowly.
The man on the floor whimpered, crawling a few inches forward, still begging. “I swear, I didn’t want to betray you. I just needed money. Please, I—”
“Needed money? And you thought stealing from me was the answer?”
I could barely breathe as he reached into his jacket. I knew what was coming, but I couldn’t move. I was rooted to the spot, my legs trembling, as he pulled out a sleek, black gun. He turned the gun over in his hand, admiring it for a moment before he aimed it at the man on the floor.
“Watch carefully, Vivian,” he said, his voice low and chilling. “This is what happens when people cross me.”
Every time he took my name I felt a cold shiver run down my spine.
The man on the floor sobbed, eyes wide with terror. “Please! No—”
The gunshot exploded in the room, deafening, and the man collapsed in front of me, lifeless. Blood sprayed across the floor, the red pooling beneath him, dark and sticky. Some of it splattered near my feet, creeping closer like a shadow.
My legs buckled, but I didn’t fall. I was paralyzed, my mind racing, my heart pounding so hard it hurt. The metallic smell of blood filled the room, sharp and overwhelming. Everything else faded away as I stared at the scene in front of me.
Asher lowered the gun, turning to me. His expression was unreadable, but there was a cruel glint in his eyes.
I trembled, fear crashing over me like a wave. I couldn’t speak, couldn’t move. My gaze was locked on the blood creeping toward my shoes, the red staining the tips of my heels.
Asher tilted his head, studying me like I was some trapped animal. “I suggest you remember this moment,” he said softly, leaning in close, his breath warm against my ear. “Because the next time you even think about betraying me, it’ll be your blood on the floor.”
My heart was pounding so hard I thought it might burst from my chest. I could barely breathe as Asher closed the distance between us, his eyes never leaving mine. Every step he took toward me felt like the walls were closing in, trapping me in this nightmare.
My feet were glued to the floor, my body trembling with fear. I could still hear the echo of the gunshot in the back of my mind. But none of that compared to the terror I felt as Asher stood in front of me, so close I could feel the heat radiating from his body.
And then, he raised the gun. The cold, hard barrel brushed under my chin, tilting my head up until I was forced to meet his eyes. His gaze was dark, predatory, like he was toying with me, enjoying my fear.
“I—” I barely managed to whisper, my voice shaky and weak. But before I could say more, his other hand came to rest on my belly, his touch possessive. My entire body flinched at the contact, but I couldn’t move, couldn’t pull away. I was trapped.
“This child,” he said, his voice sending a chill down my spine. “It’s mine.”
I felt like the ground had dropped out from beneath me. My mind was spinning, scrambling to make sense of what he was saying, but it was like everything had come to a screeching halt.
“I’ll give you one choice,” he continued, pressing his hand a little harder against my stomach. His words sent a wave of dread washing over me. “You stay with me. Until my heir is born.”
Heir. The word felt like a punch to the gut. It wasn’t about me. But this child.
“We marry,” he said, his tone cold and final. “A contract marriage. Nothing more.”
I wanted to scream, to shout at him, to tell him he had no right. My mouth opened, the protest barely forming in my throat, but before I could make a sound, he lifted the gun and pressed it against my lips.
The cold metal froze me in place. It was rough against my skin, hard and unforgiving, a cruel reminder of the kind of man Asher was. My breath hitched in my throat, fear gripping me so tightly I thought I might collapse.
“And in return,” he whispered, his breath hot against my ear as he leaned in closer, “you can have anything you want. Money. Power. Security.”
I could barely think, my mind a blur of terror and disbelief. Anything I want? What could I possibly want from this man? Nothing—nothing except…
“Except…” His voice was low, his smirk wicked as he pressed the gun harder against my lips. “…freedom.”
The word slammed into me like a tidal wave. My entire body went cold. I felt the blood drain from my face, my heart racing so fast it felt like it might explode. I couldn’t even form a coherent thought. Freedom—the one thing I wanted more than anything else in the world, the one thing he knew I craved. And it was the one thing he wouldn’t give me.
I was trapped.
